"It has caused tension in the region," he said, reading from a prepared statement at a news conference. "We voice our strongest protest."

China unveiled details of the anti-secession bill on Tuesday, which allows military force to head off any Taiwan independence bid.

Beijing views the self-ruled island as part of its territory and has threatened to launch an attack if it declares formal statehood.

The Chinese parliament is expected to approve the bill on March 14.

This doesn't look good at all. If China follows through this could cause trouble (especially if the UN or USA intervene which is likely). Hopefully it doesn't go that far though

The United States on Tuesday urged Beijing to reconsider what it called an "unhelpful" anti-secession bill that gives China the right to attack Taiwan, and it warned against the use of force.

"We view it as unhelpful and something that runs counter to recent trends toward a warming in cross straits relations (with Taiwan). We call on Beijing to reconsider passage of the law," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters.

Big surprise. US is scared out of their minds to do something about big threats or concerns like China or North Korea but instead is willing to go after a weak and almost defenseless Iraq that poses little to no threat. If a middle eastern country had said this instead of China, you can bet the USA wouldn't be as passive as it's being right now.

Seems like they made this statement because they knew it was expected of them, but in reality this is just a "please don't" message to China, rather than implying they will protect the people of Taiwan and their freedom like they did for the Iraqi people (or so they claimed it was for them). Where is the liberation mission for Taiwan? Or are those only necessary when there is no formidable threat or opposition to the US?

Makes me sick. This was pretty much a threat from China and all the USA has to say is nothing. Hypocrisy 101!

Atari, you do know that Iraq was all about oli and nothing more.

Neo - March 9, 2005 03:16 AM (GMT)
that goes without saying. But my point is they'll be quite the hypocrites if they don't protect Taiwan after preaching about protecting the Iraqis.

Hutnik Krakow - March 9, 2005 03:43 AM (GMT)
Don`t be surprised.

Neo - March 9, 2005 04:08 AM (GMT)
lol are you kidding? They are terrified of China, or for that matter - anyone who might actually put up a fight

Hutnik Krakow - March 9, 2005 04:05 PM (GMT)
That`s what I meant, don`t be surprised if they do nothing, they are mostly scared of North Korea, lol.

China's parliament, the National People's Congress (NPC), ratified the Anti-Secession Law with an overwhelming vote of 2,896 to nil here Monday, setting a legal framework to prevent Taiwan's secession from China and to promote peaceful national reunification.

The law, which consists of ten articles, provides for the legislative purpose and scope of application of the legislation, the nature of the Taiwan issue, achieving national reunification through peaceful means, and taking non-peaceful means to stop Taiwan's secession from China by the "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces.

Heh, ''peaceful," ssssssure

A massive weekend march planned in Taiwan against China's anti-secession law could raise tensions and set back bilateral ties, academics quoted in the official China Daily said on Friday

The United States, which has pledged to defend Taiwan in the event of an attack, has said the legislation could set back cross-Strait relations and called its passage "unfortunate."

This really could be troubling if China doesn't back down!
