| Boeing officials said yesterday that they asked Mr. Stonecipher to quit because events surrounding an affair he was having with a female employee might embarrass the company. |
| QUOTE |
Boeing officials said Mr. Stonecipher, a 68-year-old married father and grandfather, has admitted to an affair with an unidentified long-time female executive of the company. An anonymous whistle blower alerted the company to the relationship, which apparently began in January and was consensual, providing as evidence copies of e-mails between the pair.
The affair itself was not a violation of the policy. Nor did Mr. Stonecipher try to influence the woman's salary or career, Boeing chairman Lewis Platt told reporters, but, "As we explored the circumstances surrounding the affair, we just thought there were some issues of poor judgment that . . . impaired his ability to lead going forward."

I think that's going a bit too far to fire someone over this
