hi i wonder if anyone could help i have a male pyrenean called polar and he is very strong!!! i have been using a choke chain on him as its the only thing that controls him the problem is its causing him to lose his fur around his neck if anyone can suggest an alternative collar typei would be grateful :) :)

We used to use a rolled leather collar, but Troy snapped it... although it was I guess not the best quality one.

We now have a 1" martingale collar on him and this is great. The fur is ok and it is very strong.

I would never use a choke chain (or use a leather one as a choker) on any dog!

We are getting a harness for Troy though as it is kinder for the dog and they are easier to control.

I use the wider Martingale collers on Akira and Storm but i also use a Gentle Leader clipped to their collars as theres no way i could walk them both at the same time without them , I tried all kinds of harnesses with Akira and i found she could still pull with most of them , the only one that seemed to work ok was the Kumfi Stop Pull harness , when her training came on and she stopped pulling i got Storm so switched to gentle leaders for them both as i knew there was no way i could handle him in a harness at all and it took me a wee while to work with them with the head collars but once i got the hang of it i have had no problems controlling him even if he kicks off at another dog , people sometimes comment about how somebody as small as i am can control such a large dog , i'm only 5ft 3 and i suppose it must be quite comical to watch me holding hium while he rears up on his back legs and shouts his mouth off

Luckily these incidents are few and far between these days but he still does it on the odd occation and i like knowing that i can hold him with very little effort as i am not really very strong and he weighs more than i do

Hope this link works Anna makes beautiful collars and matching leads and all the money goes to Greyhound Gap :D

I am sure other people will soon be along to give you some more ideas , when Storm first came to me he was wearing a half check collar and under his chin was all marked with the chain ;)

This is where I get my collars from: Northwind Designs She also has her own website: Northwind Website
The collars are nice and strong and fantastic designs. She is in the States though.

PS. Whatever collar you are going to put on him, he will not stop pulling without actual training. But if you find it difficult to control him, you might want to consider a head collar. When I walk Troy and Dylan together for example, Troy wears a Dogmatic Headcollar: Dogmatic Headcollar We have the original leather one.

I recommend a Halti Head Collar for a dog that pulls. It was fantastic for my rescue dog Benson who had no concept of lead walking.

Halti

I tried the harness version with JD and it was a complete nightmare though. She refused to walk with it on. JD is not bad on a lead though so have resorted to a normal collar and training lead, with lots of start stops. Everytime she pulls on the lead I stop still, so she is learning that its not productive to pull. Slow going but seems to be working. People keep telling me to persevere with it.

They are available in most pet shops.

Thinking of trying a gentle leader, what size do you use.

Gaynor , for Akira i use a Medium for Storm XL there is so much difference in their size ;)

Might be best if you take your gorgeous baby to the pet shop for a fitting after all , most girlies  shopping :D
