I want to open this topic for any interested in discussing Firefly, television show by creator Joss Whedon, or of course you can discuss Serenity, the 2005 movie based on the cancelled tv show.

As for me, my favorite character was Jayne. B) I'm one of a small number, but I always thought he was the most realistic, and badass, of the group.

I tend to be partial to the female characters.

Like Chiana from Farscape....something about bluish-white women...

I know that an officially run Anime room has been scrapped - but is it too late to organize an official Firefly/Serenity room?

For my favorite, I would go with the mechanic or pilot, and the mechanic looks better in a dress...

" I swear by my pretty floral bonnett I will end you!"

Be on the look out for Jayne Cunnin' hats donated for the chairty auction.

Jayne has my heart, River my WTF, and Mal and Inara someplace not safe for family TV!

I heard that they chose not to do more Firefly series in favor of fliming the movie. I liked the movie, a great deal in fact, but I don't know that it was worth it. They had to make a lot in sales in order to do the following two movies and make it a sequel. We'll see what happens. But for just one movie I would have preferred more episodes instead for them to develop River's character, and for people to learn more about Preacher.

They were entirely on a slow path to figuring out the characters and I wanted to see what would developed. Development was rushed with Serenity, I think.

Don't know that I can say we should hold our breath.

The movie had a budget of $39m and brought in $38.8m (world wide) it only netted 25.5m in the states with 10m on opening weekend.

I think the fans came saw it, and left.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see another run at serenity, but I think Joss was a little to agressive with the muggles and should not have killed so many main PCs in a single show, and more so not in there first taste of the event.

I found this poll on a website:
Why didn't 'Serenity' take off at the box office?
36.5% Poor marketing campaign from Universal.
17.1% Failure of original TV show, 'Firefly,' foretold soft grosses.
15.8% Space Western concept inherently had limited appeal.
11.9% Storyline left the uninitiated and non-fans lost.
10.3% Strange title for an action or sci-fi movie
3.2% The show's fans, the Browncoats, didn't see it enough times.
2,683 users polled. (This poll is now closed.)

Chris said that at this point they were relying on dvd sales - still not holding my breath. Even if dvd sales go well, they killed a couple really important people and it wasn't necessary for the wellbeing of the show, imo.

Thanks for the info, phoenix. Good stuff.

I think they sould have killed the doctor over wash at that moment. That way the river would have had no reason to hold back, he was the reason for all of these problems. Not wash, wash was a good old boy pilot that just wanted to play with his wife. He also was the only person to bring morals to the band of rouges. Kaylees voice alone will be lost when saying somthing is not right. jUst seems like killing the doctor would have been a better choice IF a second main cast member had to die.

I didn't even think about it like that, but you're right! But then again, if that were to happen, who would have sex with Kaylee in the end? Would be a.) Wash b.) Mal or c.) River? The answer... coming up! (j/k) Yeah, I don't know what the point of killing Wash was. He really wasn't there to be a badass rogue character like the others, which made him unique and integral to the storyline I think.

I think it may have been pushed on by real world events. Could be the actor wanted out, as he seems to be doing a lot of other movies. He was the robot in I-Robot after all.

Some times I hate it when actors feel they need to change and dump the characters to do other things. I think Arnold Schwarzenegger should have done more Connan films (but he did not want to be stuck as a big brute character for his whole carrer. Pernell Roberts should have not left Bonanza to chase a movie carrer that never took off, etc.

I think (IMHO) that Wash wanted off, and that Shepherd was having heath problem (I think I heard this somewhere) that made it possible that he would not be able to do more shows.

Actually from what I've heard the actor Alan Tudyk was interviewed right before the movie came out and he said he'd love to be able to do more Serenity (He obviously knew he was going to die), but it was interesting anyways....

I think Joss knew there was never a realistic chance for 2 let alone 3 films and he wanted to give Serenity a kick-ass send off...and he did.

ThePhoenix - June 26, 2006 06:42 PM (GMT)
It was a send off... not sure It was the best in view of our American movie watching audience.
