NEW YORK - Les Paul, the guitarist and inventor who changed the course of music with the electric guitar and multitrack recording and had a string of hits, many with wife Mary Ford, died on Thursday. He was 94.

According to Gibson Guitar, Paul died of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital. His family and friends were by his side.

As an inventor, Paul helped bring about the rise of rock ’n’ roll and multitrack recording, which enables artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves, and then carefully balance the “tracks” in the finished recording.

Was just about to post this. One of the great privileges of living in NYC was frequently going to see his trio play the Iridium on Mondays.

I would have really enjoyed that. I own 3 guitars and 2 of them are LP's.

It was really awesome. He used to rotate in some great musicians. I saw him several times and it was always a great and fresh show. Plus, it was just amazing how much he obviously loved playing the guitar. He just seemed to get a real kick out of it and that was the most memorable thing beyond the great music in a very intimate venue.
