Title: crassius47's motivation log
Description: guard and more guard

crassius47 - January 28, 2008 02:12 AM (GMT)
hi there to all who stumble accross my little log. having been a long time lurker i thought that this would be a good way to motivate myself to actually finish at least one aspect of my army and frankly forgeworld stuff is far to expensive and nice to be sitting on a shelf gathering dust. :)

all comments and especially criticism is well come so on with the pictures, first up my commisar vanquisher

quick question should i paint him black or keep the colours of the rest of the army and hope he stands out due to the other stuff stuck to the hull,

cheers crassius47

ps, if anybody can tell me how to put pictures and not links into post it will be much appriciated

charlie_c67 - January 28, 2008 02:17 AM (GMT)
Easy, post the image code not the link et voila instant pic.

The code's the one at the bottom.

Edit:Is he holding that banner up? Not sure that looks quite right TBH. But otherwise go for black. Make him stand out more.

crassius47 - January 28, 2008 02:26 AM (GMT)
cheers :) , we're a bit technophobic in east anglia

yep he's holding his banner up, liked the idea after seeing grizmund but think his arm might get a bit tired after while, have to build him a rest

jasevx - January 28, 2008 09:31 AM (GMT)
Good start to the Russ, I know what you mean about East Anglia, lived there 6 years, people used to look at my strange horseless carriage...

crassius47 - January 28, 2008 12:26 PM (GMT)
going to do a bit of work on the russ today before work, ie give it a quick coat of chaos blak to cover up the bits the basecoat missed, see if i can put a photo up tonight if i can figure out how the camara works.

ps i'm sure that where i live is twinned with Royston Vasey

crassius47 - January 30, 2008 03:58 PM (GMT)
quick update, based the beastie in chaos black then quick drybrush with codex grey. also picked out a few bits with scab red and gave the parchment a quick covering, any comments/ criticism

and hers one i made earlier, a random chimera

user posted image[/IMG]

jasevx - January 30, 2008 06:06 PM (GMT)
Chimera looks really good, great weathering. The scab red on the Vanq is very flat, quickest way of raising it is to highlight it with blood red.

KayvaanShrike - January 30, 2008 10:12 PM (GMT)
The Commissar tank looks really good, nice and striking. Will look good with a few highlights on it, but its looking promising. What colours are you going for on the banners?

crassius47 - January 30, 2008 11:12 PM (GMT)
the banners are going to be bleached bone with a brown wash of some discription and some 'motivational writing'. the cadian flag will be normal cadian colours but i've drunk to much coffee today to paint straight :)

ref jasevx: gave the red bits a quick wash with blood red which does make it better, cheers.

on a side note any opinions on dozer blades. should i add one of the normal ones, a forgeworld mine plow (random gamesday purchase with some other soon to be featured resin goodness) or leave it off?

cheers

bram kuijpers - January 31, 2008 07:58 AM (GMT)
damn this looks pretty damn good mate :)

maybe a beercan or coffee brand could be the 'motivational writing'

charlie_c67 - January 31, 2008 12:42 PM (GMT)
Or "Get it here" in large letters ;)
Any progress with said commisar? And what did you do about the banner toting arm in the end?

crassius47 - January 31, 2008 01:51 PM (GMT)
immmmm beer, prehaps i should cut off the comissars banner and swap it for a six pack, that should motivate the troops forward :P

said comissar is the same, just not attatched to his ride at the moment. the banner probily be staying took far to long to cut up and pin to pull apart.

right i'm off to take some mates hounds for a walk in some of the worst weather i've seen in ages

crassius47 - February 2, 2008 02:05 AM (GMT)
minor update due to work and chasing retrievers around town (twice). started work on some of the details on the tank such as the parchment and flag. i also gave the red bits another going over with blood red. just noticed that the cannon is a bit bent (please insert frankie howard comment), any ideas how i can fix that? just wondering if anybody has any ideas about how to make the flag a bit more realistic, it just seems a bit flat.

i also got bored waiting for the paint to dry so started on the drybrushing on the destroyer (it on its second paint job). well here are the pics

ps looking at my post times i'm not a vampire, just strange

Digits - February 3, 2008 08:09 PM (GMT)
Would really need a close up of the flag to be able to help more, but on face value, it could do with some white!

As for the canon, it is usual that you can bend the canon into shate after immersing it in hot water for a few minutes. However, being painted, I'm not too sure! Try disguising it maybe with a little camo netting? Try also just dry brushing a timy amount of blazing orange to the red areas on your tank too.

Keep it up mate!

Deserter - February 5, 2008 11:12 PM (GMT)
Some awesome stuff mate, I love the Chimera! Extra stowage is great, wheres it from? I really like the weathering too! Are you new to the hobby? Your stuff seems like you've been doing this a while, would you not prefer to be in Project Logs? I think logs tend to get more views there. The mods can probably move this over there if you liked :)

Digits - February 5, 2008 11:33 PM (GMT)
I agree. PM me if you want this moving into logs.

crassius47 - February 6, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)
cheers for the feedback, all much appreciated. distinct lack of updates due to work at the moment but day off today so should get something done if i can stay off the sauce long enough :P

got back into the hobby about 3 years ago after 10 years off due to beer, women and uni (in that order) but never did warhammer, usually just airfix (RIP) planes.

as for the stowage on the chimera its a mix of 2 kits, the allied vehicle accessory set from tamiya and academy US tank supply accessories both in 1/35 scale and both ebay specials. lots of nice bits to stick on guard treads and about the right scale

right, back to work

crassius47 - February 6, 2008 04:33 PM (GMT)
right first update in a full project log so here goes, spent the morning painting the cadian flag at the rear of the russ and touched up a few bits of the red with some orange. also started painting some cadians whilst waiting for the paint to dry.

piccies

just noticed on the close up that i have missed off a bit of white from the bottom left hand corner, once the coffee shakes have gone i'll touch that up

ps cheers for moving me :)

crassius47 - February 6, 2008 05:41 PM (GMT)
sorry to double post but i present the reason(s) why i need motivation and why i don't have a baneblade yet

user posted image[/IMG]

some are not even started, some started but not finished and others that are just plain rubbish. eventually i hopefully will get them all finished to a standard that i like and then move on to the troops, some time in the next 2 years :P

Digits - February 6, 2008 05:44 PM (GMT)
I don't see why it's going to take two years to turn that little lot around! Aim to do one a week, we'll help with the motivation!

Come on man, pull yourself together!!!!

crassius47 - February 6, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
one week!!!!!!!! in the previous 3 years all i've got are 1 chimera, 1 vanquisher and about 30 troops, and they have been repainted 3 times.
damn work, real life and carlsberg

dean - February 6, 2008 06:09 PM (GMT)
Okay... Two weeks then....

Do you have a dedicated workspace? (post pics up) Most of us do and it is a great motivator. I have a TV table in the living room that lets me watch TV and spend time with my family and even if I am not sitting down to seriously paint then I usually find myself fiddleing with something, cleaning mould lines, converting a bit or whatever...

My point.. If you set up a comfortable area where you spend a lot of time anyway then you are more likely to mess with painting than if you have an out of the way, dark, hole that you do all your painting in.

freebooter - February 6, 2008 11:13 PM (GMT)
And we also need a pic of your pet :)

And if not your pet some random stray you found on the street... Just make sure it's living. We've had enough of non living pets already :P

I really like your Commisar tank. The black looks good and the red is pretty clean. Flag's good too.

I actually reckon you should do the whole army in that scheme :P It looks reasonably easy to do seems as you're using a chaos black spray anyway as a base.
I just don't think the black and green work well together. But to each their own I guess.

crassius47 - February 7, 2008 12:44 AM (GMT)
my dedicated workspace consists of the living room in my flat but i mainly paint at the computer desk, its the right height and by the window to remove fumes and so i can see where the police cars are going. really need to tidy it up, bloody cadians seem to have annexed 1/3 of the room, sure they move in the night and take more floor space.

part of my problem is that i will sit and fiddle with models whilst doing other stuff but that seems to be the reason behind having lots of unfinished bits and pieces lying around.

as for pets i have none due to a lack of space and patience (living or dead).i have enough problems with my mates retrievers when i walk them but at least i can dump them on her and go home.

i think i will pass on the whole army being black, quite like painting dark angels green :P .and i've run out of base coat so off to halfords tomorrow for some matt black primer

closest things i have to pets pic

crassius47 - February 7, 2008 01:52 AM (GMT)
quick update before bed due to the fact my eyes hurt and my focal point is somewhere in the next room. started on the commissar and his banner which at the moment i am happy with. also started on the weathering of the tank body with a quick drybrush of boltgun metal and scorched brown (which really smells) and painted the tracks
user posted image[/IMG]

good night all and remember its not the monsters under the bed you need to worry about, it's the burglars in you wardrobe that are the problem :(

freebooter - February 7, 2008 05:52 AM (GMT)
Mmmmm...

Jack...

Not as good as Johny though :)

Can we get a pic of your mate's pups? There must be a pet pic...

And I'm loving that commisar tank.

crassius47 - February 7, 2008 11:58 PM (GMT)
not much done today due to painting the bathroom (you know you've been painting too much when you want to drybrush the walls to give some depth) and the arrival of the indiana jones boxset this afternoon.

i did sit down and watch one of the dvds's and fiddle with some spare bits to make an underslung grenade launcher for the vet squad. so far this evening i've stabbed myself twice and lost 2 bolters around the living room. picture is later.

ref freebooter jack beats johnnie every time and to keep you happy one pet pic, this is patch, my dads jack russel (its evil) :D

not much done in the last week due to work being busy and frankly being lazy, hence the motivation log. painted the tracks last night and did some more weathering on the hull. going to get some fine felt tip pens this afternoon to do the writie on the parchment and hopefully finish the commander this evening, then on to some stowage if it arrives this afternoon, cheers

bram kuijpers - February 13, 2008 02:04 PM (GMT)
looks pretty damn good especialy the flag

Death Korp - February 13, 2008 02:28 PM (GMT)
I can agree with Bram on the flag too, it loos really smashing :)

I can say that for the rest of your stuff too :)

DK

crassius47 - February 14, 2008 09:43 PM (GMT)
thanks for the comments guys, much appriciated, right small update time. my stowage has not arrived from ebay so not much done on the vanquisher in that department. i've tried to do the parchment scrolls with some felt tip pens but the idea was better than the outcome so tried painting on the writing by hand. think this came out ok but any ideas how to make it better would be nice

i think bar transfers and some small touch ups and the stowage that the vanquisher is pretty much done so on to the next model which is a chimera, which i've started by basing with dark angels green and a quick camo green drybrush. still trying to figure a way out to make the stowage look fixed to the hull, any ideas?

jasevx - February 15, 2008 08:47 AM (GMT)
Nice use of the stowage bits, just remember to put straps over them!

bram kuijpers - February 15, 2008 09:18 AM (GMT)
the commissar tank is bloody awwsome, and the chimera does look much better with that turret and stowage B)

crassius47 - February 20, 2008 02:16 PM (GMT)
good afternoon gentlemen and ladies, thak you for the good feedback but the same old excuse of too much work(roll on 55 hour weeks), poker nights and jack daniels have curtailed any modelling this week. the good news is that the stowage has arrived so off to paint that and finish the vanquisher this afternoon after i've paid the water rates.

whilst i'm here a few of questions, does anybody know where i can but predator turrets on there own from, don't fancy buying the whole kit for the turret, (i'm in the uk), also does anybody know where to get female heads to fit on the cadians from because i'm going to start on some troops soon and is testors dullcote good stuff?

cheers from sunny essex B)

Daemon-Forge - February 20, 2008 02:32 PM (GMT)
Nice load of tanks you got there

just wondering crassius47 are you from Norwich?

crassius47 - February 20, 2008 06:00 PM (GMT)
i wish, i'm from kings lynn, the culture capital of east anglia. support the city beccause the rest of my family are either arsenal, ipswich or tottenham fans and i wanted to be different when i was ten.

freebooter - February 20, 2008 10:24 PM (GMT)
No way is Jack better than Johny.

Johny is produced under licence for the queen :P

I still don't like the green on your tanks for some reason...
Maybe making the highlights crisper? They lack something in my eyes...
But don't listen to me, I'm just an alcoholic Irishman :D

crassius47 - February 21, 2008 01:28 AM (GMT)
jack is my friend (he says whilst queitly stroking the bottle), but a good whiskey is a suitable substitute, not that i'm an alcoholic yet.

i agree that the pictures don't bring out the best of the chimera but it looks ok in the flesh. i don't know if i should use a lighter shade to drybrush the green to bring out the edges, any ideas?

ps whats the difference between an alcoholic and a binge drinker?
binge drinkers don't have to go to those damn stupid meetings :P

freebooter - February 21, 2008 02:07 AM (GMT)
Alcoholics drink proper booze, not goon...

Maybe after the drybrush you could highlight the edges of the armour with a really light green?

And add some white markings. I've just realised you have the same problem to my eyes as I did with my FOW Soviet armour... Stupid Russian green.

crassius47 - February 21, 2008 11:24 PM (GMT)
a minor update on the crimera. i've painted most of the stowage and other details and added a couple of decals which are a complete pain to add. still a bit of highlighting need on some of the stowage and a few more details to be picked out

thanks to all those have commented
