Charlie is in the "shizz" now as some may call it. Because his lunging at other dogs has returned full force my dad phoned the lady that made him happen lol. She said she'd come up here to assess him and if he's too bad take him to where she lives for two weeks. Awww! That's the price he pays for being a little sod lol.

Awww poor Charlie , he is probably just desperate to say hello to other dogs , I know when Storm first came here he would lunge and bark at other dogs and it gave such a bad impression of him to other people , but with a lot of hard work and consistancy i mananged to stop him doing it most of the time .

When Charlie does this , can i ask what your dad does?

I have been thinking a lot about about Charlie over the weekend i hope he does not have to go back to the breeder for a few weeks , he will wonder where you all are and worry about his wee flock :(

Personally i could not send either of my dogs away for any length of time as i would worry my self sick over them one of my major worries would be the way he was being treated , no disrespect to the breeder as i am sure they have vast experience with Pyr's in general but Charlie is your dog and you know him best , you have to live with him so you need to deal with his problems and i know its tough when you have tried everything and you dont see any improvement but he needs to work for you not the breeder , please ask your dad to reconsider sending him away , Vera is a bahaviourist and trainer and she understand Pyr's really well can you maybe ask your dad to contact her for a chat about things or to post in this section ? I know without seeing Charlie it can be difficult to see where the prolems are but i have found her advice sound and really helpful with Storm and Akira .

I hope things get better for you all without having to take such a drastic step .

Hi Charlie,

have you tried a gentle leader. Its been fantastic with JD and makes it virtually impossible for her to lunge.

I can undertsand your fears about the breeder, I don't think I'd like to send JD away (although see was fine being in kennels for a weekend) she loved being with the other dogs. Briony (the breeder) is also a proffessional behavioural dog trainer, AMACC, APDT, DIP, CABTand specialisers in Pyries and Bernards. She has about 12 Pyries and 2 Bernards and lives in the country with big fields for the dogs to play in. She is also obsessed with her pups wellbeing so I'm sure no harm will to him. But hopefully it won't get that far and you can sort it.

How's his sock pinching gene :) . JD's is still rampant.

The point i was trying to make is that no matter who helps out at the end of the day its Charlies family that have to learn how to handle and control him , sending him away for 2 weeks to anyone is fair enough he might learn something but the family wont :(

All the training classes i know of are not just there to train the dogs its very much a case of training the handlers to handle their dogs as much as anything .

I always use Gentle leaders with my dogs as i have said before in a similar thread about Charlie but they only work as a training aid they dont replace training , i am not a big fan of halti's either as i used one for Taz and it rode up into his eyes so i stopped .

At the end of the day we can only try and help by saying what works for our dogs , every dog is different but they all need consistant gentle but firm handeling and ongoing training

How's Charlie - is he any better these days

Charlie these days... grim lol. He's a grouchy bugger. We never got around to arragning for her to come here or us to go there. There's been a few problems with some family. ANYWAY, back on topic, he's began to jump up at people, not visciously, jst excitedly. However, there's no pattern to it, sometimes he will, sometimes he won't. Which means going for a walk has me on edge in case he terrifies some old pensioner. Oh well, could be worse, he could do it visciously- then in the heads of the people being jumped at, there's probably very little difference.
