Title: The Dominus Ex Machina
Description: Freak Forge and Dominus goes Titan

Dominus Ex Machina - January 12, 2008 12:29 PM (GMT)
After speaking with Asmodai Dark about it, it seems that the Titan will be worth three months of updates, well, most likely I won't finish it in three months but maybe you can all enjoy watching me fail misserably anyway. I kinda figured it needs a log anyway.

If I were to actually finish the Titan in three months (yeah right) this will then turn to my apocalypse army, in which I have every Imperial army (IG, SM, DH and WH).

First of, for you who don't know anything about this project, some info. This project started before the times of AB on warseer. The Titan is named after moi, Dominus Ex Machina, and is the work of two madmen: me and Freak Forge. Freak Forge is sculpting details (if you can call them that in this monumental scale) and I am doing all the brush-slinging. There is also a third man working behind the scenes, Mark Tait, who is a seasoned painter with more years in the hobby than I am old. He has several Golden Demons under his belt and he helps me with invaluable advice regarding the painting of this puppy. Mark joined the project just in time to help me with the interior, which is what I am currentlu working on.

So, three guys and a Titan, one slowly updated log.

First, the progress made to date, to bring you up to speed on the current status on the puppy, from newly arrived to progress pics:

As seen newly arrived from Forge World summer -07, with a dreadnought and a few other minis for scale purposes:

Paint in progress pics of the interior, so far the head and the main console in the engine/reactor room are the only pieces I've started painting, but will soon tackle the rest of the interior. However, freak forge has the 'shoulders' of the Titan with the sides of the reactor room so I can not finish until I get those pieces back.

That sculpting is top notch! well done that man!

i like the painted stuff too, the weather effect on the foot is awesome! keep it and good luck!

Awesome scuplting.

But my only one qualm with it, is the writing on the screen, it looks too much like handwriting, thats all tho...

Aside from that my fav bit of ur painting is on the cylinder things in the cockpit, where you've done hazard stripes then weathered them, they look...AMAZING....

Btw i like the second design, with the mech cogs...

This is amazing ... that man could earn a fortune with that sculpting!

The quality is amazing, and judging by the high standard of painting, will look amazing when finished,. :)

All hail Mars!

I showed the latest pieces of the interior to Mark and he instantly said that the lights didn't look right, they were to bright and in a different style than the rest of the interior, he even mentioned that they were so out of style that it looked like someone else painted them! So to make them more in line with the dull dark interior I gave them a light glaze with first some darker blue/green on the respective screens and lastly a light glaze with chaos black. They now have a very much less 'in your face' glow to them, it is now a darker, more solemn shine.

I haven't heard Marks opinion on these new lights yet, feel free to comment them! Should they be a bit lighter or darker perhaps? All suggestions are welcomed!

Also I added this to the interior of the head, some touch ups to do still but you'll get the idea "watch your head":

I did also paint the upper edge above the door, it will be there for the curious, but doesn't show in the pictures. These warning stripes will be barely visible once the princeps and the side panels are put in place but I think it's a cool little extra detail that no one will hardly notice when done.

As you can also see, I have not yet tackled the two main screens, I'm still experimenting with them! I was thinking about making one of them some kind of targeting screen, but the two servitors in the Titan seem pretty much like they are handling the weapons so maybe I’ll put the targeting screens with them instead, yes/no?

Angel Robertson - January 15, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
I think targeting screens with servitors makes more sense for sure!

And the lights do look more in keeping with the dark nature of the interior but i kinda liked the bright in your face ones!

Great work!

How on earth did you do the metalics in the reactor room thing

Deadley Hedley - January 16, 2008 12:30 AM (GMT)
All I can say mate is that once this bad boys all finished Its going to be so sweet :D .The detail is out of this world ,Keep up the cool work

KayvaanShrike - January 16, 2008 10:56 AM (GMT)
For the screens in front of the Moderati you could do them with similar stuff on them to an aricraft HUD, or some sort of RADAR screen, since they seem to sit fairly low in the head and so presumably don't have the best view out of the front windows.

I like the screens now, they are less in your face as you say, and are more dark and more mechanicus tbh!

bram kuijpers - January 16, 2008 01:51 PM (GMT)
my jaw just hit the basement man :D
the sculpting looks fantastic so does the painting , what colours are the leg sculpts going to be?

Lord Commander Eidolon - January 16, 2008 11:55 PM (GMT)
to be honest, the brighter screens didnt look out of place at all, unless your doing light sourcing on the screens, if you think about it the screens would look more vibrant in the darkness of the cockpit

Deserter - January 17, 2008 12:40 PM (GMT)
Looking great so far mate! Love the sculpting FF has done for you and I really love the metallics! Keep up the great work!

QUOTE (Apologist;@(that other site))

ix) Since this is a Warhound, you could use a skaven skull (on the plague monk sprue) with a few modifications to make a dog skull. This could be the ancient remains of the warhound the wetware was drawn from for the Machine Spirit.
x) Heavy, heavy weathering on the interior – this thing is thousands of years old. Perhaps the corridor could have a cog/crenellation-decorated red carpet, worn thin and threadbare over the years?

:)

These two are good ideas. I can see a hound skull on the "dash" with candles as a little shrine between the moderatii.

And red carpet in the hallway in the torso....

Jester - January 17, 2008 08:48 PM (GMT)
Awesome stuff as always dominus !
the sculpting is out of this world as is the painting i love the fact that you weathered the yellow and black chevrons where the crew would walk through the attention to detail is insane!
one word mate MEGA!
