could anyone offer advice on how often i should bath my pyrs the other thing is what is recomended to use for them i was told to use a conditioner on their coats to help prevent matting is this right? i like to make sure they are clean and well groomed with their fur being so long!! polar seems to be shedding his fur alot i dont know if its because he used to be kept outdoors before he came to us now he is indoors :)

I only bathed Akira as a baby and have not done so as an adult i did send her off to the groomers for a bath and a good brush but they cut her beautiful hair so i swore never again  I find with regular brushing neither Akira or Storm need to have a bath , their coats really do seem to be self cleaning they can go outside and roll around in mud and a wee while later the mud drops off and they are nice and clean again :D Neither of them smell bad but i think if they did i would be tempted to take them outside with a garden hose rather than try to get them in the bath
Not much help really am i?
As for shedding their hair my two seem to be forever blowing their coats , i think it must have somethng to do with living in a heated house

Troy is six years old and we have had him for four years... and he has never had a bath whilst in our care. And yet, people commend on how white and clean he is and that he doesn't smell... So unless your dogs roll in something horrible or there is a particular reason for a bath, I wouldn't bother! Vera

is it bad for them to have regular baths?

I don't like giving any dog too many bath as it disturbes their natural balance re oils in/on the skin etc. However, with the pyreneans, my main issue is that I don't WANT to bathe them... too much fur, it would take ages to wash and dry! No thanks! Not if I don't have to...

Troy gets very muddy too in wet weather, but we have got good carpets in the house and a good carpet cleaning machine... so Troy is self-cleaning - although the carpets are not... :P
Oh, and don't worry about lots of questions... that's what this forum was set up for!

Your right this is a great board and if you think your bad you should check back some of my posts asking advice
It's just as well Vera has the patience of a saint all the questions i have fired at her since i joined the board :D
It is great knowing people really understand your Pyr when you ask for advice as i have had some really strange comments from people who tend to generalize about all dogs and their behaviour without knowing anythng about Pyr's .
I have laminate floors too , but both Akira and Storm seem to self clean which is great , when Akira was a puppy she had a lovely white coat now she seems to be more creamy coloured with lots of black hairs through her coat so she always looks minging next to Storm

I am doing JD every couple of weeks as she keeps weeing on her fur and she gets a bit wiffy.
Its be ok up to now. She loves being hair dryed. Mostly falls asleep when I do it but it does take a good hour. Hubby gets all jealous and says I dont pay that much attention on him and starts pulling faces at her.
But i dont think I'll be able to lift her it the bath much longer.

In the summer we got Charlie his own paddling pool (my mum was still getting over the fact we had a dog and didn't want the little gremlin near the bath, but she loves him really, bought him carrots when he wasn't feeling great...). That was fun. Pyrenenas look so funny when soaked through... all skinny and pathetic looking *awwwww*.
Theres a man who comes around in a big van and has a jacuzzi, as my silly father calls it, in it. He baths the dog, sprays him with this strawberry smelling stuff then hands him back soaking. He took well to it. Only washed him three times since we got him. Once being in the van before christmas because he smelt like... dog.
One thing smelly is scared of is things with a motor in, that makes a *buzzz* noise. He hates the hirdryer, even when its not being used on him, even if I make that noise he runs out and hides in his kennle for hours. Just for the record, he doesn't sleep in his kennle, we just spent ages making it for fun <_<
We don't bath him much anyway. I won't let my dad get it done too much. I've heard its bad. I refer the satisfaction of sacrificing a night a week to giving him a good brush for six hours as well as his little brushes.

Luckily Akira never smells bad at all and she is nearly 2 i find brushing her removes any tangles and dirt underneath , she is not keen on us going anywhere near her "bits" and it can be awkward to get her to lie still long enough , but i found a few baby wipes tend to get rid of any sticky bits followed up with a good brush and shes fine ;)
We all want our puppies to be nice and clean and looking good but as Vera said upsetting the natural balance of oils etc in their coats is not really good for them , add into the mix the fact that soon you wont be able to get her in the bath unless she wants o go in , it might be worth trying some baby wipes around her bits and a good comb out and i am sure you will find that works just as well as bathing her :D
