Title: Walkies
Description: How far

alanelf - September 27, 2006 04:12 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone I have a question Im sure someone will be able to help me with.
Daz is almost 13 weeks old and has increased energy levels and is ready for walkies Daz has had all injections, identachip, and ready for the outside world.I have heard that only short walks until 6 months old and to not let him climb stairs etc.Could someone tell me how short a walk is safe as i dont want to do him an injury by overdoing it. i have been socializing him by carring him to the school approx 0.3 of a mile away every morning (but hes getting bit heavy now) and EVERYBODY gives him loves is this to far to walk and back for his age?.

Hi Alan,

I stopped being able to pick JD up at 13 weeks old. I would of thought that dstance would be ok as long as you build it up slowly. Carry him some of the way at first. I dont think the walking is too bad as long as you take it steady and not too far it the stairs and hills and bouncy play that can cause trouble.

JD always told me when she had haf enough. She'd sit down and not budge. |I still haven't got over the "celebrity" status you get when you walk a Pyrenean. I wish I had a pound for everyone that says "hey look, that woman's walking a Polar Bear!"

How are you getting on with training. Is he being good.

Hi Gaynor training is going really well around the house he has learnt to sit and stay.It took him a few hours not wanting the collar on and tried biting the lead which soon stopped and he accepts that he has to wear it now.Around the house if he is told bed he retreats to under the stairs where his bed is which is a must with 4 kids around.Chewing isnt a problem as of yet we have purchased a lot of Kong toys, chewies, ropes, etc and that seems to keep him occupied. We are in the process of trying to leave him alone for short periods (1hr most)seems to be going ok a neighbour did say he heard him crying for about 5 mins then stopped so when we opened the front door we saw he was asleep in his bed he awoke ran at us and we gave him cuddles and a tripe stick which he really really loves so I hope im doing the right thing there. He barked the other night and actually scared himself he has only barked that once but im not complaining. So i guess training is a joy at the moment hardest part is the recall he does it in the house no problem few more distractions outside though(like dead leaves blowing about).Going to try letting him walk to the school in the morning he loves it over there cuddles and more cuddles he gets from everyone so going to show people that Daz can actually walk tomorrow will let you all know how it goes

Took Daz for a walk to the school this morning we stopped at every lampost every crack in the pavement we did eventually get to the school where he got his cuddles from everyone when we got home he went straight to sleep and even now he is still asleep i think i need to leave an extra 20 mins before i usually do as he is curious about everything.Tomorrow were taking Daz to a friends house who has a few friends around who have puppies ranging from 8 weeks to 6 months we have been invited but have a bit of a concern about Daz at the moment and not sure weather i should take him im not to worried but if someone could give me advice it would be good.I will post it in the Health and diet column as it is more suitable to that subject than here.

Puppy parties are definitely a fantastic idea and you should attend. Perhaps even find a puppy class as well! I would however first let your vet have a look at Daz to make sure that his skin/coat is fine as discussed in the other thread. :)

Hi everyone
We took Daz to our friends puppy party today it went really well he mixed in like he already new them.Daz was the biggest pup there as others are mainly smaller breeds except a turner and hooch pup which was 6 months old and Daz fell in love with her straight away it was so nice to see him mingle in so well and we will be going again on tuesday as a regular thing.Whilst we were there it wasnt all plain sailing Daz deceided to bring me the water bowl complete with water still in it not sure why but spent 10 mins mopping the floor everyone fell in love with him as he did it in such style still suprised when he gets excited he doesn`t bark. Our first mishap with Daz today when we got home my youngest child didnt close the fridge when he got a drink of milk and Daz ate the cheese, ham and garlic sausage all we knew was when he came in with one of the empty wrapper in his mouth he hasnt eaten his tea tonight (ate ours instead)but he seems happy.
