:spaz: This man is outright insane.
"I can assure you, Senator, that Christ would never advocate turning the other cheek to terrorists and America's enemies, as your smug laughter so clearly implies".

Jesus must have been kidding as he instructed Matt and Luke...

Matthew 5:39
But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Luke 6:29
If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic.

as the narrator indicated --- those passages were taken so far out of context its laughable.

1. no surprise he doesn't understand that context....guy doesn't even know how to find the door to the white house

2. please don't ask me to explain it to you kali --- you have a computer, figure it out yourself

Couchpotato - September 28, 2009 05:11 PM (GMT)
Christ wasnt speaking of life threatening situations Kali. He had on his mind every day life occurances not someone breaking down your door wishing you bodily harm. Slapping someone in those times was an insult and not down with vicious intent. You will notice Christ didnt say if someone hits you on the left side of your head with an axe offer him the right...

Im sure you have also heard "and eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth" from the old testament? The jewish people of the time took this to the extreme often abusing the verse to get every last penny from an offender. Christ was countering the faulty interpertation of the old testament verse.

Oh... I see. So, YOU and "the narrator" know exactly what was meant in each and every "passage" of the Bible. :D

How do you know what Christ was speaking of CP? Did he give you private lessons?

Fact is, everyone interprets the Bible differently, and the O.T. has a TON of lunacy in it.

It's called learning about what was happening at the time and putting Christ's words into that context. Also it isnt as if Im the only one saying this. People who have studied the Bible as a career get the same read on this passage as well.

Chin - September 29, 2009 03:11 PM (GMT)
The passages in the Bible resound differently for each reader.

There is no defined "right answer".

Words have meaning. The words in the Bible are no exception.

Chin - September 29, 2009 04:19 PM (GMT)
I agree. I don't believe I said differently.

But the words will resonate differently from reader to reader.

Yep, that's what I said.

I understood your statement and didnt bother beating around the bush.

Anything can "resound" differently with different people. That doesn't diminish the fact there is a distinct and correct meaning.

Chin - September 29, 2009 04:28 PM (GMT)
I don't disagree.

I do contend that most people have no idea what that meaning is, in most cases.

Particularly those who like to quote scripture for their own purposes.

Chin - September 29, 2009 05:09 PM (GMT)
Wow.

So I guess that takes care of that. there doesn't seem to be any dispute over the matter.

Couchpotato - September 29, 2009 07:35 PM (GMT)
Chin, while I agree with your statement that verses in the Bible mean different things to different people and even different things to the same person depending on where they are in their life(one of the things that makes the Bible so beautifully written imo). You have to do the research behind what was said. We have to remember that the Bible as we are reading it has been translated likely from Greek or Hebrew. As we all well know sometimes meanings get lost in translation. Also you have to know the context in which things were said in order to know what was meant at the time it was said. In this case Jesus was countering the "eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" verse from the old testament because of it's abuse by the Isrealites in civil matters. He wasnt talking about wars or violent acts.

Chin - September 29, 2009 07:54 PM (GMT)
CP,

I'm quite clear on the passage and it's context. And I'm quite clear on what Jesus was attempting to teach in the passage. Here it is in it's entirety...

5:38 You have heard that it has been said, An eye for an eye, and a
tooth for a tooth:

5:39 But I say unto you, That you resist not evil: but whosoever shall
smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.

5:40 And if any man will sue you at the law, and take away your coat,
let him have your cloak also.

5:41 And whosoever shall compel you to go a mile, go with him two.

5:42 Give to him that asks you, and from him that would borrow of you
turn you not away.

5:43 You have heard that it has been said, You shall love your
neighbor, and hate your enemy.

5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you,
do good to them that hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use
you, and persecute you;

5:45 That you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven:
for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends
rain on the just and on the unjust.

5:46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? do not
even the publicans the same?

5:47 And if you salute your brothers only, what do you more than
others? do not even the publicans so?

5:48 Be you therefore perfect, just as your Father which is in heaven
is perfect.

Jesus is very clear that God passes no judgement by way of the earthly fruits and that said fruits are sprinkled evenly among all men, good and evil. IN the sermon on the mount, his instruction is intended more for the benefit of the listener during life, not as an entrance requirement for after life.

These are the intended lessons of the entirety of the Sermon on the Mount.

It is Jesus saying "Do these things when I leave and it will be easier for you to find me when I return." That's why it begins with the Beatitudes.

So, long story short, as it relates to this particular passage, acts of vengeance will make your life more difficult. Do not seek justice at the sacrifice of self peace.

There, is that pretty clear?

Couchpotato - September 30, 2009 12:15 AM (GMT)
So do you think that verse applies to what was stated at the beginning of the thread? I personally dont.

QUOTE (Couchpotato @ Sep 29 2009, 07:15 PM)
So do you think that verse applies to what was stated at the beginning of the thread? I personally dont.

I think both parties have cherry picked scripture to fit their agenda.

Jesus addresses these types of people...

6:5 And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for
they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the
streets, that they may be seen of men. Truthfully I say unto you, They
have their reward.

6:6 But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have
shut your door, pray to your Father which is in secret; and your
Father which sees in secret shall reward you openly.

6:7 But when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do:
for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

6:8 Be not you therefore like unto them: for your Father knows what
things you have need of, before you ask him.

It is not for me to say whether either of these people has chosen the way.
However, Jesus, in his wisdom (PBUH) has also given us guidance as to how we should approach these types and their aspirations...

Interpretation is relative, CP. That's a fact. Regardless of how you or I may choose to view the words and actions of another, there will always be someone who holds a differing view.

So... your sentence should read, "SOME people who have studied the Bible as a career get the same read on this passage as well."

I answered your question. Did you have something to add to it that would show how you were staying on course?
