Title: Maelstroms Band of Brothers
Description: My Word Bearers

Maelstrom - January 4, 2008 01:34 PM (GMT)
user posted image

Hi, well after a nice Christmas and new years break of eating and drinking too much i have returned to the world of the ammo bunker to find the band of brothers competition is about to begin, I love the sound of the event and its a good community building idea.

Anyhow enough of my ramblings, I will use this log for my Word Bearers now. my existing log will be used for my traitor guard, the tau auxiliaries and any other stuff i work on.

So for the event I will be painting my Word Bearers army sections of this are already finished but i will be adding to the army as well, so onto the army list:

The theme of my army is that it is a Word Bearers crusade that is trying to spread the word of Chaos either by indoctrination or just plain old force, the army therefore is entirely chaos undivided with the cult troops that ive got in the form of khorne bezerkers being converted and re-named but still using the same rules. I will get a better version of my fluff up soon but this gives you my general theme.

*Everything in Bold is already painted, and i currently have all the models in the list most are at least built, with some being undercoated.

yh i agree the only daemons i got are some of the old plague bearers that i found in the garage lol. I'm gonna get the beast herd after the vindicator as i have some nice ideas for some lesser daemons made from them.
Im working on the fluff, i'll write up some stuff about the chosen and disiciples of Agamoth as well as the general background of the army.

QUOTE

I no i have the habit of buying stuff before i've finished my other stuff :P and with uni reducing the amount of time i have 2 paint it kinda builds up lol. the raptors and 2 of the marine squads i've actually had since the chaos codex before this one was released but i lost interest in the hobby for a few years so they were just lying around. :(

on the test model front check out my log in my sig, it has some pictures of the stuff i've already done

Heres the stuff that i have done so far:

user posted image

the terminators and dark apostle still need shoulder pads doing, and in the case of the terminators they need their arms painting to, seen as so much has been done on them i'll count them as finished for the competition.

I'm gonna try get my digi camera working so i can get some decent pics up for once to.

So For the first month of the BOB im going to do:

*10 man chaos marine squad
*bezerker dread

total 310 pts

for those of you who havent seen it here is the bezerker dread, still needs some greenstuff work on the body and legs and the 2nd arm converted before i can begin painting it:

Between you and the Nurgle log I'm actually surprised to find Chaos armies amongst BOB that I really like. Usually I find them overdone, but looking forward to seeing more.

cheers dude glad you like them, i no what you mean about chaos armies being over done, i'd started these before the new codex came out and i was one of 2 chaos players at the store, now it seems that every1 has them since the new codex was released lol

Lord Commander Eidolon - January 5, 2008 02:37 AM (GMT)
the new chaos codex has taken the mutability and "chaos" away, no choice for your characters or units anymore should be renamed

codex vanilla evil marines

love your dread though mate

pre heresy in a way

Dino - January 5, 2008 02:50 AM (GMT)
WOW! Great GS work on the Dread man. I love it. This army looks really good so far from what I can see. Good luck with Bob man.

the_great_gonzo - January 5, 2008 10:31 AM (GMT)
good luck with this, trying to get a good deep red was a paint when I had WB's, are you using foundation paints now?

Easy E - January 5, 2008 11:06 AM (GMT)
The GS on the dread looks nice, especially teh sarcophagus.

For WordBearers I recommend a lot of banners.

DaCone2 - January 5, 2008 11:32 AM (GMT)
Those look really good. Especially your conversions

Maelstrom - January 5, 2008 12:38 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the kind words guys,

QUOTE

I had trouble getting it right, the first batch i tried came out slightly pink but now i have a simple way of making it:

Base coat: Black
1st coat: mechrite red
2nd coat: a few layers of watered down red gore
3rd coat: slight highlight of blood red on edges

i also leave black lines between the red and the other colours such as the banding on shoulder pads or leg armor, then once the red is done i use a mix of 50/50 scab red and chaos black and paint that over the black lines it helps to blend in the red and also make it stand out.

The colour looks good in the flesh none of the pics i take actually do my stuff justice lol :(

QUOTE

i've got loads of back banners planned for my chosen similar to that of the aspiring champion of the squad i've finished, but i also like to add loads of parchment with scriptures on my troops.

i might do big banners on my vehicles and on the dreads.

QUOTE
codex vanilla evil marines

LOL, i miss stuff from the previous codex such as the rules for chosen i thought that having terminators mixed in with power armour was reall characterful and the ability to make ever member an aspiring champion was also cool. i no you can do this with the new terminator rules but i still liked the old chosen rules.

I will get some better pics up later, going to be working on the other arm for the dread,

oh yh i will put a rough sketch up of the idea for the word bearer fanatics
which are inspired by Lord Commander Eidolons suggestions in my other lol

incase you havent seen it:

QUOTE
on the word bearer fanatics front, i think they should have GS god icons all over there armour, from all the gods, marks of self flagellation cencers of smelly chaos things and what not, maybe all skull type masks? try to get hold of marauder arms for the scarification and flagellated marks

cheers

Maelstrom - January 5, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
well here is a unrelated quick update, the picture of the fanatic came out crap so im going to re-do it and post it tomorrow.

but here is the update, on my travels i found a nice bargain (or mistake :D) a 2nd hand predator for £4 in the other war gaming shop in wolverhampton it has to be the worst built model i have ever seen but the turret was with it so i brought it to rebuild:

user posted image

it was missing both of the side panels the sponsons were attached but i've had to remove them but both were lascannons in a very bad state. Ive begun to rebuild the sids with card seen as both the art shop in wolverhampton and the big hobbycraft store in wednesfield dont stock plasticard <_< .

I found 2 spair heavy bolters, and brought a marine from the same shop for like 5p its pretty mashed but i intend 2 have it impaled on the front of the tank (if any of you have any chapter you don't like let me know and i will paint him up in their colours :) ) so i have all the bits to repair it.

I have added the point for it to the army list and will paint it up properly for next months BOB.

On this months BOB front i have begun doing the basic colours on the marines, still need to make an icon for them though and the green stuffing is nearly complete on the dread.

cheers

Mentor legion it is :D I thought you liked mentor legion though seen as you had the masterfully painted army of them?

On to the updates for today then:

The marine holding a head and the one with the mashed up chain sword were both 2nd hand and i've had to do some work on them to make them look better than the condition they were in.

here are 4 WIP members of the marine squad for this months BOB, i built and converted these to be running with their CC weapons before the new Codex came out, but now chaos marines have CC weapons and bolters as standard so its a bit pointless lol.
Ive chopped the hand off the undercoated one as i will be making him into an icon bearer for the squad.

on another note the BOB competition is encouraging us to post tutorials and seen as some people at the GW store have been asking how i do my city bases i was thinking of making a tutorial, my question is would any of you guys be interested in it?

my fluff will be ready soon i'll post it in this log instead of the fluff threads as that way all my BOB stuff will be together.

cheers

Maelstrom - January 8, 2008 10:14 PM (GMT)
wow, i dont post for one day and my logs almost at the bottom shows everyone is getting involved :D

well here is an update on the predator i am repairing so as it is ready to paint for next Months BOB:

user posted image

the sides are constructed, and im currently working on the sponsons. the exhausts haven't come out exactly identical but its chaos i can just blame it on that lol, it is my first scratch build (even though it is just side panelings) im happy with how it has come out.

on the turret front, the commander is currently having his right hand made to be holding a book and seen as word bearers like driving round and converting people to chaos im working on speakers to be added to the sides of the turret so as the word can be spread better :D , plus its nice and characterful.
the finished model will of course be covered in parchment and streamers with scripture on, as well as the impaled mentor legion marine attached to the front.

On this months BOB front i have the pieces to make an icon, and all the marines other than the icon bearer have had the basic colours done (didn't see the point of a pic as they are at the same stage as the ones i posted the other day) the dreadnoughts base is also in the process of being painted.

C&C welcome

Maelstrom

oh yeah let me know if i should make the tutorial i've mentioned in the previous post :)

Maelstrom - January 14, 2008 05:14 PM (GMT)
Hi guys well it is time for another update, it is late but thats due 2 uni exams last week.

This months BOB stuff is coming along nicely the chaos marine squad should be finished in the next few days and here is where the dread currently stands:

user posted image

just the base coat for the red i will be doing the metallics later on, the base is done just need to paint the dead fire warrior.

and seen as i feel i did well in my exams i decided to reward myself :D :

as well as getting a character design bok out of the uni library so i can read up ready for my games development module.

Ive been doing the odd bit of work on the vindicator, ive been trying to give it more of a chaos look:

user posted image

i'm aiming to get it built by the end of the month and will probably do it at the same time as the predator for next months BOB.

looking awesome! i like the new panels on the pred, when they're painted they'll probably look exactly the same as the real ones. Can't wait to see more.

Keravin - January 14, 2008 11:17 PM (GMT)
The Green stuffing looks excellent.

Lord Commander Eidolon - January 16, 2008 11:46 PM (GMT)
got to say mate, lately ive seen a lot of chaos armies, not many have been to the standard of yours, on the fanatic front im glad i could be of service, are the fanatics going to be human or space marines?

Deserter - January 17, 2008 12:53 AM (GMT)
Looking very nice mate, everything :) Looks like a good score in that Predator and your marines are looking brilliant, can't wait to see the Vindicator take shape even more! Brilliant stuff :)

The commander is just tacked together at the moment(needs sum GS on the arm 2) but you get the idea, hes supposed to be reading sum unholy text or something like that which is being broad cast out the speaker (need 2 add another 1) to scare/indoctrinate the enemy :D

here is my question to you guys tho:

should i sculpt something onto the demolisher barrel b4 i add it? i was thinking of a demonic face like the one on the battle cannon on the defiler.

and here is a random thing i found on photobucket which i found funny (in a geeky way B) )

cheers, i'm going to count them as khorne bezerkers, on the subject of chosen i've got some im currently building ready to paint for next months BOB, im using Dark angels parts for them combined with some GS details, might put a pic of them up tomorrow.

the GS on the fanatic was really time consuming to, was sitting squinting at it for about half an hour lol

Firestorm Falcon - January 26, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
Very nice stuff. Especially the freehand on the shoulders. You could try and put a little white dot in the corner of the eye lenses, it would bring them out a bit more.

Keep going.

titan136 - January 26, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
that vindi came out rather well! love the extra chaos arrows sculpted on. the WB squad looks really good as well, shame about the blurry pics.

TheGrizz - January 26, 2008 10:04 PM (GMT)
Beautiful work there! Your GS really adds a whole new level of detail to the army. Can't wait to see more!

Dino - January 27, 2008 04:11 AM (GMT)
This is really nice work man. Now a whole army that looks that looks this good will be a nice thing to see when Bob is finished.

MutantMaggot - January 27, 2008 10:37 AM (GMT)
Very good. Good GS work, good painting, excellent hand-painted designs ... nothing at fault whatsoever. :)

You are as clsoe to perfection as a chaotic army can get ... :)

When finished this will truly be amazing.

Also, does the smoke launchers on your Vindi come on the Chaos vehicle accessory sprue?

cheers dude, i was torn between using black templar parts because of all the chains or the DA stuff, the robes won through in the end i think they make them look more fanatical as well as sinister. I'll be writng some fluff about them which i will put up next month.

QUOTE

yh they are from that sprue, 2 me the sprue doesn't have enough spikey stuff on it and the kit didn't include the older spikey bitz sprue :(

i'll b posting the finished marine squad 4 this months BOB tomorrow, jus got the last bits of the dread to do now :D
