Title: That's why Troy can't be off lead...

We went to a local park tonight where there is a children's playground which is fully fenced. I hadn't been there for a while as the fencing needed repairing, but it appears that this has all been done now.

So I let Troy off the lead (it was dark, no-one around) and he loved running about. However, when he goes off, I know why he is not off lead in public other than in fully fenced areas... he just runs off to the other end of the grounds without a look back, and you get this feeling of having absolutely no control of the situation... :o When you call he will come back eventually, but all in his own time unless he is just a few yards away when I call him!

Never mind, he had a good run, Dylan joined in and Troy was happy.

I will start going to that park regularly again in the mornings before work now that I know that the fencing is repaired again! That'll give Troy some much needed off lead exercise.

Vera

PS. He managed to eat something disgusting whilst in there - probably fox poo or something. His breath nearly knocked me out...

Awww thats great Vera i'm glad they had some fun it is lovely to see our Pyr's getting a run around , but i know exactly how you feel about not having control , like Troy if Akira is in front of me only a few steps away she will come back but if she is at the other end of an enclosed space she just won't do it either.

I found a fully fenced off area recently as well and Akira loves it , it is nice to see her off lead and roaming around free :D Does Troy patrol the perimiter fence as well? I have noticed with Akira when ever we go anywhere she has to go right around the outside edge of the room/area sniffing every nook and cranny before she will have a run around , i am not sure if she is checking the boundries staking her territory out or just looking for an escape route ? :D :D :D

Yes, he does. When let off the lead at one end of the fenced area, he will run off at top speed (which is very fast for such a big dog) along the fence right to the other end, have a good sniff around, then come back along the fence on the other side... It is quite fascinating to watch how they patrol the area and you can just imagine all the (non existing) sheep in there feeling quite safe...

  Awww bless him , Akira does'nt know how to run yet i am sure , either that or she is just too lazy she rarely runs anywhere just sort of trots around even when theres another dog to play with she seems to enjoy sauntering along slowly, the only time she really runs is if i run with her and you better believe thats still not very fast

Or of course when shes running away from me if she thinks shes gtting freedom

i'm moving later in the year so a pre-requisite of the area is gonna be a safe place to let them off-lead!
i have a question tho Fiona
you said when Akira plays with other dogs is she let off lead? if there is someone to play with do pys tend to stay closer? (not relying on faeth to round rohan up!! she has her own "long way round" style of recall!!)

Hi Shona Akira is only off lead in a secure area even with other dogs as she is far to independant and has no run with the pack instinct at all , she has only been off lead a handful of times in an unsecured area because of this , on the few occasions she has been off lead there has allways been other dogs there and she will stay close for a wee while but then you see "the look" and you know shes off and theres nothing you can do about it , luckily on the few occasions this has happened Taz either brought her back or she ran up to somebody to say hello and they took hold of her for me :o

She is just a typical Pyr Shona and i am sure you will find out about " the look " soon with Rohan

edited to add , When she was offlead and done a runner she was much smaller and easier to stop , now she is only allowed off lead in a secure fenced off area
