Title: Wine
John_Galt - September 22, 2006 04:04 AM (GMT)
It has taken me a while, but I have finally come to the conclusion that wine is vastly superior to beer. I still enjoy beer now and then (especially during Longhorn/Cowboy games; wine doesn't seem to fit), but on balance I much prefer wine. The buzz is better (who doesn't feel like Hemingway while tripped on wine?) Less is more, in that it seems to take large amounts of beer to do the trick that wine can do in a small number of glasses. And it is something that the French do well, God bless them; there are so many things they don't do well, it's nice to see them excel at winemaking.
I almost exclusively drink French wine, 95%+ red. Anyone else? Italian is decent as well, and some South American and California wines don't exactly suck either (I am thinking specifically of the Coppola Black Diamond Claret), but the French seem to have a knack for the stuff.

French is alright, I personally much prefer California reds, especially Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.

i prefer california whites.
wine usually is 12-15% alcohol by volume. most popular beers are ~4.4%. do the math.

Aye, that's the beauty of the entire enterprise.
And math is quite wonderful....

If a little more kick is what you're looking for, check out some Cali Zins. A lot of the good ones are over 15%, just a couple days ago I had one that was 16%.

Are you guys going to start talking about feelings?

I don't like wine, wine coolers, wine spritzers, champaign or even grape juice.
Beer is fine, but I prefer something harder. Give me vodka, tequila, burbon/whiskey or gin.
Margaritas, Crown and coke, screwdrivers, Long Island iced tea, whiskey sours, or just give it to me in a shot glass if I need to give my buzz a jumpstart.

I like margaritas, other than that I'm not big on mixed drinks or hard liquor in general. Although I do like Irish carbombs...
Wine is definately my favorite booze though.

a typical margarita is something like 700 calories and i find it a very...feminine drink. no thanks. when i want liquor it's usually jack, straight. i dont like soda so i dont like mixed drinks.

I drink plenty of red, and white about once every two or three blue moons.
Try to drink the foreign stuff these days. One fact I'll always remember is that when you're buying most California wines, you're helping pay some of the most expensive rent in the world. Argentinian and Chilean stuff isn't noticeably different, and you can get plenty of quality stuff for $10/bottle. Not too big on French or Eastern European vinos.
One cheaper brand that hits the spot are the BV Coastals, in all my travels that is one that seems to be unusually good, both the merlot and cabernet.

Harrison, out here there is some stuff called "Tommy's Margarita Mix"......from the tequila bar Tommy's in San Francisco. Its somewhat hard to find, usually at liquor stores, but dammit its just about the best drink in the world. Unbelievable how good the stuff is.

I had a Bulgarian red the other day (sorry, forget the name.) It was passable, though it seemed to get overly tannic the longer it hung around. The last glass was nigh on undrinkable.
I did manage though.
