Title: CLassic Drop Pods

Yet more proof that I have the attention span of a small child I have started thinking about Drop Pods, specifically the old school Epic ones

and whether I can recreate them using ordinary, everyday stuff. To start with the ball float from a toilet - though preferably one that isn't in use - 68p from all good DIY shops

and the the very rough design. The valve has a diameter of 114mm, which make sit look huge compared to a Marine, but there has to be 10 of them with equipment, and if the top half is assumed to be cargo space and the bottom half landin yets and stuff it seems less over the top

I'm going to have an experiment with them, there are also cylindrical ones available, about the same height, but smaller diameter.

Do it, do it, do it

 that would be both kewl and kind've disturbing, imagine some kid reading this and dismantling his toilet to make one.

That is one awesome idea, and with a dremel so simple, stolen for Joshs BT!

That plastic will be harder than you think!. Have you thought of using the malteaser or aero bubble blastic boxes? ( you can get them in woolies). Softer plastic.

It's not to bad, harder than Plasticard, but is only about 1.5mm thick.

If you do try this you may want to buy a sacrificial one to cut up and have a check of what the plastic is like and also if there is any internal plastic. The B&Q one has moulded struts in the half that the rod comes out of.

Also the ball is made of 2 moulded hemispheres melted together, this meanns two things. First there is a damn great ridge running round the equator and second the quality control isn'y great so the halves may not line up brilliantly.

Being made of halves means that there is a weak line running round which is quite easy to snap the plastic along. My design had the doors above this line and the hinges below, obviously this isn't a great idea due to the fact the doors could snap straight off.
Solutions are eather to reduce the door size so the hinges are above the line, or redesign the hinges a bit so that the tooth shaped bits aren't structural
