I bought a clicker today! So as to start trying to train Charlie through clicker training. Not having a clue how it worked I looked in the booklet just now and to my HORROR (hahaha) it only talks about clicking and rewarding with a food treat. He doesn't like them. His currency tends to be chicken but even then he isn't always willing to accept it as a treat. He's much more attention motivated. If he sits he'd ignore the treat, but sit there all day re-sitting if you give him a good stroke or grab his mane and... shake it lol. S
SO I suppose my question is... can clicker training work with the reward being attention in th way of stroking or is it only really effective with food-based rewards??? Before I go possibly wasting my time lol.
Thanks!
Reward based training will only work when you find out what your dog thinks is worth working for , so if using a nice cuddle or ruffle of your boys fur works for you and him then i would say go for it , not all dogs are food orientated so you just go with what works for the individual dog :D

Why thank you very much. I made a SHOCKING discovery, my younger sister, not really getting the jist that Charlie already understands sit told him to sit, he did it, she clicked and offered him a treat and he ATE IT! Which really is rare. So I'm thinking he might have been clicker trained when he was a wee man, instead of a not-so-wee man lol.
He still prefers a good tickle or stroke or whatever it is we do though.
Thank you again.
Jay.
