Title: Just moved to Seattle

Chin - October 17, 2009 10:40 PM (GMT)
Apparently, I missed the e-mail. But at some point this week, we must have moved to Seattle. It's been in the high 30s raining and foogy for 4 days straight.

I've not yet seen a lot of latte sipping hippies who look like a bad Eddie Vedder impersonator in need of a shower. So, it may just all be a bad dream. ;)

I think you are about 1000 miles too far north in your assessment. Fog is in San Francisco more than Seattle. Plus, it's the latte sipping soccer moms in Seattle. Hippies are still standard San Francisco fare. Other than those minor details you are about correct.

;)

I know it is cliche to say about SF. But I went ther whenI was about 16. We went in August. We had just spent a week sweating balls in Arizona. We get to SF and the first stop after checking in at the hotel was a trip to the Macy's in Union Square to buy long pants and sweaters. We froze our butts off most of the week.

Sounds about right. I hope you checked out the Cheesecake Factory on the top floor of Macy's. Great view of Union Square from a heated terrace.

I was there in 1985. At that time, the top floor was ladies britches, which is kinda like cheesecake. ;)

I'm in the midwest, we went 4 days last week without seeing the sun. Almost forgot what it looked like. Thank God for friday.... :yup:

Yeah, this rain sucks. We are actually having an early BD party for my son Owen today. Why, early? So we could take advantage of the nicer weather in October. Originally it was supposed to be last Sunday but another kid in his class was havinga BD party that day so we moved it to this Sunday. Fuck me, It was supposed to be outside. Now everyone is going to be crammed indoors.

Yeah, that sucks!

I have a football game to coach at 4:00. We've had over 2 inches of rain and the filed is a mud pit. we coaches tried to make the case that the field is not in a safe play condition. But, we were over ruled.

I agree. But not for kids as young as 6 who don't know they have to change their foot holds in a mud pit. There will be a lot of ankle and knee injuries today.

Sounds like you and the opposing coaches should simply refuse to put the kids in that danger. It would be an absolute travesty for a 6 year old to blow out his knee or ankle for a game that could be made up at a later date, or could be agreed to be scored as a tie.

Unfortunately, even at the youth level, some decisions are about money. The loss of a home game would cost the home league @ 7500 in lost revenue.

I'm sure that was a factor in the decision, which is why I no longer serve on the board. When it becomes about the board and the parents, and not the kids and the game, I'm not interested in helping.

I'm sure that the kids are not worth the 7500 that the league would lose.

Sounds like the league needs to have new board members that are actually interested in the health and welfare of the kids instead of the revenue generated by the games.

Again, JMO. No disrespect intended toward you and the other coaches as it appears that you are not the problem. However, if I had kids that were scheduled to play in those conditions, I would absolutely refuse to let them play and risk serious injury. So if the coaches can't effect a rescheduling, perhps the parents need to step in and put their collective foot down.

Again, JMO.

Won't happen. The average parent has no football acumen whatsoever.

The goal at this point is to call a game that keeps everyone as safe from injury as possible and try to keep someone from catching the flu.

I know its easy for me to sit here and say this, but isn't it this attitude that has enabled the board to develop this mentality to begin with? :chinstroke:

And c'mon, given the current flu climate, do we really need MORE sick kids running around??? :nope:

No. I don't think it is that attitude that enables the board. What enables the board is parent apathy. The board is elected by the parents. But when only 10-15 percent of the parents show up to vote, the board is comprised of basically one collective personality.

I spent 5 years on the board, as VP. But our bylaws give gametime decision authority to the ADs. So if they say play, you play. The answer is remove that power and create a competition committee on the board to wrest the power from the ADs.

I proposed it 3 years in a row. It was defeated each time because it would mean board members would actually have work to do. In their mind, it is easier to do nothing and blame others.

what's needed are board members who will put the chirrens' well being foremost, not coaches who cross their fingers.
