Many porters these days, at least among the commercially available, make two mistakes. They add way too much hops(or they use Cascade hops, blech), or they roasted barley and turn into a wussy stout. St. Peter's makes neither of these mistakes in their old-style porter.
The color is light, which is a good sign that they haven't overdone it with the black patent malt. A deep reddish brown, it could be a brown ale, or even a really dark IPA. Amazingly clear for such a dark beer.
The aroma is of malt and coffee, the head is "beady" and profuse. The body is a bit thin, thin enough to distinguish it from stouts or other dark beers, yet just a wee bit heavier than a typical brown ale. The flavor is excellent, heavy sweetness from the malt, and a whole bunch of toasty/chocolatey flavor that blends with the maltiness just right, balancing the sweetness nicely. There is no noticable hop flavor or aroma with this beer, which is a good thing.
Overall, I'd have to say this is one of the better porters I've ever had. Would that more American breweries could take their cue from these guys, they really know how to craft a fine porter beer. Highly reccomended, if you like this kind of beer.
