Holy sh*t, that's right. Well, happy birthday man. How's McNeils, still pumping out the finest brews on God's green earth?

Harrison Bergeron - July 22, 2006 07:42 PM (GMT)
Right now, I'm listening to a Clifford Brown/Max Roach CD someone sent me. Pretty good stuff, so far.

OakBan - July 22, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)

Jerk-Off

QUOTE
* Used to be a bunch of assholes that lived in this part of the building, here...But we systematically removed them like you would any kind of termite or roach * **spoken prelude**

Someone told me once
that there's a right and wrong
punishment was cure
to those who dare to cross the line.
But it must not be true
for jerk-offs just like you.
Maybe it takes longer to catch a total asshole.
but I'm tired of waiting.

Someone told me once
that there's a right and wrong,
punishment was cure
for those who dare to cross the line.
But it must not be true
for jerk-offs just like you.
and maybe it's just bullshit
I should play god
and shoot you myself.
tired of waiting.

Consequences dictate
course of action
and it doesn't matter what's right
It's only wrong if you get caught.
If consequences dictate
my course of action i should
I should play god
and just shoot you myself.
tired of waiting.

shoot it
kick it
fuck it
shoot you in your fucking head.

Actually, these days I mostly just put my iPod on Shuffle and let it decide what I should listen to. It's like having a five thousand-song mixtape. Although it can be very jarring to go from Bob Marley's "Sun is Shining" to Pantera's "Use My Third Arm"...

Carl Sagan - July 31, 2006 06:39 PM (GMT)
Mr. Bungle - California

One of my hallowed top-10 albums.

I'm going through and re-ripping all my CDs to MP3s, then as I put them back in the case I'm alphabetizing them. It's interesting to see what CDs end up next to each other.

And yeah, I put it on shuffle but to avoid the shock you described I do it within a genre such as Classic Rock, Rock, Metal, etc.

I've always kept my alphabetized. Its too hard to find a particular CD otherwise if you have a lot of them.

These guys:

http://www.myspace.com/collapsar

Hard rock instrumental stuff, I think people would like it.

Carl Sagan - August 2, 2006 09:22 PM (GMT)
Great overlooked jazzy-rock band Karate.

http://home.hetnet.nl/~unsolved/real/real_audio.htm

click the album on the left, then the song on the right. The stuff on "Pockets" is pretty sweet.

CHAZBUKOWSKI - August 2, 2006 10:39 PM (GMT)
Jackie Wilson. Tough to beat that voice.

Carl Sagan - August 4, 2006 06:40 PM (GMT)
Buckethead - Inbred Mountain

Bizarre mix of bluegrass, arena rock and shred metal.

Creeping_Malaise - August 4, 2006 07:45 PM (GMT)
how do you find this somewhat obscure music? I know there are a lot of musicians and bands out there with a lot of talent, and very worth listening to, I just don't know how to find them.

do you spend a lot of time sifting through garbage to find the good stuff?

Carl Sagan - August 4, 2006 08:14 PM (GMT)
1. Get Soulseek
2. When you hear of an interesting band, download a couple tracks
3. If you like it, buy it.

Your insistence on callings sampled music "stealing" is preventing you from hearing 90% of the bands recommended. I guarantee you I don't have 12, or even 2, buckethead albums if I hadn't gotten to sample his music first. Everyone wins but the record companies trying to push their crap acts on us.

Depending on the area you are in, you can hit the band scene, and pick up on the current stuff. Some listen to a lot of satellite radio, which has some stations that are pretty current. Some web sites are pretty decent. Allmusic.com lets you view by genre. They also list similar artists. So, if you find one band you like, they will tell you other bands that MIGHT appeal to you. It is actually a pretty cool site. If you have any questions about music, you can find the answer there. Who does that song? Every song by every group? etc.

Carl Sagan - August 4, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)

Yes, very nice. I use that site extensively, their ratings are very accurate.

All good suggestions, one great radio station is KCRW.com, a mix of great music shows and quality talk radio.

I never called sampled music stealing. I explicitly said that as long as you're just checking it out, and buy it if you like it, it's not stealing.

Please keep your lying about my statements to the politics board. Thanks.

Yeah, between Allmusic and IMDB, you can answer almost any questions regarding music or movies.

Example: Was that Richard Dreyfuss in the background of the boarding room scene in The Graduate? Why yes it was.

I did that when I lived in Detroit. I actually did stage lighting for a few bands, and met a lot of other bands through them and at their shows. It was fantastic.

But now I live in Miami where a "bar band" is three 15 year olds making a bunch of noise. Seriously.

It's all about the DJ's down here.

Sounds like a good system. I'll have to check it out, thanks.

Step #2 is the problem. Where do you hear of interesting bands? There just isn't a music scene down here like there was in Detroit. It's one of the few things I don't like about living down here.

You're sitting in front of a computer. There have gotta be at least 10,000 sites dedicated to exploring new music, 10,000 message boards listing bands, 10,000 blogs discussing them.

Just about daily I read:

rateyourmusic.com
pitchforkmedia.com
ultimatemetal.com message boards
mfdoomsite.headringer.net message boards

Some blogs on the invision boards are informative as well

Here's one you need to buy: "Jaku" by DJ Krush. I don't know if you like the hip hop/electronica genre at all, nonetheless this album should be in the collection of every ganja smoker on the planet. Just go buy it, pop it in, and sit back with a fresh bong and enjoy. I seriously doubt you'll be disappointed.

Personally, right now its Grandaddy - Sumday.
