Title: What about Bob
Description: 1st Saint Paulus- 2nd Company
Easy E - January 5, 2008 10:16 AM (GMT)

Welcome,
This project log will cover the construction and completion of the 2nd Company of the 1st Saint Paulus Armored Regiment- nicknamed the Timberwolves. Some of you maybe aware of the unique nature of the 1st Saint Paulus all ready from Warseer.
Fluff:
The 1st Saint Paulus hail from a frozen ball of water near the Obscurus Corridor. The planet's surface is composed 95% of freshwater oceans, with a equatroial archipelago of rocky islands. The vast freshwater oceans are locked beneath a layer of ice kilometers thick, because the surface climate never reaches above freezing.
As a result of the hostile environment, the inhabitants of Saint Paulus live in hive like drilling rigs scattered across the surface of the ice sheets. Life outside of this rigs is impossible, as a human could not survive more than a few hours exposed to the windswept landscape. Instead, the people of Saint Paulus drill through the surface of the ice and collect freshwater into huge carriers that take it to the capital. There it is shipped off world in exchange for goods.
The only feasible way for the Imperial Governor to control these vast swathes of frozen ice is to patrol it with armored forces. It is these forces that keep the independent minded drilling rigs within the Imperial fold.
Due to the increased military needs of the Imperium, for the first time the planet of Saint Paulus has been called on to provide troops to the Imperial Guard along with their regular tithe of water. The Imperial Governor has responded with the 1st Saint Paulus. Colonel Wolfe was chosen to lead not because of his exceptional skillas an officer, but because of his association with a political rival. In addition, Saint Paulus does not have the manufacturing base to provide a full Regiment with the most up to date Imperial gear. As a result, many units are using older, easier to construct local vehicles.
Order of Battle:
The 1st Saint Paulus is composed of 7 Companies under the command of Colonel Thomas Wolfe.
1st- Line- Major William Goethe
2nd- Line- Captain Gerhard Blix
3rd- Recon- Captain Kurt Krebs
4th- Seige- Captain Erick Walders
5th- Reserves- Lt Werner Halder

Oh yeah, here's a Templates/Tutorial posting I put on here about Scylla Tankettes.
Essentially, they are just armored crew compartment sentinels for gameplay.
http://z3.invisionfree.com/The_Ammobunker/...p?showtopic=169and here is the original link at GW's Website that inspired me to make my own:
http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/imp...tte/default.htmSadly, I don't think this board supports attachments, or I would just put the templates right here.
jasevx - January 5, 2008 05:11 PM (GMT)
still can't get over how good paper models look. have you played these at any GW yet?
Easy E - January 5, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
We only have independent stockist in my area, however they were very well received when I took them to the Twin Cities 40K Meet and Greet. They did cause a few double takes though.
Easy E - January 10, 2008 10:34 AM (GMT)
Here's a tank commander I sculpted and painted.

Since Saint Paulus is a frozen ice world, they usually try to stay buttoned up, but sometimes you have to take a look see. You can see he is wearing a parka, face mask, and ski goggles to protect him from the elements.
You can also see why I paint my tanks in MSPaint. I suck at painting.
Asmodai Dark - January 10, 2008 10:59 AM (GMT)
Looks alright to me fella :) Although imageshack, argh! with teh popups!
Are you gonna carry that over onto the regular infantry?
Easy E - January 10, 2008 03:23 PM (GMT)
Yes I am.

I didn't post it before since these guys are an armored fist for the 5th reserve company, not part of BoB per se.
Easy E - January 21, 2008 11:14 AM (GMT)
No Pics...
The tracks and main hull of the 1st Heavy Bolter Armed Leman are done. Now I just need to do some detailing and add the turret.
bram kuijpers - January 21, 2008 11:19 AM (GMT)
the tanks look very nice its just that the tanks could use some stuff from tank spreu, but its working so keep going
Easy E - January 27, 2008 07:16 PM (GMT)
Oddly, I don't know anyone with the IG tank sprue to loan me bitz from.
For the record, I have just completed a Leman Russ with exposed Tank Commander. I won't have pics until Friday though. I just wanted to put my completed unit on the record in case I can't get my pics up in time.
Maelstrom - January 28, 2008 10:26 AM (GMT)
those models kick [arse] you really can't tell they are made from paper, nice job on the sculpted crewman too looks very nice.
I might have a crack at a card or paper model, maybe a hellblade fighter, you got any tips?
Easy E - January 28, 2008 11:00 AM (GMT)
Decide carefully on what type of medium you want to build with. Different mediums have different properties.
For example, Plasticard is sturdy and precise but costs the most and maybe harder to find in your area. Thick cardboard is relatively easy to come by really cheap; on th eother side the edges need to be sealed and the cardboard may warp when painted. No matter what material you use, be aware of it's limitations.
Just like anything else the more you practice the better you get. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't look 100% awesome at first. Be prepared to exchange time for moeny.
Finally, test fit, test fit, test fit.
I also recommend you join the BWC Archive. They are a great resource for scratchbuilding models of any type.
Edit: My next sculpted crewmen I'm going to try and get more of him out of the turret. Maybe some arms gripping the edges of the hatch? We'll see if I'm up to the sculpting challenge. It will be a bit easier as I can put his hands in mittens. No finger sculpting for teh win!1!1!!!
Maelstrom - January 28, 2008 11:43 AM (GMT)
cheers dude, just joined BWC archive they have a very nice selection of templates ready to print off.
On the plasticard front, the stuff is impossible to find i've been to hardware stores, art shops and the big hobby store in my area and none of them have it
So instead i will use card, already been using it to repair the predator in my BOB log, i might make a hellblade as the finale of my BOB log :D
fingers aren't to hard to sculpt, if you have a flat surface to put them on like the hatch you mentioned its just a case of getting the shape of a hand and then using a knife to separate it into fingers , but trying to sculpt a pointing hand is just death and the fingers normally break off even if u have used a wire base lol
I'd go with the mittens cos they go nicely with your winter theme
charlie_c67 - January 28, 2008 02:32 PM (GMT)
Check
here for plasticard.
Easy E - January 28, 2008 06:05 PM (GMT)
Maelstrom- when you say card do you mean thin cereal packet card or heavy cardboard box style card?
Another alternative I have seen people use is the plastic from CD cases.
A good way to build a large model like a super heavy or a flyer is to create the basic shape using styro foam cut to the basic shape and sanded. Then you can use thin cereal card to plate over the styro foam. Then detail it with plastic bitz, left over sprue, straws, or whatever found materials you want. Once built, give it a coat of watered down pva, then paint. One completed model.
Maelstrom - January 28, 2008 08:46 PM (GMT)
the card i use is a mix of stuff, i've got thin corrugated card off boxes, thin card from model boxes the main stuff i use is like thick cereal card that i get off Cds that i order off the net, i got a pic of it:

its pretty sturdy but the pieces aren't big enough to do larger models, they can roughly do 2 side panels for a rhino.
the plastic from a CD case would involve a lot of work to get into shape wouldn't it? I like your idea of using styro foam i'll have a look in the garage tomorrow to see if i have any knocking around.
I've got the plans for a hellblade off BWC now to, just need to print them out B)
cheers for the link Charlie
Easy E - February 1, 2008 11:31 AM (GMT)
Yes, a variety of cardstock is good. You want to be able to vary the thickness.
Here's what I have for the first BoB deadline.

For some reason I couldn't get the pictures of the Russ by itself to work properly today. It is rather frustrating because they are sitting on disk, but the computer just can't seem to read them. Oh well, I'll post more when I can.
Firestorm Falcon - February 1, 2008 04:32 PM (GMT)
You know full well what I think of your tanks :D.
Is that a baneblade I see? If so is it lackof-pattern and how hard was it to make?
Easy E - February 1, 2008 05:08 PM (GMT)
It is a B-blade you see.
It is not Lackof's design. It is my design. Sinse I have been slowly putting it together from templates I design as I go, it has been tough going. That being said, it will be uniquely mine. Until I post the templates on Warseer that is.
You can see more in my Saint Paulus Girl project log here:
http://z3.invisionfree.com/The_Ammobunker/...p?showtopic=832Edit: Once my templates are done, it will be a simple issue to make some variants too.
Easy E - February 4, 2008 09:17 AM (GMT)
Okay, here's a better pic of the tank I finished.

I think the crewman turned out looking pretty good.
Easy E - February 15, 2008 04:29 PM (GMT)
I'm thinking of building a board to represent the frozen, icy terrain of Saint Paulus. To make things extra complicated, I want the board to be very portable. My plan is simple. I will use a white sheet with some spray on it to facilitate ground cover. This can be folded up and packed for transport. Hills and drifts can be made by simply stacking books under the sheet.
Secondly, I will make some buildings that I will be able to flat pack. I will use the tmeplate of the FW Taros buildings and create these buildings from Cardstock. What else really.
Here is the models I will be trying to replicate in a very crude and flat packing form:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/tarosb.htmIf anyone has an idea on how to make portable forests I am all ears.
Easy E - February 16, 2008 09:59 AM (GMT)
Here's a bit of WIP.

This is the side track and sponson of a Conqueror. The printing came out terrible, so it is rather spotty. I used to cut out and glue on each of the rivets seperately, but gave up on that after a couple of tanks. I have since gone back and added them in in MSPaint. It is a trade off in time for detail.

I'm actually working on a Heavy Bolter equipped Leman at the moment. I built this piece due to a manufacturing error. I accidentally printed off two of the same sides. I didn't notice my mistake until I was half way done building the hull and gluing the track sections on. It made a really funny looking tank. So, I had to add a sponson so I could re-use the parts on a Conqueror. Good thing I'm building so many of these things.
Galikoe588 - February 16, 2008 05:32 PM (GMT)
HI love your stuff dude.
what is bwc???
Easy E - February 21, 2008 09:41 AM (GMT)
BWC is a yahoo group that is immensely helpful for those that like to scratchbuild. I believe the official title is the BWC Archive 1 and BWC Archive 2.
Here's my most recent tank:

I'm not super happy with the battle cannon barrel. That may require some more tweaking. Otherwise, the second Leman Russ is done. I think I'm ahead of schedule even.
Easy E - February 21, 2008 09:44 AM (GMT)
So, here's what I have for the first 1,000 pts. section so far.

All that is needed to complete is a Conqueror battle tank. I also think I want 1 to sculpt 1 crewman for the Conqueror and 1 officer for the Vanquisher. We'll see if I get around to it.
Here's what I have for the complete 2nd Company.

The unit markings on the Scylla and Destroyer need to be updated to match the markings for the 2nd company.
Easy E - February 29, 2008 03:55 PM (GMT)
The flat packing terrain isn't working out so good.
That is all.
Easy E - March 10, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
Here's the progress on the Conqueror:

I have run into a small snag with my printer. Hopefully it will be sorted this week so I can get the rest of the Conqueror printed out and assembled before the deadline.
Then, I haven't forgot about my Baneblade. For more updates on that check the Saint Paulus Girl Project log.
Easy E - March 15, 2008 02:09 AM (GMT)
Text update. I just printed up the last pieces for the Conqueror.
schoolcormorant - March 15, 2008 08:55 AM (GMT)
Nice work Easy E,
Could any of these prints be applied to plasticard?
SC
Angel Robertson - March 15, 2008 07:20 PM (GMT)
You took the words right out my mouth!
AR
TheGrizz - March 16, 2008 11:01 PM (GMT)
You know, I have to hand it to you mate, you've made some bloody outstanding models there!
Are the tracks a little bigger than normal though? Have to say from the pictures I've seen that they're a better match than the current ones.
Easy E - March 17, 2008 04:13 PM (GMT)
These prints can be applied to Plasticard. I just don't have any. :(
I will try to do a picture comparing the track sections I built to a "real" track section. Piccies coming soon.
Conqueror is now 80% complete.
Easy E - March 18, 2008 03:32 PM (GMT)
Conqueror Done...

Again, I left the hatch open so I can add a crewmen later. I have one crewmen Painting in Progress and one Sculpting in Progress. Perhaps I will post some in process shots.
In other news, the first 1,000 pts of the 2nd Company of the 1st Saint Paulus "Timberwolves" Armored Regiment is now done!
Onto the second half of the company. It will consist of the following construction projects:
1 Commissar Destroyer
2 Leman Russ with Las Cannon
1 Exterminator
Easy E - April 4, 2008 10:47 PM (GMT)
Some more WIP stuff. The sides of a pair of Leman Russ.

Each tanks has different motivational scripting. In this case, they say "Praise Him" and "Big Guns Never Tire".
TheGrizz - April 5, 2008 06:59 AM (GMT)
Bah, as usual, I find something out several weeks after it happened...
Awesome Conqueror though mate!
Good choice for the motivational lines, very in-character for the Imperium!
Easy E - April 6, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
1st Saint Paulus Regiment
Colonel Thomas Wolfe Commanding
Stratego Designation: Timberwolves
Saint Paulus is a frozen wasteland of a world located in the outskirts of the Obscurus Corridor. The equator is ringed by a few Tiaga forest encrusted islands. Vast glacial sheets of ice stretch over the surface of the planet, and beneath it lies the precious fresh water. 98.2% of the planets surface is water covered by miles thick layers of ice.
The people of Saint Paulus either live in the capital spaceport/spire or in one of the water retreival rigs that dot the surface of the ice caps. These rigs drill down through the ice, and pump out the freshwater from below. From there the inhabitants fill vast mobile tankers and ship them to the Capital, where the precious water is loaded onto transports and sent to nearby Hive and Agri worlds. Living on a rig is the only way to survive.
Even on the warmest parts of Saint Paulus' surface, a man in thermal gear would not survive a full day. The cold wind howls over the broken ice packs, and cuts through the best thermal protection. The only viable method of transport is mechnized.
As a result of the hostile climate, the Governor of Saint Pualus keeps a small standing force of fully mechanized PDF to comply with the Lex Imperialis. These forces are needed to patrol the surfaces of Saint Paulus for potential inhuman invaders and to keep the scattered Rigs in line.
Only recently has the Adeptus Administratum called on Saint Paulus to provide a regiment to the Imperial Guard. The Governor choose the PDF Regiment of Colonel Thomas Wolfe to answer the call of duty for the Emperor. All thought many whisper that the Governor sent Colonel Wolfe off world because his loyalty to his father's political party was greater than that to the Governor.
Regardless of the political reasons for their selection, the 1st Saint Paulus equipped themselves to the highest levels available. However, it could only muster 5 Companies, and not all of them were equipped to the highest Imperial standard. Some out of date designs were pressed into service to fill numbers, such as Ragnaroks, Guardian armored cars, and other local variants.
They left Saint Paulus, never expecting to see home again.
Easy E - April 6, 2008 08:34 PM (GMT)
Here's a peak at how the 1st Saint Paulus Regiment is organized. I've hinted at the organization in some of my other posts, so here it is. The order of battle for the 1st Saint Paulus.
The line color of the box is the Company color, and the box is the individual unit color. So a red line with a blue box would be represented on the tank as:

I don't have enough room on this Visio page, but since I compiled this I have added the 10th Super-Heavy Company composed of 3 super-heavy tanks. I am currently working on the first Baneblade called the Saint Paulus Girl. She has her own dedicated Project Log that I work on in addition to this BoB log.
I have also toyed with the idea of adding the 6th Company- Logisitcs. This would primarily be trucks, land crawlers, and Griffon Chassis haulers, and armored recovery vehicles. I'm undecided at this point.
Easy E - April 7, 2008 05:39 PM (GMT)
Here's the entire the army pic. This is the 1st, 2nd and 5th company so far.

This pic is just for reference.
Digits - April 7, 2008 05:43 PM (GMT)
Man, you sure are nuts!! :P
I mean that in the kindest and warmest kind of way I know how, but that lot is a real labour of love!!!!
I would love to see some of them up close!
Any plans for super heavies?
