Australia is preparing a move out of the Oceania Football Confederation to join the Asians in a move resisted by New Zealand Soccer.

While the move would make New Zealand the strongest OFC nation, soccer bosses say losing the confederation's biggest fish would be a curse rather than a blessing.

"Without Australia, we would lose much of our bargaining power and revenue streams. The best we could aspire to would be being the best of 10 island nations. There is a lot of water to flow under the bridge before this happens"

Not sure how good Australia is, but would probably be a good move for them since Asia has more qualifying spots and not many strong teams.

I live in australia and there was news of this about 3 months ago, if australia did join thay would have to give half of the oceania spot or something but since they only have half than all the nations from around here would have to belong to asia. This is happening with the new league called A-League, the winner and runner up might be allowed to play in the asian champions league, the best club is Perth Glory ( www.perthglory.com.au ), there is also talk about a new champions league called the pacifc champions leagues with clubs from MLS, Asia, Central America and Australia ANd New Zealand.

Australia on paper is an amazing team, they are better than USA (I think they are any way).
players like..........Kewell, Cahill, Viduka, Schwarzer, Grella, Breciano
well u know

How did Australia do in qualifying for the 2002 WC? Did they make it to the play-off?

Yes they got to the play off and won the 1st leg 1-0 and then lost the 2nd won 3-0 against Uruguay

Wow I was just looking at some of their WCQ scores and they are ridiculous! 31-0! Instead of joining the AFC the OFC should get a qualifying spot from the AFC. That's just unfair for Australia to have to play-off against Argentina or Uruguay just to get a spot while other nations don't have to go through nearly as difficult teams.

Monkey See Monkey Do:

Now New Zealand wants out of OFC as well!

heh, I don't know if FIFA is going to allow their top 2 teams to leave the OFC. The smarter thing to do would to be to award a spot to the OFC instead, this would solve all(or at least most) of the problems without having to have teams leave the OFC.

FIFA appear to have told New Zealand Soccer to put their Asian invasion plans on ice with uncertainty now surrounding Australia's planned split from Oceania.

The Asian Football Confederation is reportedly poised to invite Australia to become its 46th member in Kuala Lumpur next week.

ive said for many a year now that top spot in ofc should automatically qualify you to the world cup,the runner up should be involved in a play off with whoever,i think that would be the right way to go :goodjob:
