Microsoft will stop making external HD DVD drives for its Xbox 360 game console, but won't say whether it will offer a Blu-ray Disc drive instead.

The company will continue to provide warranty and product support for existing HD DVD players, it said.

The Xbox 360 has a standard DVD drive built in: support for high-definition content came only with an add-on. Sony's Playstation 3 console, however, has a Blu-ray Disc drive built in, which helped grow support for the rival high-definition format.

Microsoft's announcement comes barely a week after HD DVD's main backer, Toshiba, saidit will stop making the drivesin the face of declining support for its high-definition format from retailers and studios. HD DVD's other supporters included Microsoft, Intel, HP and Universal Studios. Blu-ray also had the support of Panasonic and Samsung.

Warner Bros., which initially supported HD DVD,said early this year it would switchto Blu-ray Disc, a decision widely seen as a mortal blow to the format. Retailer Wal-Mart also recently said it would no longer sell HD DVDs.

Initially, Microsoft saidToshiba's announcement would have no effecton its Xbox plans.

A Microsoft spokesperson said Monday morning that the company is taking the long-term view that support for specific high-definition drives is less important as people increasingly look to download movies and content from the Internet.

good luck with that 50GB download.

again, how many HD movies can you store on a hard drive? one, MAYBE two. how long until it's dozens? how many people's connections can handle a 50GB download? very few, if any. how long until that becomes mainstream and affordable?

is it coming? maybe. but no time soon.

Coming soon enough. Renting is where its at and HD isn't even popular yet. Hell, redboxes outside Mcdonalds do a ton of business with their $1 rentals. Now tell those masses to go spend hundreds on a player and how much again for a blue ray movie for extra clarity. The masses don't care yet. meantime downloading right into the home will become more and more attractive and more capable. You speak from your habits. If everyone wanted to keep their movies dvd rental business wouldn't have been so successful.

I rent. why? because I don't want to keep EVERY movie.

so you don't think people will pay hundreds for a Bluray player, but they'll pay hundreds for that Apple thing, or for a PC or other device that will let them download and store movies?

and again, Bluray isn't just about movies.

That Apple TV was a hell of alot more then movies. Regardless digital download will be the future not Blue Ray.

so should the movie industry have held off and never produced DVDs because at some time in the future something else would take their place? same question for records, tapes, CDs, etc.

there is always a better thing coming, that's really a silly argument.

Good point, but dvrs, etc. all point to digital distribution.

the menu features are all there - just like renting a DVD
