trish59 - January 23, 2006 07:54 PM (GMT)
Hello everybody I have never posted before and am delighted to find a board for my beloved py he just wont eat he looked very depressed for two days he seems to have bucked up again but still will not eat, he drinks normally but I am really concerned. reading other postings it seems this is not uncommon but I would appreciate any advice while I try and figure out how to post a picture of him he's only 15 months and before he came to live with us he had abit of a hard time, and I would hate to think he's unhappy.

Nice to meet you :D Have you had Bobo checked out by your vet? If you have and theres nothing physically wrong he might just be being a typical picky Pyr :D How long have you had him? whats his normal diet? has he gone off his food before? is he quite fussy or will he usually eat anything? sorry for firing questions at you but it might help if we get a rough idea of his usual eating habits :D
I have 2 Pyrs and Storm my rescue boy will eat anything and is quite a greedy guts , while madam Akira used to be quite fussy thankfully she seems to have grown out of it but i know how worrying it can be for us they dont seem to come to any harm not eating but we still worry dont we ?

Hi and welcome. Lovely to have you here.
Yes, a trip to the vet would be on order if you are worried and this is unusual for him. Our pyrenees used to skip meals frequently or not eat up. Since he has seen a chiropractor though and he is more comfortable, he very rarely skips meals now! So I am wondering whether Bobo is stressed about anything? Has anything changed in his environment (building works going on, new people about, change of routine etc.).

Hi and thanks for your feedback my 13 year old son went away for the weekend and as soon as he came back BoBo wanted to eat, sensitive doggy, Having read some other postings I decided a bowl of rice pudding worth a try he cleaned the bowl in seconds and proceeded to gulp down the poor cats food (one mouthful) as well he seems ok now.
I have only had him since late last year and though he settled well initially I have a lot to learn about py character's he is a very special boy who had a bit of a hard time before I got him.
I am going to the vet this week to get him checked over just in case there are any underlying problems but he seems his usual self again
I would appreciate some feeding tips as I am not sure whats best to feed him what he wants! (my dinner) or what he needs! big dog not eating is too scary for me
funny thing I have had dogs all my life and met some real characters but BoBo is
a real challenge and I just want him to be happy
thanks again in anticipation

Awww he sounds lovely :D As for feeding i think it depends on if you want him to be on a complete diet or if you want him to have meat etc everyone has different views and opinions on whats the best way of feeding our dogs .
There are some good low protien complete foods around eg csj , burns james well beloved etc I feed Akira a natural diet of meat either frozen or fresh , veggies , tripe , oily fish , an egg occasionally ,cottage cheese , natural yoghurt , rice pasta etc but i could not get the balance right for Storm as he is on a diet so he gets Dr Johns Silver complete food with some meat and veggies mixed in so i can monitor the amounts as we go along and so far his diet is going well , when he has lost weight i will look back at changing him back to more natural feeding . Both of mine love a nice raw marrow bone as well which is great for cleaning their teeth :D
I also give both of mine supplements to help their joints etc Glucosamine , evening primrose oil , omega fish oils

All of ours are on CSJ. Troy is on CSJ CP18, which is a complete dry food. The advantage of this one is that it is low in protein, no artificial additives and it contains glucosamine, chondroiting and MSM... an advantage for big breeds.

Thank you all very much , he seems to be fussy and we will have to try every thing until we get it right.
