A 4.1 magnitude earthquake that shook part of Western Visayas caused some damage to the ceiling and walls of the New Bacolod-Silay Airport of International Standards in Negros Occidental Saturday morning.
The acoustic boards in the ceiling of the departure and arrival lobby of the airport were skewed and walls in some portions of the airport also cracked due to the strong force of the quake.
Airport Manager Antonio Alfonso said employees who were on-duty when the incident occurred heard a vibrating sound around 2 a.m.
"They said that the airport floor was shaking and swinging for a few seconds," Alfonso said.
The tremor, however, did not affect operations as airport officials said that there was no major damage. There were also no injuries reported.
"This airport is equipped with earthquake sensors that could automatically stop the equipment when an emergency or calamity strikes," said Alfonso.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in Negros Occidental said that the quake was tectonic by origin, that is, caused by underground movement.
Phivolcs recorded an Intensity 6 in Silay, Cadiz and Sagay City in Negros Occidental, Intensity 4 in Bacolod City, Iloilo City and Guimaras Island and Intensity 3 in Murcia, Negros Occidental and Roxas City.
The last reported quake in the area was an Intensity 3 earthquake on July 2007.
