kittania - April 10, 2006 08:50 AM (GMT)
Hi everyone, seems Jake has settled in fine, had a great night sleep with him last night all tho he snores worse than an old man :D
Today i have noticed he seems to be putting me through a test to see if he can rule the house, since getting up he has been trying his luck with my daughter and i have been shouting no everytime and he has been walking away :P but this mornings wee wee's didnt go to well, he just stood in the door way and looked at me as if to say Nar i dont want to, i didnt give up and in the end he finally went, at the moment he is in the kitchen as thats where he will be staying when i go out, its is a big glass door so he can see through and see us but i have just been stood at the kitchen for 15 mins asking him to lay down :P he is deffo a dog with his own mind ill give him that :o

How's things going with him? Vera

Things are going good thanks. he is an excellent guard dog and growls at any1 even walking past the house.
My only concern is his eating, the food she gave me he didnt touch for 2 days so i mixed some Alpha in it with gravy and he yummed it all up but tonight he hasnt even touched it again but if im making somthing for myself he is wanting whatever im eating. I dont feed him from my plate but my daughter is sneaking him food, which he will happily accept :o walking him is bit hard aswell as the lady said he walks well on a lead well he cut all my hand open yesterday from pulling me so hard i tried to grab hold of somthing for support and caught my hand on somthing sharp :( he has decided the sofa is his bed and once he is on there is no way of getting him off and trust me i have tried everything but he just closes his eyes and starts snoring lol
But yeah he is great and i have no regrets about him at all, he is excellent company aswell :D

:D I would not worry too much about him not eating much at the moment , Pyr's all seem to go through fazes where they just dont seem to want to eat , well all except Storm who is a real greedy guts   I made the mistake with Akira of adding tit bits to her dinner to encourage her to eat when we lost Taz and all it did was make her a fussy little madam , so i had to stop that now i put her dinner down and if she does not eat it in 10 minutes i lift it and this seems to have cut down on her being quite so fussy , but sometimes she does not eat and i dont worry too much about it if she skips a meal :D
Regarding walking him have you thought about trying a head collar ? I use Gentle leaders with both Akira and Storm as theres no way i could have full control over them if i did'nt , head collars makes my life so much easier as they cant really pull when you have control of their heads :D
He sounds like he is settling in well and it can be hard getting a sleeping Pyr off the sofa but in saying that i will say he needs to learn that you are in charge not him , so please dont ask him to get off unless you know he will as all that will do is teach him that it is ok to ignore you ;)
Storm tried his luck with me with the sofa once he had been here for a while , i found the best way of getting him off was to throw a yummy treat accross the floor and as soon as he moved i said the word "off" and praised him for being a good boy , after a while when i said "off" he did start getting off and looking for a treat , i sometimes have to laugh at just how intelligent and stubborn our Pyr's are but i don't let them get the upper hand as i know once they have that the balance of control would shift too much in their favour :D

Thanks for that advice, i have been and brought him a face collar so hopefully that will help. I tried the trowing a treat across the floor but he really isnt interested in treats as he was never given them before and he acts like he is doing somthing wrong by accepting them all tho i praise him and let him know im giving him a treat as a reward for his behaviour :)
He is a dog with his own mind but i feel safe around him as the slightest noise and he barks for england, neighbour didnt seem to impressed the other day when i saw her but its just me and my daughter living here so its nice to know when someone is around but he does like the sound of his own voice :D
He will be goin to the vets soon as i have noticed somthing wrong with his paw, we went for a walk on saturday and afterwards he kept nibbeling the bottom of paw, i tried looking but he was having none of it but i have since seen some pink under there, he aint licking it so much so he might of made it sore from nibbling but best to get it checked out.

Hopefully the head collar will help you to be able to hold on to him better :D As for treats i am sure in time he will learn to love them and see them as a reward , when Storm first came here he would not take treats either for a few days but he soon came round , but then he is a greedy so and so
Pyr's all love the sound of their own voice i am sure my 2 bark at a blade of grass moving a few miles away or just for the fun of it half the time
I am on my own with my kids too and i know what you mean about feeling safe with Jake in the house , somebody would either have to be very brave or very stupid to try and come uninvited into our houses and face a full grown Pyr , they are natural guardians of their own wee flock :D

LOL thanks im just giggleing at him now, he is in the garden barking a a brush that fell over.
hopefully the walk will go ok with him, ill post and let ya know how the face collar works, my mam has one for her akitia, as she is not good with other dogs and thats seems to work with her but Jake is ALOT bigger lol. Its weird coz i went round my mams the other day and one of her huskies walked up to me and i was like oh my god how small is she :D
