I was actually concerned at first when I heard they were cutting the squid, but it seemed to work out quite well, and the more and more that I think about, what they did makes a lot of sense.

If you look closely, the reactor Veidt created with Osterman (that causes the explosions to begin with) is called "S.Q.U.I.D.", and when NYC blows up, you can see blue tentacles coming out of the shockwave bubble.

The S.Q.U.I.D. label is shown on the wall in Karnak during the scene where Veidt is on a PC monitor waiting for Jon to teleport the reactor there (after after Jon has sex with Laurie). It's only on screen for about 10 seconds, though.
