And who can forget the annoying whistling idiot from Champ's avatar??

Also: anything where they turn the volume up to get your attention. MUTE. Now I dont hear your commercial at all, bitch!

I_OnlyStabWest - June 23, 2007 04:43 PM (GMT)
I agree with the computer education one, and the Enzyte simply because they always air two of them back to back
the most annoying(IMO) would have to be the Head On ads

Kali Maa - June 23, 2007 11:03 PM (GMT)
I hate "The Clapper" commercials and the "Chia Pets" commercials.

ComandantePepsi - June 23, 2007 11:04 PM (GMT)

tecate commercials on the radio, could these guys be trying harder to sound Mexican?

MagnusBuchan - September 17, 2007 02:29 AM (GMT)
I'm going to go ahead and pin this, because there is no shortage of commercials which make me want to poke someone's eye out with an ice pick.

I also would like to nominate that cingular commercial where the whole family is talking in text slang. AT&T is so cool, they know what MYOB means! SHUT THE FUCK UP!

I love this commercial... maybe not so much the actual commercial, but the jingle stays in my head and it's kind of catchy...

It's real-life people with an Aftereffects filter applied that someone thought was cool.

It adds nothing.

I can understand that it is probably one that many people might hate, but there's just something about those Snickers commercials where the guy with the guitar asks, "Can I help you enjoy that Snickers?", then busts into song...

Happy peanuts soar over chocolate covered mountaintops,
And waterfalls of caramel.

Prancing nougat in the meadow sings a song of satisfaction
To the world.

Another California-only spot...

This year's Cal Milk "Adachi Family" campaign is crap. It's everything that is wrong with copy that depends on being creative and forgets it's a marketing tool.

Anything with Bob Seger music in it, which pretty much means all Chevy ads. Like a fucking rock? Like you fucking suck.

That Heineken keg ad with the robot girl. What the fuck is Heineken shooting for from a branding standpoint? "Are you a robot? Have we got the beer for you!" "Do you want to drink beer from a green robot girl? You're gonna love this!"

How about the McDonalds ad where the guys are trying to one up each other on what great deals they got on their work clothes and then the girl says she got her piece of shit burger for $1 (aren't you fucking the clever one! only $1 for garbage?!). Meanwhile, this ad was obviously boarded up by women. men don't compare notes on who got good deals on work clothes. We sit there and try to impress one another on how much money we spent on our fake rolex and our snappy shoes. Cuz we're so rich and dont care about money and all that shit. Duh.

Any beer commercial where a girl gets hit or knocked out by a flying bottle, pipe, board, an opening door or the like. When did that become funny? It's all the rage these days. [edit: it would be funny if it were Kali-ma the ape girl]

Sad thing is, I've made commercials. The process itself leads to this kind of mindlessnes. The original idea was probably good at some point but then some jackass (usually someone's boss) is like "Yeah, but what if the beer came out of a tap on the robot girl?" and everyone's like "Yeahhhhhh" and there you are.

My first agency job was at a medium-sized regional shop in LA. Our biggest client was McDonalds (franchisees, not corporate). If you remember those 'Mac Tonight' TV spots, that was originally our campaign.

In 1990 we rolled out a new campaign for the now-defunct Home Base (became House 2 Home and promptly went under in 2002) stores under the direction of some supposedly well known creative director (who was so famous I'd never heard of him and have subsequently forgotten who he was) that had the shop all in a buzz.

Until they previewed the spots.

With the entire agency watching, they previewed their new TV campaigns for 1991 and showed us a couple of spots for all clients.

Apparently this creative guy had a fetish for dressing up actors as objects. The one I've never forgotten because it was so putrid was the Home Base appliance spot with Marv Kaplan (Henry from TV's "Alice") dressed--and I f'ing kid you not-- as a dryer hose coughing up hairballs.

The ad for Pepsi with ginsing or some shit added to it where everyone's yawning.

The intent of the ad is to use yawns, which are contagious, to get the viewer to yawn. Then they show someone drinking this stuff and he/she isn't yawning. Drink it and you won't yawn.

I've never once yawned watching those lame ads.

At least the one's with the Cowboys are funny at the end with Jerry staring down the OC in the booth after Romo gets sacked.

Them's the one. Not sure exactly how they think they're selling milk.

Last year's Da-iry spots were at least funny and gave you a reason to watch. These new ones look like a bad science fiction movie and make even less sense.

when i worked at Sony and we were launching our e-commerce site, the e-commerce guys decided they wanted to do a series of spots for Christmas. What did they come up with?

A series of spots where some guys kidnap Santa and use sonystyle.com to order consumer electronics. They drug Santa, kidnap him, take him out to a driving range and hit golf balls at him, they tie him up to a chair in their hideout, etc.

I was in the meeting when the President of US was shown these spots. A mild-mannered Japanese guy, his face got red and he started yelling and throwing his note pad at the sonystyle guy. He like "Are you f'ing kidding? You're going to say position the Sony brand as the one that ruined Christmas for all the little boys and girls by kidnapping Santa and torturing him? Are you out of your mind? No. Absolutely not!"

Which brings me back to my original point...how did it even get that far? I mean, after 3 seconds I knew it was a bad idea. But these guys had worked with an agency to board the spots, to film them to get budget approvals, etc. and no one said, "A wait a minute. Do you think Fujio will be Ok with these?"
