LAS VEGAS – Bob Arum is in the International Boxing Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in a more than 40-year career as arguably the sport’s finest promoter. If there were a storyteller’s Hall of Fame, Arum might be the charter member. His life experiences and stories could fill three books.

A few weeks ago, while promoting a pay-per-view card in the Philippines, Arum picked up another tale. He had dinner with Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the island nation, at the Peninsula Hotel in Manila.

And it wasn’t long before conversation turned to the pride of Arum’s boxing stable, Manny Pacquiao.

“She knows all about Manny and how he fights and all the charitable things he does for the people of the Philippines,” Arum said. “We had a lengthy conversation about Manny, what he’s doing now and his future down there.”

On Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Pacquiao will fight Ricky Hatton in the year’s most hotly anticipated match. Among the spectators will be a large number of Filipino congressmen, as well as vice president Noli de Castro.

Because of the large number of congressmen who are making the trip to the fight, the congress will go out of session.

“On Saturday, I think I’ll be the most powerful man in Filipino politics because I control the credentials and who gets to go in the ring,” Arum jokingly said.
