Ok some Fluffy Fluff:
88TH Air Calvary
-Multiple unit citations for Heroism in the Face of danger.
The Dingo’s
Unit origins:
For all those who ask the Dingo’s were recruited from some desert planet in a small unknown corner of the vast galaxy. Unit citations include numerous behind enemy lines operations, stealth assassination, supply sabotage and high prize target demolition. The truth about this unit is not so sparkling clean, almost all of the original members were “recruited” from Necromunda, back then they were know to many as the Dingo’s.
Commander Gregor’s story:
For many years the gang earned little pay dirt barely scratching a living off there work, tell one day a stranger came along and wanted to hire some “Strapping young lads”. The job was to be simple, a snatch and grab. Hit a merchant caravan leaving the spire take want they want give the stranger the black crates and get some extra credits, a real milk run.
So the gang set the trap, a couple of charges set beneath the sands, two gangers on the high ground with heavy weapons. The leader “Chief” fancied himself as a master at strategy ordering his gang into cover positions along the track way. As luck would have it, never going your way, an ash storm began whipping about their heads.
Soon after the ash began whipping about chief made out what appeared to be the lead vehicle in the caravan. Waiting for what seemed to be an eternity, the vehicle trudged forward, along to the charge. Chief flipped the switch and hit the deck he took cover. The sound of the explosion was barely heard over the storm, but seemed to dissipate the storm abruptly. Raising a hand to clear his goggles of ash, chief beheld the real vehicle. It became apparent rather quickly that this was no milk run. Standing not 100 paces from him was a main battle tank, a Leman Russ.
At first Chief was not afraid the charges must of stunned the crew. Plus he had two gangs with RPG’s stationed not far from his position a battle tank couldn’t match that for long. Speaking softly into his com. “Füs hit that thing with everything you’ve got.”
“………..” static was all that answered.
“Füs Respond”
“…..”
“Dingo’s sound off!”
“…..” Soon it became apparent that his team must have bolted at the sight of the Leman Russ. Now the scale of this operation went from frying pan to fire, and was degrading fast for behind the Russ was 5 more tanks idling, not battle tanks but smaller transport. As he watched the rear ramps were down guard unit tactical teams were deploying, about 50 plus infantry were disembarking. The troops had the mean look he’d seen in gangers before, veterans of hundreds of battle.
Chief gave up himself to dieing with in moments, then to hear the oddest sound, clapping, not of many but one person. Glancing around the clapping seemed to be coming from behind chief. Feeling sweat drip down his neck he turned every so slowly and beheld a man simple, clothed in ash survival gear.
“That will be all Major” the man called, past chief.
“Are you sure sir?” the question came from the troop commander.
“Yes”
“We have the rest in you chimera as per your order Inquisitor”
As per your order, Inquisitor, the blood drained from Chief’s face. The man standing near him was of His Holy Emperors Inquisition, the Dingo's must have done something to make the inquisition want them eliminated. Dropping his weapons before being asked, before stumping to kneel before his death, too much dignity to beg.
“Well isn’t this a new one?” the inquisitor asked.
Blinking, Chief looked up, “Sir?”
“I came here, to change ships and I find you”
“Sir?”
“You or rather your gang, a highly trained, motivated, defined, combat squad, “smiling the inquisitor taped his com. “Bring up the Chimera”
Soon a transport rumbled forward and stopped next to the Inquisitor, opening the rear door with a flick of his hand the Inquisitor turned to Chief. “I’ll give you and your group two choices. One live out what little life you have left here, and I mean little”
After a long pause Chief gulped, “The Second one?”
“Thought you’d never ask. I need some good men to accompany me and the major to Cilia Prime. Some men that wouldn’t go noticed, some that would answer to me.”
“Sir?”
“I’ve been given a limit on the amount of men I can call upon for this mission,” pausing to scratch his chin the Inquisitor continued “The casualty rate is expected to be severe. My Seniors feel that it would be a vast waste of the guard.”
“In other words, Suicidal”
“Among other things, do this for me and I’ll forget the attack on the troops here. If all goes well there could even be some kind of reward in it.”
Chief thought about it for some time. “Seems it’s a choose between certain death, and not so certain death”
“I’m happy to have you and you’re men along. Now come along, my name is James by the way.” The inquisitor said as he turned to enter the chimera.
“I never said yes.”
“You thought it, Gregor”
The Dingo’s first mission was to help Inquisitor James retrieve an Ordos Xenos data crystal from Cilia Prime. Sounded easy a real milk run, but with all milk runs and the Dingo’s. Planet fall was aboard a MK3 Sky Lifter, AA fire set them 100 kilometer’s off the target landing zone, so they had to hoof it over the “bad” lands into the lab. The mission took three weeks but the Dingo’s did not disappoint Major Thomas or Inquisitor James. In the end, a reward was issued, Inquisitor James appointed the Dingo’s as a “remnant” unit attached to the 88th Drop Forces, a unit that never official exists, under their commanding officer Major Thomas.
Soon after they’re appointment to the guard more men were added to the remnant unit, materials and training became available. Soon Major Thomas and the other guard officers were phased out and the 88th command was giver over to LT Gregor. Most other guard commanders questioned the reasoning of higher echelon commanders, with favorable treatment, and fast tracking of officers. But on further investigation all complaints were dropped officially because there were none just error’s in commander’s judgments, unofficially because the Inquisition told them to.
As it stands the 88TH Drop are station on a single battle cruiser “The Phoenix”. Officially this is a Transport ship for the company, in truth the Phoenix is an Inquisition ship attached to the Ordos of Xeno. Housed on board are over 350 special troopers of the 88th Drop Regiment, 50 orbital landers, 15 Leman Russ battle tanks, 20 Chimera troop transports and 35 close support air craft, including 58th “Wild Cards” Tactical Wing of the Imperial Navy who specialize in close air support.
Currently the Phoenix is at dock in the STYGIES VIII ship yard under going refit. 100 of the 350 88th are on holiday/away from the Phoenix, the other 250 are going through training program for future combat operations.
(this is purely fiction I have no clue about ranks or methods of the Imperial Guard or Inquisition. Also My Grammar and Spelling Sucks so I’m sorry to all who had or are having trouble reading this.)
