Title: Titan136 Painting Adventures
Description: oh God, he's still at it...

titan136 - January 22, 2008 07:22 PM (GMT)
afternoon Bunkerians. I stumbled upon this forum early this morning, and, after browsing for a while through these amazingly long project logs, I thought I would throw mine into the mix.

I've been working on several projects over on other fourms, including Nids, Ultras and, at the moment, mainly Black Templars. I've also been toying with some Dark Eldar and World Eaters.

Perhaps I should start with some pictures of what I've painted so far:

The first two armies are pretty much on hold. My main focus right now is my current army, Black Templars

And just for good measure, although I haven't officially started these armies, here are a couple of tidbits from my Dark Eldar and World Eaters. I've already got all the minis I need for these armies and I'll be starting World Eaters soon and Dark eldar sometime Late this year.

And, something I find very helpful in keeping myself motivated, here's the checklist of what I'll be painting in the coming months:

Tyranids:
8 Genestealers
8 Genestealers
1 Hive Tyrant on Foot
2 Tyrant Guard
10 More gaunts

Black Templars:

Land Raider Crusader

Predator Annihilator
5-man Sword Brethren Squad (doghouse style)
Perhaps another 8 initiate 4 neophyte Crusader Squad

World Eaters:
9 Berserkers
Rhino
10 Berserkers
Rhino
10 Chaos Space Marines
10 Chaos Space Marines
Forgeworld World Eaters Dreadnought

Dark Eldar (not that I'll get to them anytime soon)
1 Archaon
10 Incubi Retinue
40+ warriors
3 Raiders
10 Reaver Jetbikes
9 Wyches
1 Talos
10 Mandrakes

Quite an ambitious list if I may say so myself.

Thats about it for the first entry, looking forward to sharing these with you and I hope you can lend me a hand and keep me motivated!

I've seen your BT before and love them. Any chance of more shots of the Techmarine as he likes fun?

Khrangar - January 22, 2008 07:34 PM (GMT)
I'm glad you've found your way over to AB. Everything looks great. What's the head of the techmarine from?

Yep, finally made it over here. i hear its the place to be for project logs. The head is from the new plastic devastators sprue.

Keravin - January 22, 2008 07:53 PM (GMT)
That should have said looks like fun, but I obviously got distracted :)

I like the BB instead of white on the Templars. It gives them a "weathered" look and looks like they have been on Crusade for a long while.

Very well done.

Thanks! Yeah I've always wondered how other Templars keep their shoulderpads so clean!...it seems impractical, like they stopped after every turn and spit shined their shoulderpads :P

charlie_c67 - January 22, 2008 08:05 PM (GMT)
So you did the termi heads how?

schoolcormorant - January 22, 2008 08:08 PM (GMT)

Heh look at that i'm contributing to the forums already!

QUOTE

For the templars I did a basecoat of chaos black. A thick first highlight of 50-50 codex grey and black and a second thinner highlight of pure codex grey. on more detailed minis like the termis and the marshal, I did a final highlight of 60-40 codex grey and skull white.

There are some closeups of the templars in my photobucket if you want to see more detailed pics:

QUOTE

Right now it's a little too cold outside to do any priming so i'm mainly doing a lot of building and assembly. When it gets warmer outside I'll probably start with the dreadnought.

QUOTE

The red is built up from chaos black - blood red mixes and the whites and done using scorched brown, snakebite, bleached bone and skull white successively highlighting.

Tony88 - January 23, 2008 06:43 AM (GMT)
Loving the armies man.
:) good to see people like the back to basix bases. Good thing about only living 6 hours away from the guy who makes them, is i get them in the post quicker :D

Digits - January 23, 2008 03:01 PM (GMT)
Some lovely work here mate! As an ex -longtime collector / player of BT, I have to say your vehicles are mint! Very nicely done.

Look forward to seeing the dread take shape.

DanLee - January 23, 2008 03:27 PM (GMT)
Wow !
You've got some fantastic armies here mate . How long you been doing the hobby for?I really like your nid scheme looks very effective and your carni' looks terrifying :(
I'm really looking forward to the next pic updates :)

Yeah i got the bases while i was in Aus last year (at Gold Coast) THey're really good quality and fairly priced. I've been meaning to get another batch of them since the hundred or so I bought are running low.

QUOTE

The dread is in the process of being converted. I'm trying to go for more of a venerable look and nicking ideas from the forgeworld BT vn dread. i'll see about posting some pics in the next couple of days.

I've been in an our of the hobby since junior high so almost 10 years. Grants this included a couple of 3 year breaks in between. I got back into the hobby 2 years ago and haven't stopped since. glad you fancy the nid scheme, you don't want to know how many test schemes were done before i settled on one that i liked and could be painted up rather easily!

DanLee - January 23, 2008 04:30 PM (GMT)
Oh believe me i can imagine i did a very similar thing with my nids switching from one scheme to another trying to get a quick but striking colour scheme of which i finally settled on and have now painted a trygon ( you can have a look on my log if you wish). You have done that colour scheme really well, was it quick?
By the junior high bit i'm guessing your from america if so what part?
Fantastic stuff mate. :)

Light of the Emperor - January 23, 2008 04:32 PM (GMT)
I'm from America and I don't even know what junior high is...its a mix of middle and highschool grades right?

I've been watching your BT log on Warseer. They are among my favorite marine armies and I was wondering how you paint your highlights? Mine always turn out too bold...

Heh I'm from Canada. Junior high would the the equivalent of middle school I think. It's only grades 7 and 8.

Thanks for the compliment! I've long admired your painting (and your bloody amazing games room) over at Warseer.

By the highlights I assume you mean for black? Here's the recipe I try to follow:

1) basecoat chaos black
2) do a thick highlight of 50-50 codex grey and chaos black on any edge I can see on the mini
3) do a thinner coat of pure codex grey
4) finish it off with one final highlight of watered down 70-30 codex grey and skull white.

the key is to get the thin highlights to overlap onto the thick ones, which to the eye, creates a softer transition from the base color to the highlight, almost like blending but with less effort.

hope that helps

titan136 - January 23, 2008 10:42 PM (GMT)
Here's the dread I've been working on. I wanted a more venerable looking dread than the standard one but I didn't want to shell out for a forgeworld one (and wait 3 months for it to get here) and I didn't want a metal GW one....so the only option left was to convert it!

There's still a lot more work to do on this guy, mainly adding more details, filling in the gaps between the arms and the torsoe and fixing up the head and chestplate (much of the model is just bluetacked right now) I'm pretty pleased with the pose and yes, this badboy is magnetized both at the waist and at the arms!

That Dread looks amazing, in fact all of it does because fully painted armies do look amazing. I also love the yella Dark Eldar!

Keravin - January 23, 2008 11:29 PM (GMT)
Liking the Dread and yeah I do the magnetised arms for similar poseability. Hadn't thought about doing the waist.

Angel Robertson - January 23, 2008 11:33 PM (GMT)
cool dread, breakdown on bitz?!

TheGrizz - January 23, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
Very nice Tyranids there! And as for that mencaing looking Dreadnought... consider the pose well and truely nicked...

titan136 - January 24, 2008 03:06 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the positive comments guys!

QUOTE

It might just be me but I won't game with unpainted minis :P

QUOTE

Sure thing. Most of its from the standard dread kit. The front plate on the chest is from a plastic termi + shoulderpad trim from the neck guard. The back of the front plate is from the shoulderpad as well. The head is from the shoulder portion of a tau crisis suit arm, shaved down to look like a helm and greenstuffed with a maltese cross.

The templar icon is from the templar sprues. The front armor plates are done using shaved down sarcophigous (SP?) covers included in the templars sprues.

The shield is from the wayyy old empire halberdiers.

I made the torso longer and taller using the hatch from a rhino kit. (did anyone notice this?)

Glad I could help!

flakjacket - January 24, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
Liking the dread, it's nice to see one displaying such movement, looking forward to seeing it with paint :D
Keep up the great work

DanLee - January 24, 2008 04:11 PM (GMT)
Dread looks really cool mate you've done amazingly well converting that also the scenery is fantastic too i've never had the nerve to do stuff like it , quite cautious you see don't want to muck things up!
my friend recently went on a honeymoon to Canada ,Toronto , She said it was beautiful over their and i agree .Your a lucky so and so to live in such a beautiful country . :)

Firestorm Falcon - January 25, 2008 04:47 PM (GMT)
Loving the dred especially the pose. Very cruasaderish.

firestorm - January 25, 2008 04:57 PM (GMT)
Nice conversions, I especially like the BT Chappy, how you've incorporated the Chestplate from the Chaos Champion. Keep up the good work! :)

Well I've moved my Templars over to the Band of Brothers forums, but that doesn't mean I don't have anything new to show you guys. I painted up these forgeworld rippers a while back but don't think i ever posted them, needless to say my eyes bled after painting these guys:

I also painted these genestealers last week. Finally got around to basing them tonight:

Fantastic stuff mate the FW rippers are the only ones worth having plus the flying rippers look cool too do you have any? I can see what you mean about your eyes bleeding though cuz they look very tedious to paint .
I must say they look are very striking and very alien like .
WATCH OUT !!! IT'S HIVE FLEET KALEIDASCOPE !!! :P

titan136 - February 24, 2008 07:27 PM (GMT)
So I've decided to start yet ANOTHER MARINE ARMY... I've been looking for a scheme I can paint up easily and quickly and I think I've found that in the Iron Snakes. Some of you may have seen a poster called Corai on Warseer doing them. Here's the log that inspired me: http://warseer.com/forums/science-fiction-...es-marines.html

So, on top of finishing up my black templars, I'm going to be building an Iron Snakes army, primarily using Macragge marines. Here's what I've built and based this morning:
user posted image

I gotta say, the Macragge Marines are a blessing to clean and build and despite the limited poses, they come out petty much exactly like regular tacticals in scale and size. The one problem I was having was how to deal with Sgt. Octavian. On top of his silly pose, I never use boltpistols and chainswords on my sergeants. So I've ended up converting the two copies I have of him so far and put him with my devastators:

I honestly don't know how long its going to take me to do this army. Black Templars are still going to be my primary army.

the_great_gonzo - February 24, 2008 07:37 PM (GMT)
Will be interesting to see how you paint these, the ones on the link aren't too inspiring to look at, very clean I'll admit but just boltgun metal and white.... Are you going to try some fancy none metalic metals???

Marsekay - February 25, 2008 06:26 AM (GMT)
I like the idea of iron snakes. i always like to see marines that are the rarer schemes.

I'm very bored of smurfs and DA these days.
