Title: what's up with that?

sadus - October 12, 2007 02:41 PM (GMT)
i've noticed more and more that when i try to get in and out of threads i get disconnected from the board, sometimes for less than 30 seconds, sometimes for a few minutes. it happens a lot when i try to send pms and post responses too. i've lost several posts and and some pms that way. now i copy everything before i hit send because it has become such an issue. any idea what's up there harrison or creep or someone?

No idea, hasnt' happened to me ever. Probably the issue is at your end.

Best bet would be to ask creep, he's the one who knows anything about how these magic boxes work...

MagnusBuchan - October 14, 2007 02:24 AM (GMT)
Haven't noticed it either.

sadus - October 14, 2007 01:24 PM (GMT)
i've heard a few others mention it happen to them, especially when posting a reply, so i figured i'd ask. i googled to see if any other boards had that issue and some links suggested it was the site's bandwith limit being bounced up against or something. i'm able to surf and connect to other sites while this is going on, so i figured it wasn't on my end, but what do i know about any of this stuff. no big deal, copying prior to posting keeps it form being an issue anymore.

sounds a little strange, likely a site issue. about the only thing that would log you out on your end is if your cookie(s) somehow got deleted.

if i understand you, it doesn't really log me out. when i eventually get the connection back, i am still logged in to the board. i just get temporarily disconnected from the site. in fact, i think that's the message IE gives me....a message screen saying the site is temporarily unavailable, and the post or pm i just tried to send gets lost. i do erase my cookies and add ons every few days though, but never while i'm online. you may have something there, i don't know.

oh, I didn't realize what you meant. the only way I could even speculate on what's happening is if you copy/paste the exact text of what the page says when it happens. there are many different possible messages similar to what you're describing.

sadus - October 15, 2007 07:53 PM (GMT)
oh, ok. i guess i'll have to do that next time it happens. it's relatively infrequent, maybe a few times a week, but if it's on my end i'd like to get it worked out if possible.

Perhaps the grid is trying to kick you out?

What kind of connection do you have? Unless it's dialup, you wouldnt really know if it was a really quick break in the connection. My DSL goes out sometimes at home, but since I dont dial up, it reconnects itself immediately, so going to another page a few seconds later would make it look like I never missed a beat.

Or if you are surfing other sites, ads and crap could be sucking up your bandwidth and cause IE to timeout this site.

Firefox is better anyway.

i have that verizon fios fiber optic thing. and it is a laptop, so it's wireless. but i am very close to the signal, the strength is always excellent or very good, and plus i have that connection icon that shows my connection status. it gets a red X over it or some exclamation point notice thingy if i lose connection or have limited connectivity. that does not happen when this issue happens. when this happens, it's when i'm trying to post something or change pages. it takes like 10 seconds or so trying to load or post, never does, then gives me that message.

yes, i always have multiple windows open when i'm here. usually no more than 3 or 4 though. i tested my upload and download speeds 6 or 7 times. upload was always around 1100 kbps. the download was between 4700 and 5000 kbps six of the seven times but dropped all the way to 1060 one of the times. probably something on my end with something. it's pretty infrequent though. between the time i started this thread and the time i posted that ie message, it only happened that once.

yeah, i've heard that, i might have to try that out instead.

Huh. Maybe it is a server issue then, I have never had a problem, but I post mainly at night from a T3.
