Title: Weight ?

Pyreelover - May 10, 2005 08:24 AM (GMT)
I am a bit concerned about Storms weight even though i dont know what weight he is he is too big to fit on the scales at the vets apparently i have to take Akira to get weighed this week so i will try and get him weighed at the same time.

As you will have noticed he is a lot bigger than Akira not just in height but in body size too and i know male Pyr's are obviously bigger built but he just seems to be so slow and lumbers everywhere as opposed to walking maybe i am just being a bit paranoid but Akira looks so wee and skinny next to him it has made me wonder if he is just a bit overweight ? He is getting fed twice a day now with fresh meat , veggies a small amount of Dr Johns Gold , rice , pasta etc and i just think maybe he could do with losing a bit of weight , just out of intrest what do your Pyr's weigh as adults? Akira is around 45 kilos now but Storm must be a good bit over that and i am worried about the strain it must be putting on his joints etc

Troy was 48kg when we got him and that was really skinny. Now he is around 60kg, but you can still feel the ribs very well underneath his coat! It is his perfect weight. Can you feel Storm's ribs well? Pyreneans tend to be (and should be) quite skinny underneath all that fur, you should certainly be able to feel the ribs properly.

No i can't really feel his ribs Vera so i think he will have to go on a bit of a diet no more snowballs for him

Poor Troy thats about Akiras weight and she is still quite wee well she looks wee now beside Storm anyway

I have been giving him some glucosamine for his joints just in case as well , i was wondering what the difference is between that for dogs and for humans?

LurcherGirl - May 10, 2005 02:54 PM (GMT)
I think most of the weight that Troy put on was actually muscle weight as he was not lethargic or anything (he was very ill a couple of months after we had him, but I don't think his initial weight was related to that...) and it never occured to us that he was skinny (it was totally different when he was ill). So it must have been mainly muscle weight!

Vera

PS. I don't think there is a difference between human and doggie glucosamine... but I am no expert...

Being a girlie, Izzy is going to weigh less than the boys but she varies between 45kgs and 48kgs. She is classed as a large female pyr.

When she sits "properly" she looks huge around the hips (same as her mummy  ) but when you stroke her tummy and chest you can feel her ribs. Its quite strange to be able to feel them, because they look so bulky.

When she's at home she does just amble everywhere and does seem lathargic, but she can "go" when something is not quite right in the garden!

When we're out and hubby takes her running - still on her lead, she has the most beautiful running action and can match Hun for speed although not distance but if just walking, she can outwalk all of us.

Dont forget that Storm may be carrying his winter weight. Izzy seems to do this and then when it gets hot and she doesnt eat as well, she generally drops down by a few kilos. See how he is during the summer, you may not need to reduce his diet at all.

BTW I give mine Cod Liver Oil for their bones - human ones.

Pyreelover - May 11, 2005 08:23 AM (GMT)
Thanks for your replies, i think i am so used to Akira bouncing around that beside her Storm looks like a huge lion plodding around, I think he could be slightly over weight i am hoping i can get him on the scales at the vets but i am not sure he will fit

My dogs get human cod liver oil as well as evening primrose oil i just was'nt sure about the glucosamine but i think i will have another look at the labels today i still have some doggy ones left but not many so i think i will take the pack along to the health shop and see what the comparison is like :D

Just been to the vets with the doggies and got a shock and a half Akira had lost some weight but her weight is back up to 42 kilos , Storm did not want to get on the scales but we managed to get him on eventually and he weights in at a massive 72 kilos :o I had an idea he was over weight but did'nt think it would be that much , so it looks like he will be having to go on a diet after all , poor guy he really loves his Food too :(

As usual the vets recommend Hills Science Plan but i will just have to cut him down a bit he is on a healthier diet than he had been any way so i suppose it will be a bit of trial and error really ;)

LurcherGirl - May 11, 2005 02:40 PM (GMT)
:o   Sorry, can't help laughing... Poor thing, that is quite a bit of extra weight he is carrying around, isn't he.

Yes, just cut his food down by maybe a third and together with the exercise he is getting, he should be fit and trim in no time... :)

 Oh i had a chuckle too Vera poor guy no wonder he is so slow next to Akira  I don't think he is used to walking but i think he had better just get used to it now the big lump

He was very good , Akira played me up but not as badly as last time thankfully Storm did not want to get on the scales but i managed to get his front legs on and the vet nurse lifted his bum onto them , i could not decide if she was very brave or very silly  ( she was a big woman though ;) )

2 weeks ago at the vets Storm was weighed and was a heafty 72 Kilos today i have just had him weighted and he is 71.6 Kilos which means he has lost 400grms in 2 weeks I changed his diet over from the bakers complete he had been getting to more natural feeding and cut him down slightly as i wanted to see if the change in diet would help as opposed to cutting his food down too much , so i am really pleased that he has lost a bit , the vet thinks we should be aiming for around about a Kilo a month weight loss so thats fine and i am sure the added exercise he is getting can only be a bonus :D

Fiona xx

LurcherGirl - May 26, 2005 11:38 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a good plan! How on earth do you weigh him at home???? :o

Pyreelover - May 27, 2005 09:36 AM (GMT)
  I did'nt Vera i took him back to the vets , i am really pleased that the change of diet and more exercise is working for Storm as he loves his food and i didnt want to have to cut him back too much , and i have to say i felt a wee bit smug when yet another vet nurse tried to get me to put him on hills science plan super duper food aimed at weightloss , and i was able to say no thanks the natural feeding seems to be doing the trick :D

I did wonder if i would have to cut down his training treats as well but it looks like i wont need to , i am not treating him every time he does something now as he seems to be quite happy with a cuddle and some praise instead of a titbit , he is a real sweetie and loves cuddles :D

Oh dear i have just taken Storm to get weighted again to see how his weight is doing and according to the scales today he weighs in at 77.4 Kilos :o Now i know there is no way he could have possibly have put on 6 kilos in 2 weeks but now i am left wondering if the vets scales are broken or if they have missed Storm having a paw on the floor the last twice he has been weighed? He sat on the scales today and i could not believe it when they read 77.4 so i made him go on them again and standing with all four paws on the scales thats what it said :( If thats the case its a wonder the poor guy has not had a heart attack and i have been trying to make him walk a wee bit faster , now i feel guilty , no wonder he takes ages to sit or lie down and does the slowest recall ever poor poor boy , carrying that much extra weight is awful that would make him just over 12 Stone . doG knows what he must have weighed when he first came to me as i can see he has lost a wee bit since then :(

Poor Storm, I know how he feels, I dread Wednesdays and Weight Watchers :o

For the past 2/3 weeks Izzy seems to be eating quite a bit more than usual. She is a terribly fussy eater and I quite often struggle to make her eat, but she seems to be doing well at the mo. I am now wondering whether she knows that we are not getting a summer and is preparing herself for winter again

:o :o :o
Don't say that...

Pyreelover - August 7, 2005 11:29 AM (GMT)
I am losing heart over Storms weight , the last time i had him weighed on the 14/7 he weighed in at 78.2 kilos so he has put on a wee bit as oppossed to losing any , i am really annoyed at the vet nurse she must have been weighing him with his foot on the floor the first few times he was weighed as he appeared to be losing it .

I have emailed Ceri this morning to ask her what food she thinks would be best for Storm considering the weight he needs to lose , as i have obviously got it wrong with the natural diet i have been feeding him , i feel so sorry for him and such a failure as i was sure the change in diet had helped from the crap he was getting before he came to me :(

The one good thing is Storm will eat anything so putting him on CSJ will not be a problem i might even try madam on it again then again maybe not as she is such a fussy pants

LurcherGirl - August 7, 2005 11:41 AM (GMT)
She'll probably recommend to put him on Lamb & Rice Less Active (18% protein) or CP 18 ... but it's best to ask Ceri herself.

I had a look again this morning Vera but i thought i would ask as i am feeling really fed up and disheartened at the moment . Storm is a greedy guts at the best of times but i have cut him down as much as i feel i can and i dont want him to go hungry . Mind you i still think that if i fed him 10 times a day he would eat 10 times a day , i am feeding him twice a day the same as Akira but he is permenantly looking for things to pinch and i am not sure if thats just because he is a thief by nature or if he is really hungry :(

Fiona xx

Shazzy - August 7, 2005 10:03 PM (GMT)
I wish Izzy was like that - she wont eat much at all. She is so fussy.

Pyreelover - August 17, 2005 02:33 PM (GMT)
Well i think i have finally cracked it with Storms diet , i have been really down about his weight with all the messing about at the vets , him getting weighed with one foot on the floor for weeks , last time he was weighed he was 78.2KG's a month ago and today he weighed in at 75.6 KG's :D

I was worried that he had lost so much in a month but the vet nurse said because he has so much to lose it will not do him any harm and he has been getting a bit more active as well over the last few weeks so the extra exercise as well as the cut down in his food and treats seem to be working well for him . I have to take him back in a month again to see how its going, but hopefully thats us finally on the road to a slimmer trimmer Storm :D

Only about another 10 KG's still to lose now ;)

Fiona xx

Pyreelover - August 19, 2005 10:11 AM (GMT)
I just realized this morning that Storm still needs to lose about the equivelent of 10 bags of sugar :o Poor guy

Fiona xx

Pyreelover - September 20, 2005 07:50 PM (GMT)
Storm has lost another kilo this month so he is now 74.6 KG's :D

I don't think he will need to lose too much more as he is looking good and getting more active , i spoke to the vet today and she says they will acess (sp?) the situation when he has lost around another 5 KG's

Fiona xx

Pyreelover - December 12, 2005 05:00 PM (GMT)
;D I am grinning from ear to ear after taking Storm for his annual booster at the vets , i got him weighed again and he is now 70.6KGS which means he has lost 4 KGS since the 20th September ;D

Even with all his stealing :D :D

In total that means he has lost nearly 10KGS in the 7 months he has been here, as when i first got him weighed there were so many cock ups Jo (vet) thinks he must have been just under 80KGS when he first came here :o

To say i am pleased with him is an under statement he has so much more energy now and is managing to keep up with Akira when they are running these days , a big change from him lumbering along at a snails pace then refusing to move like he did at first , it is so lovely to see him so much more active and happier with it :D

Fiona xx

Pyreelover - March 13, 2006 12:10 PM (GMT)
:D Got Storm weighed again on Saturday and he weighs 68.6 Kilos now , had a long chat with the diet/nutrition specialist and she is really pleased that i have managed to get so much weight off him steadily over the months , she thinks he should be about right at 65 Kilos but will check when he gets to that to see what she thinks then . I am inclined to think he maybe could go down a wee bit further as he still seems to be carrying a fair bit extra but i will see when he loses another 3 kilos

Fiona xx

Pyreelover - July 8, 2006 05:10 PM (GMT)
I took Storm to get weighed last week and the norty boy has put on a wee bit of weight , from 68.6 KG's to 69 KG's not a huge amount but he is having his belt tightened again , now he is more active i have been a wee bit too free with his treats i think so poor guy will have to get them cut back again :(

That and the fact he has managed to get up to his old tricks of stealing again as the kids have been a bit too untidy and leaving food where he can reach it  So the kids got yet another lecture and Storm got a wee pep talk

Fiona xx

Pyreelover - September 12, 2006 11:32 AM (GMT)
Storm seems to be stuck at just under 69 KG's he has not put anything on for a few months but he has'nt lost anything either :(

I have cut down on his treats and he is still getting the same amount of food i hate the thought of cutting him down even more but i think i am going to have to as he really does still need to lose a few KG's

Awww he's done well, let him stay like that lol. Joking of course, I don't know very much about all the nutritiony stuff. My Charlie still needs to add meat to his furry skeleton as yet. But is he really chubby? You don't want to have a skinny millink banana legs (my mum used to say that to me! haha!). Maybe if he's fine running and his weight stays steady he should just be that weight... or maybe you should get him to do weights! haha again, joking of course. But to lose that much is a great thing, and whatever happens, you're at least trying which is more than I can say for some dog owners I know.

Chow, chow.
Jay.
