Title: Help
Description: Pyrs Hind End/Legs

ragdoll - October 23, 2007 06:11 PM (GMT)
Hi!
I have not been here in some time. Something always comes up.

Anyway, my Pyr is now 8 mos old and I have noticed that when he has been laying down on the floor he swilves his rear to get his legs in postion to get up. This has not been going on too long but I am concerned.

He does have a big rear and I wonder if this has anything to do with him getting up. I have seen other Pyrs with the same shape rear too.

He is active in his backyard, loves to play in the house and he does not limp or anything. He has a good appetite too.

Could there be something wrong with him? Should I have his hips x-rayed? I love Japser to pieces and I hope there is nothing wrong with him.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Debbie

Hi my Nevilles just coming up for 6 mths old and he does a similar thing when getting up.
A few people here have said that they seem to grow in stages ie: Big back end, then the front catches up etc.
I think also you have to remember there a big heavey dog, neville weighed approx 35kg at the vets..I say approx cause I dont know for sure all 4 feet were on the scales
Anyway due to there size there not able to jump up like a collie etc and there leg muscles/joints etc are still growing.

Jaspers prob just doing it the easiest way he can to get all his weight off the floor.

I'm sure once Lurchergirl or pyreelover get here they'll be able to answer you better, but for now I wouldnt worry too much as nevilles a big lumpy dope when he gets up too.

Rob :)

Pyr's do have big rear ends which can make them look a bit awkward getting up from a lying down position , but if you are worried at all maybe a trip to a chiropractor could help put your mind at ease as opposed to going to get xrays done at the vets as our Pyr's can be a bit sensitive to anesthetics as i am sure you know :D

I had to have Akira xrayed at just over a year old and unfortunately it showed she has hip dysplacia ( i still cant spell that properly oops ) Storm had a few problems with what i thought was his back end but the vet did blood and other tests but rather than put him under anesthetics i went to see a Mc Timoney Chiropractor who was fantastic and was able to see where Storms problems were , a few of his vertibrate in his neck were out of alignment and his spine and head had a few twists in them , the poor boy had been getting headaches and after a few visits was soon back to normal and a lot happier in himself .

I think Vets are very much like our GP's not specialized in anything specific , so for any kind of joint problems i would advice seeing a Chiropractor in the first instance , as my vet had not picked up on any of Storms problems and said he was fine and she was reluctant to put him under him under anesthetics, I just knew there was something wrong by the way he was behaving he was a wee bit less tolerant of Akira and a bit grumpy with her .

Maybe your boy is just at the gangly awkward stage and if he is happy enough to play and still eating well maybe there is nothing to worry about but it might just put your mind at rest to have him checked out anyway ?

Hope that helps a wee bit

Can't add anything else to Fiona's post... Troy has also had quite a lot of chiro treatment for his backend (which is totally sound now) and his shoulders. So far, we have managed to keep him off pain killers... but then he is already 8 years old, so his joints are a bit more creeky I guess... :)

Thank you so much for your help.

I do keep an eye on Jasper and he is not lame in anyway and does really play alot. I had only caught his swiveling when he had been laying down for a bit.

If I had to take him in to see a chiropractor, I don't even know where I would go or how to begin to look for one. Can anyone direct me?

I do not trust the vet he did have so I changed to another one at the same facility. His previos vet saw him for his first visit and told me he has fleas. Well, his way of telling me was, he "thinks" he picked one off Jasper and flung it to the other side of the room. Jeez, you don't fling fleas!! That was just a way of getting more money out of me. So his vet now is a woman, very knowledgeable. She even helped me with my Charlie who I lost this past April due to a tumor in his tummy. She knew right away what was wrong whereas the other vet didn't. It ended up that Charlie could not breathe since the tumor was blocking his airways and pushing his intestines to his rear. He hung on and on. Smart dog he was. He would have been 14 years old, black lab mix.

I am still going to try to get my Jasper's pictures in here. I cannot believe how big he is at 8 months old. Rear and all!!!

Thank you again,
Debbie

Hi, My Bernese has a chiropractor. I rang his breeder and she suggested one she used. I rang her and got a number of someone much closer to me. Sorted my boy out.
