While some will make the argument that he was the greatest American writer, there is no doubt that he was the most prolific. Outside of his many books, he also was a significant contributor to many magazines, most notably The New Yorker.
This may be his best piece, written in 1960. If you like great writing combined with nostalgic sports, enjoy...

always sad to see a great talent like that pass. i never read any of his books, but i've enjoyed several of his stories, articles, and poems.
