Title: Arctic Wolves - Core Units
Description: BoB work

Penguin of Death - January 6, 2008 03:38 PM (GMT)
So completed models is a bit of a new one for me, but who knows, maybe it'll catch on.

As in the title I'll try and put core units into this log and keep the main log for finished pieces from this log and the more intersting conversions/WiPs/things I'll never finish

Suppose I better geton and make something then...

Right, a plan:

Paint Stuff.

Hmm..

A better Plan then:

The Great Company is in a period of transition, up until recently the Wolf Lord has been a traditional Spcae Wolf, if it's moving shoot it until it stops then hit it with something. The new Lord has come up through the Ad-mech and as result has a background in the technology of the Imperium. This has caused a few minor divisions amongst the troops but has given them access to some more interesting tech.

Bloodclaws
Young and fearless: No helmets, who needs them. They have only known command under the new Lord so are open to his ideas and new technology

Grey Hunters
They've survived this long and are less inclined to go into battle without a bit more protection. More helmets and more traditional weapons

Wolf Guard
A bit set in their ways they are wary of new ideas and will be using the WHFB Chaos warrior torsos, doghouse style, and the wolfy backpacks

Wolf Guard Termis
As above, and using the WHFB furry cloaks and Mordheim Hairy heads

Scouts
Beardy Metal scouts for the moment

Rune Priest
To be converted Inq Coteaz

Lord
Half done. Techie armour, knackered servo harness & techie axe. Furry cloak and big sword. Mainly wolf colours, but some Ad-mech red

Themes thoughout
Stubby bolters, I like the look of them and they don't get caught in your cloak
Relatively traditional colours, Shadow/Fenris grey, but more Ice blue to emphasise the Arctic idea

Just to show I am at least doing something for BoB here's a handful of Grey Hunters, nothing particually interesting so far, though my first set of homemade kneeling legs on the meltagunner

Looking good Penguin of Death, I like the kneeling legs. Never could get them to work for me something always goes wrong. Did you pin the segments together?

Penguin of Death - January 10, 2008 04:07 PM (GMT)
Went with the kneeless legs as I though they'd be easier to disguise mistakes.
1) Cut at hips, knees and used an 0.5mm drill to take off the foot (relatively) neatly - not really necessary, but I thought I'd try
2) Drilled a hole the same thickness as a paperclip all the way through the upper legs
3) Put the upper legs in position on the lowers as if they were standing and then drilled through the existing holes into the lower legs. Repeated the other way with the uppers lined up on the lower torso. Hope this makes sense, it gave me the legs aligned properly as they were when they started, but with wire running through them.
4) Bent to desired position and GS'ed the gaps

Lt.Gregor - January 10, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
I'll try it again when the most recent destruction's are out of the way.

Penguin of Death - January 14, 2008 09:23 AM (GMT)
Some progress, but not really worth photos.

Sprayed a load of Grey Hunter Bits and have started picking out the armour in Fenris Grey, think there's enough bits at the moment for 7 with bolters and the melta.

Started experimenting with the Doghouse pattern armour using WHFB chaos warrior legs, though to add to the challenge I'm carving out one of theire cloaks as well to see if it can be fitted over a marine torso and arms with the backpack over the cloak

Sprayed a FW Vindicator from eBay black while I was waiting, so that's ready for some camo

Asmodai Dark - January 14, 2008 10:06 AM (GMT)
Glad to see your getting into the doghouse pattern armour although some configurations look... odd. You'll see what I mean when you have them.

Also glad to see the paintings about to start... :D

QUOTE (Asmodai Dark @ Jan 14 2008, 10:06 AM)
Glad to see your getting into the doghouse pattern armour although some configurations look... odd. You'll see what I mean when you have them.

Now I'm intrigued.

Though I'm amazed at how little work is involved if you just want the legs on a Marine torso. As mentioned earlier they are only going to be a small percentage of the army so one box should go a long way.
Also discovered that the most stupid of the Space wolf bare heads (llike the one on the Meltagunner) can be easily converted to look like Wolverine - not a particually useful discovery, but it amused me

Asmodai Dark - January 14, 2008 04:47 PM (GMT)
Basically its the bolter marine which looks a little odd - from the fron there fine but as you rotate them they look skinny. Then again I didnt do half the sculpting that Doghouse does to armour them up...

Other then that though, they look completely natural, and your marking me want to dig them out again :D

One box? so ten legs? If you havent got them give me a shout - chaos warriors are stupidly priced if your not using the whole model and I've definately got that many spare.

Penguin of Death - January 15, 2008 09:42 AM (GMT)
There's 12 Warriors in a box and I got them from Gamers Warehouse, so under £15, and somewhere I have a couple more.
The result does look good, and with a bit (a lot) of carving you can also fit the furry cloak over a Marine body/shoulders, so no excuse for you not to resurect you Wolves

Started blocking out the Vindicator with colours. It will feature the wintry urban camo like my Rhino, but it's such a great model I dont want it to cover all of it an disguise it too much.
I'm also considering the heresy of converting a FW model - well only a bit. The Vindicator was bough built and badly primed from eBay, who ever built it has the blade raised more than I'd like so was considering working to fix that, while I was looking at it I realised that the struts that hold the blade just look like box steel, the GW one has something that looks like a piston and is a bit more functional, so I'm thinking of using some plastirod to replace the lower strut

Penguin of Death - January 18, 2008 02:20 PM (GMT)
Gave in and dismantled the Vindi, looking at it more I realised that the blade had been glued on too low to the struts, this is why if they were horizontal the blade was about 1cm below ground.
People should be vetted before being allowed to buy FW products, some kind of questionaire to determine their modelling skills.

Grey Hunters continue, should finish the first 10 and get some pictures taken tomorrow. Will also prime some of the metal bits, maybe start on the Long Fangs.

Penguin of Death - January 22, 2008 09:18 AM (GMT)
I don't think the metal Long Fangs/Devastators were ever supposed to be released to the public, they were actually designed as some kind of test for staff who wanted to be promoted!
So far they are Chaos warrior legs, SW torsos and the metal backpacks pinned on. Arms to be pinned tonight

Penguin of Death - January 24, 2008 03:39 PM (GMT)
Long Fangs built, just need a few final details in GS, mainly the ribbing on the back of their knee to make the warrior legs look like power armour

Decided that as the Grey Hunters are mainly quite static I'll try out some more leg repositioning oon the upcoming Bloodclaws

Actually got around to getting the latest SW Codex, though from now on I think it should be refered to as a pamphlet. Codex suggests a thick, weighty book - this is far from it. Anyway it does mean that I may end up with some game legal troops and I may even arm them sensibly, rather than a using a combination of "what do I have?" and "what looks cool?"

I also bought a Juggernaut for some serious conversion. I've seen them used with SW before - once in a Golden Demon I can't find the site for and once here

http://www.miniaturespace.net/hjorl.htm

both of which were nice enough, but were still Juggernauts painted SW colours and covered in SW bits. I don't want it still to be a Juggernaut, I want it to be a Fenrisian Wolf. I can cheat slightly by having it armoured and bionic, but I still intend to change a lot.

-Remove all the chaosy bits
-GS fur on the lower half of the legs and body to show the armour is covering an animal
-Replace the top of the head with GS fur and ears, may have to redo the eyes too
-Depending on feasability cut the body in half and lengthen it as the Juggernaut is a bit squat as it is

TheGrizz - January 24, 2008 04:14 PM (GMT)
Now that is a plan worthy of a fox who's Professor of Cunning at Oxford...

I demand WIP pictures!

jasevx - January 24, 2008 07:12 PM (GMT)
Yup, keep it coming, great to see more of these conversions

Penguin of Death - January 25, 2008 09:21 AM (GMT)
A Psychic Fox?

I have to do some W before it is officially iP

Was out last night so only had a chance to have a bit more of a look at the Juggernaut, in addition to the above I hope to:

-Add a big wolf tail, obvious really
-Lengthen the rear legs a bit, it looks a bit like a staffie at the moment (Staffordshire Bull Terrior)

titan136 - January 25, 2008 02:31 PM (GMT)
I'm really liking the sawed off bolters and the pose of the meltagunner is very realistic. looking forward to seeing your conversion on the juggernaught, although I think you should have waited for the new one to be released!

Penguin of Death - January 25, 2008 08:16 PM (GMT)
Much as I like the idea of converting the plastic Juggernaut the new model is even further from the correct wolf shape than the metal one

Penguin of Death - January 28, 2008 10:40 AM (GMT)
Odds and ends

Grey hunters continue

Metal scouts begun

Long Fangs need a bit more GS work on the feet to smooth them out

Some good looking stuff here :)
I like the kneeling conversion a lot, and the looking fangs are looking good too.
Nice schme as well :)

Firestorm Falcon - January 28, 2008 05:32 PM (GMT)
Those 'Doghouse pattern' longfangs are looking impressive and those grey hunters are comming on well.

Penguin of Death - February 1, 2008 09:24 AM (GMT)
I'm away for the weekend so I though I should at least get a bit of paint on to the Long Fangs

I'll tidy them up next week

Deserter - February 1, 2008 11:29 AM (GMT)
I really like the Long Fangs, they look like they're advancing and firing with determination :) Nice work!

Penguin of Death - February 1, 2008 11:53 AM (GMT)
Irritatingly I used SW fron torsos on all of them and then twigged that other than the H Bolter they'd all be hidden by the gun.

The Chaos Warrior legs have turned out well, I wish there was a a bit more variety between their poses, but as you say it is a determined walking pose
