I don't know whether or not I'll dress up for this, but I know Chris intends to. Anyone know of some good places to find Old Western materials for those who don't tend to dress that way? Or does anyone have stuff for other people to use, like an extra hat?

I thought I'd open it up to share costume ideas. When I'm more awake I'll post some pics. from last year of excellent costumes that were seen.

Being that we are in Arizona, I would guess that the Goodwill is a good source for old cowboy hats and such stuff. For a guy a pair of boots, so jeans and a cowboy hat is the start of something great.

For those who are willing to spare no expense in their quest to become a walking icon of Old West fashion, for whom money is no object, who care more about their costume than life itself, please, get help. This is all for fun. However, if Goodwill fails to provide you with the necessary accessories, there are several other stores in the area that can provide that authentic western apparell - for a price. Old Town Scottsdale has quite the cowboy flavor, and I know there is a Western Wear store in Mesa on Country Club just south of Southern. Check local malls for other pieces to complete the ensemble if need be; just remember, all of these ideas will definitely start to add up, and sometimes cheap is just as good for the rugged look of the Old West.

You had me at "spare no expense".

Its true, make a great outfit, join in on the fun. But don't let money stand in your way. Go out put something to gether, and add to it over time. Your first year outfit does not need to be the biggest show stopper in the room. We will be doing this event every year so you can work up to the perfect outfit over a few years.

He's absolutely right; plus, that way you have the joy of a recurring character who can (hopefully) return to defend his title, or who at least can come back for a second attempt to take down last year's champ.

Just a question...one that could be of importance...

Replica guns. If we wish to say, have a nice little holster on our belts with a replica six-shooter in it, would that be frowned upon?

ThePhoenix - May 30, 2006 02:20 PM (GMT)
If it looks like a nice fake Cap gun no problem. If it looks real, they will check it at the door. Can't have you old dogs cheat'n now can we...

Velkyn Velve - May 30, 2006 02:44 PM (GMT)
Cool. I don't have any real revolvers anyway. Not enough fire power. LOL

Tiffany - June 5, 2006 02:01 PM (GMT)
Goodwill and Thrift shops are good for outfitting, I also hear that "Saba's" is a good western outfitter. Some locations include:

In Mesa:
1130 W Southern Ave, Mesa, AZ
(480) 834-1062
AND
6321 E Southern Ave, Mesa, AZ
(480) 981-3730

In Scottsdale:
7254 E Main St, Scottsdale, AZ
(480) 947-7664
7231 E Shea Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ
(480) 948-9201

In Chandler:
67 W Boston St, Chandler, AZ
(480) 963-4496
3270 N Colorado St, Chandler, AZ
(480) 833-0753

I highly recommend calling in advance to make sure this information is accurate, if you live in another city, you can probably look up the nearest location easily enough, I'd think.

Yeah, yeah, cowboy schmowboy. What about Saloon Girl outfits? Any ideas on where to scare those babies up?

teresa - June 11, 2006 04:48 AM (GMT)
If you are lloking for "old west" garb try the Wild West Merchentile on main just weat of Sossaman in Mesa. It is on the north side of the street.
Costumes? Are they required?
I will hopefully have cheep and dirty ideas for those low on funds.

Costumes are part of the mood with this event. Some do it in big style, others simply get the old hat, vest jeans thing. What intel do you have on cheap and dirty ideas for the event?

CajunGoddess - June 19, 2006 04:21 PM (GMT)
Sigh. I just gotta find time to get a costume.

st_gulik - June 19, 2006 10:01 PM (GMT)
My Uncle is in SASS, and I'll ask him about Costumes...he and my aunt have a bunch of stuff....

SASS - Single Action Shooters Society - SCA for the Old West.

Tiffany - June 21, 2006 05:28 PM (GMT)
I just saw a Western Wear store on Southern and Country Club. Just as an fyi for those who live right there (I can name a few).

Velkyn Velve - June 22, 2006 12:17 AM (GMT)
SASS....they the ones that do all the quick draw competitions, right? Not so much with the hitting of each other with the swords of the NERF?

Jo the Schmoe - June 22, 2006 08:09 PM (GMT)
I just need to dig up a duster and a hat. I think I got the Jeans part right...

Oh, and BTW, when do we find out if we are dealing or not? Haven't heard anything...

Guest - June 23, 2006 03:24 AM (GMT)
Hi,
I'm going to the Old West Mercantile for shoes/chemise.
Then I'm going to Mardi Gras Costumes (on Granite reef rd in Scottsdale) to see about leggings, maybe a feather boa, etc.
Mardi Gras both rents out and sells "saloon girl" costumes. At least when I worked there 2 yrs ago...they also rented real leather chaps, hats, holsters, skirts, corsettes, etc....and they had half a wall covered w/nothing but hats for sale.

My fallback plan (all ready but the shoes) is a corset from the Frederick's at the Mills Mall (sale racks are up this week 6/21), a cotton lacy tiered skirt for $8 at the Ross in the same mall, and some old fishnets. The best prices I've found on costume rings are from a shop called "Amuse" in the same mall.

If you want a primo corsette, I keep hearing about a place called "Cici's" in Phoenix. The guy who runs the place is supposed to be a proffessional fitter...but it costs.
Michel :')

Tiffany - June 23, 2006 03:34 PM (GMT)
Jo, I sent you a message about the dealing. :o)

Thanks Michel for the input!

Jo the Schmoe - June 23, 2006 03:43 PM (GMT)
Roger that.

Michel - June 24, 2006 02:58 AM (GMT)
Hi more,
So I called ahead, instead of just driving a million miles and found out that the Wild West Mercantile is online at: www.wildwestmercantile.com (go figure). The lady on the phone says if it's in the store, its online.
Take a look for yourselves. Their corsette prices and sale prices are good...They sell REAL $100 hats, no cheapies. Only one page of "jewelry" that didn't excite me--and none of it was cheap either.
But if you want a full outfit or special goodies, they have all the parts you need for a basic costume, plus a whole section on "gun leathers", spurs, fans, gloves, lace up boots, etc.

*personally, I'm in love with a certain pair of lady's boots, but I am disappointed that the only short drawers they have are size small or extra small, and the only short petticoat is a formal expensive one....then there's the black, back ruffle petticoat on sale.......

ThePhoenix - June 26, 2006 06:30 PM (GMT)
I need to start turning my eyes onto what garb I need to put together, its about 30 days to CON!

Velkyn Velve - June 27, 2006 12:48 AM (GMT)
Don't delay! Get your duds today!

BTW, since lawnmower blades go around in a circle, wouldn't the closest blade of grass technically get cut first?

ThePhoenix - June 27, 2006 03:54 AM (GMT)
At the very least the tallest blade gets chopped down the most, and based on the mulching process is chopped into more bits...

Michel - June 28, 2006 09:41 AM (GMT)
I'll take grass blades for 200, Alex...

According to my highschool teacher, the grass blades along the cutting edge all get whacked at the same time...but the blade is going faster on the outside. (quick and painless, versus slow and bludgeoning?)

:)

ThePhoenix - June 28, 2006 03:41 PM (GMT)
For 100, This part of the grass plant contains 90% of its mass.

Velkyn Velve - June 28, 2006 08:45 PM (GMT)
What is the liver?

Tiffany - July 25, 2006 05:57 PM (GMT)
Damn, I have no interest in being in the tournament but it looks like I'll have to find an old west hat or something just so I can go hang out with the people who are playing.

Seems like it'll be a good environment to hang out in so I'll dress just a bit in order too. We got Chris' outfit almost done; just need his hat and we're good to go.
