We left Noah on his own last night! We have a large shop building with a good size office cats roam the shop and come and go freely. We thought the office would be a great place for Noah to start learning to be on his own...........wrong!
We thought we had puppy proofed the office put everything he might be interested in up, layed out his bed, food , water, supply of toys and chew bones, even turned on the radio for him and left a cat for company. Well, this morning my husband is cleaning the mess........Noah chewed up books off the shelves, ripped the phone out of the wall got hold of the computer keyboard and we really can't tell what else yet! (Nothing he could have been hurt with) Noah has roamed free in the house with the poodles and never touched anything that was not his to play with......Was this boredom? I think he was angry at being left in the shop........I think he felt left out!
Pyreneans don't like being left on their own. Our Troy won't destroy things, but he will bark non-stop if he is completely on his own (without the other dogs).
You would have to get Noah used to being on his own slowly. At first, just walk out the door, close it and go straight back in. Then slowly, slowly extend the period of being alone.
Please don't think that Noah did this because he was angry. Dogs don't think like that. He was very anxious and worried... and one possible outlet of this stress is chewing things! If you get him used to it gradually, he will settle and be more comfortable on his own.
You may also want to try a DAP diffuser (available from vets or on-line) for him. Worked wonders with Troy and his stress levels! :)
Thank you for the reply......I have a DAP I purchased for the poodles when they were young, I will give it a try with Noah! Noah has done very well thus far with his socializing and training. He is guarded with new people but not timid and he is housebroken himself and will bark to go outside and do his business. His recall off leash is not very good but we are working with treats and the leash to express what we are asking him to do........Noah will come and sit in front of us most times but he is easily distracted I guess from what I have been reading this is just a GP trait we will have to get used to! Bouvier is a very hard headed dog also although the recall was alittle better. We are really falling in love with this breed and I can forgive not always being able to get him to come when I call there are so many other qualities and who could resist those big brown eyes ;)
