Pacquiao steps up training
By NICK GIONGCO
Manny Pacquiao is about to enter the critical phase of his training for his bout with David Diaz.
"My training is getting harder and harder and in the coming days, the number of rounds of sparring will go up," said Pacquiao from Los Angeles where he has been training for over two weeks now.
His fight against Diaz will be on June 28 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
"Last Monday, I sparred eight rounds and in the next few weeks, the number will go up further. Two weeks before the fight, I will spar 12 rounds in a day," added Pacquiao.
The Filipino fighter has at least four sparmates at the Wild Card Boxing Club three times a week under the supervision of Freddie Roach.
With exactly 30 days before Pacquiao go up the ring to attempt to knock the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight crown off Diaz’s head, tight security will be enforced at the Wild Card soon as fans and even friends of the Filipino fighter will no longer be allowed to get inside while Pacquiao is working out.
This has been the case in most of Pacquiao’s high-profile fights since Roach is wary of videos clandestinely taken during these critical times might end up being smuggled to Diaz’s training camp.
While Pacquiao is going at it like a madman, Diaz is also heavily immersed in training, having been reporting to the JABB Gym in downtown Chicago since April 19.
After this weekend’s promotional tour in the Bay Area where Pacquiao and Diaz will be in attendance, to hype the card dubbed "Lethal Combination", the training of the two southpaws should intensify in the next couple of weeks.
Pacquiao, 29, has declined to make a prediction, while Diaz, 31, has been compelled to say that he won’t allow his belt to be taken away from him.

guys, remember that manny started out in 106 lbs...he will be fighting now at 135 lbs...thats almost a 30 lbs increase...you;re body can only grow so much...
if a light puncher in JMM had given him problems at 130...the question is can he take the punch at 135....
he could be a power puncher at 126... a strong puncher at 130 but it could be that at 135 his punches would not have the same effect as the lower divisions....
I personally think that going to 135 is a wrong move...
There are plenty of opponents at 130 that he could clean up...guzman..valero...
the best example is DelaHoya at 154... he could have destroyed felix sturm at 147 but he could not even dent the armor of sturm at 154....
hope i am wrong...but i think manny could have bitten more than he could chew,,,
iceman - June 16, 2008 02:34 PM (GMT)
slim chance that he would be successful... imho... i say wrong move but hell, that is just me...
espatepeppen - June 16, 2008 06:09 PM (GMT)
kun hindi sya mag over-eat after sa weigh-in, dako ang chance na madaug si MP.
sang pag hampang nila ni JMM, si MP blew up to 144 lbs according to Quinito Henson.
130 -> 144 lbs??? :chuck:
bolitski - June 17, 2008 06:50 AM (GMT)
most fighter grew heavier significantly on fight day..that's why they announce the the weigh in weight...not the fight day weight....
i just do hope that manny's power will carry to 135lbs..

Round three; Pacman is impressive against southpaw Diaz. Pacquiao is testing Diaz's chin. Action is amazing, but Diaz can't compete speed wise. Manny is in high gear, takes some body shots from Diaz by comes back with a right hook and follows up with an upper cut. Beautiful action from Pacquiao. Diaz is making a fight, but Pacquiao is beating him to the punches. Ref is having an easy night. Pacquiao using upper cuts well tonight and Diaz's courage is impressive. Pacquiao making a fight of it and Diaz keeps coming forward....both throwing at the same time, but Pacman's punches are waaaaay faster!
10-9 Pacman.

Pacman works the body, Diaz covers up and fires back, but to no real avail. Diaz has guts..... and i mean GUTS! 10 - 9 Pacman.
Round 8: Pacman is relentless and comes out hard this round. Diaz is working and bobbing but Pacman speeds his combinations to the point he looks blury when throwing punches. Pacman is just that fast. Diaz ia in excellent condition, but he is only taking punishment. Diaz is fighting back but looking sloopy and finds his back touching the ropes often. Pacman is just having and easy night, gets diaz on the ropes with a minute left and unloads in Diaz. Diaz makes it off the ropes...his hands are by his wait side and looking heavy. His mouth is open. Pacman is unloading and the punishment is getting scary. Diaz is too brave for his own good.
10-9 Pacman.
Round 9: Pacman looks fresh, the same can not be said of Diaz. Pacman circles Diaz and lands jabs. Diaz is blocking and Pacman is punching and landing. We are talking power shots more often then not. Diaz finds his jab momentarily, but a straight left from Pacquiao shows Diaz`s head snap back. Looks nasty...Pacman is just too dominating. A jab followed by a left hand right on the chin....Diaz didn`t see it and with 39 seconds left Diaz goes down! Down Hard! Ref finally calls off the bout. Manny wins by KNOCK OUT with 39 seconds left in the round!
Pacman is celebrating and Diaz is still on his back looking upwards. Diaz finally gets up. What a warrior...what heart...but Manny was too hot and too hard to control.
Micheal Buffer comes out to make the official announcement. Pacquiao wins at 2:24 of Round 9 by KO to win the WBC belt from Diaz.

Daog si Manny by unanimous decision. The judges cannot decide for Diaz anymore because he was asleep already. So they gave the title to Manny. :D

With a championship belt in his fourth weight class and a landmark victory in his fifth division, Pacquiao showed he’s only getting better as he gets bigger. The next few years will determine just how big he can get as he embarks on what’s sure to be an eventful tour of the talented lightweight division— with perhaps an incredibly lucrative side trip to junior welterweight for a fight against Ricky Hatton.
