Title: Puzzles!
Description: Of the jigsaw kind.

daniellefaye - May 25, 2006 03:36 PM (GMT)
A jigsaw puzzle room/event would be really cool. It'd be neat if you could swing buying one of the 18,000 piece puzzles. Puzzle hobbyists who haven't beeen able to see it/afford it/justify having it might come to check it out and put it together. There are at least three 18,000 piece puzzles, and again as many 13,200s.

ThePhoenix - May 25, 2006 07:02 PM (GMT)
Do you have a URL to a website with one of these? Also how big is the puzzle physically? A huge communal Puzzle could be fun, but we would need to know how big a table to put it on!

daniellefaye - May 26, 2006 01:40 AM (GMT)
Well, I suggested a dedicated room because they're BIG. I think one is six feet by nine feet. It might be easier for several logistic reasons to do them on the floor.

Puzzles are messy though with people around, my husband is convinced ne'er-do-wells would steal pieces for the sole purpose of being annoying.

Velkyn Velve - May 26, 2006 03:38 AM (GMT)
We could have a "If you steal our pieces, we'll steal yours" policy.

Some of those 3D puzzles would be interesting. Then we could put miniatures around them. Nothing like a horde of Orcs storming the White House.

Jigsaw Jungle and BGamers have a good selection of giant puzzles. The only question is whether it's worth over $100 for the single event - still, it would definitely be wicked cool to have the construction span all four days, if we actually have the event space to spare.

daniellefaye - May 26, 2006 04:00 PM (GMT)
Yeah, they are pretty expensive and big. Just a cool idea, probably not really practical.

ThePhoenix - May 26, 2006 07:28 PM (GMT)
Maybe not at the 18000 piece level which takes up 97 x 75.6 in (over 8x6.25 feet)

Plus as a new event, I think we need to start abit smaller to insure it gains a support and following...

Tiffany - May 27, 2006 08:41 AM (GMT)
I think it would take away from the beauty of Cardhalla as a group project but puzzles that are about 1,000 piece could be in the kids area for older kids or for parents watching the kids it seems.

For a smaller scale event, it might even be better to go smaller still. This might just be because I only complete jigsaw puzzles occaisionally, but I remember puzzles with 500+ pieces taking a good several hours to complete with 2-3 people working on them. Even 1,000 might be a bit large, unless people are dedicating larger chunks of time. If we had puzzles with 500 pieces, or even 250+, people could reasonably expect to complete them during the con, without giving up too much of their schedule. Personally, I think that if we dedicate event space to puzzles, as a new event, it would be cool to have 5-6 puzzles with gaming-oriented pictures complete at the end of the con.

daniellefaye - May 28, 2006 09:46 PM (GMT)
Maybe having more people work on a 500 makes it go slower because I can knock one down by myself in a few hours, no where near what I'd call "a good several." I think minimum for a group of 2 - 3 would be a 750. I won't even buy below 500s for myself as an adult hobbyist.

I do have a couple star wars puzzles that I don't care a whole lot about. Maybe I'll sacrifice them for the cause.

Oh, and you could always auction off the completed puzzles at the end of the con for the people who put them together or something to recoup the cost of them.

MMMM......

Get a puzzle, but take one piece out. Have the puzzle put together before the charity auction and auction off the last piece!

I'm certain some OCD person would fork out for it!

 LOL!

Okay, we have word from on high, there will be some puzzle doing at the Con. We are looking for a Multi-Thousand puzzle. But we do have a "World Hardest Puzzle" which has the same image on the front and the back! the image is rotated 90 and cut once from either side to make it VERY hard to do. Its only 500 but they say its like having 4000 puzzle pieces dropped into a 500 piecer...

Also we have some of the Murder Mystery Who Did It puzzles, with a clue book and the picture that says a 1000 words. I figure this is a good start, and we will go from there.

I recommend the children's area or a specific room area for these puzzles. The 500 pc. one is going to be a huge challenge - I wonder if the attendees will be able to do it before the end of the con, but we certainly have our die hards! (Such as con attendee and puzzle junkee Shilo). Danielle will hopefully give it a good start.

:)

ThePhoenix - May 29, 2006 06:22 AM (GMT)
Right now it will be near the youth area, we figure it may be nice for the Parents that are keeping an eye on there kids to have a little busy work.

Evil Closet Monkey - May 29, 2006 04:19 PM (GMT)
Has anyone given thought to possibly including one of those 3D puzzles in this area? I know people who aren't willing to sit and assemble a picture, but if they see actual construction of some structure rising from its foundation, they're amused for hours. Not to mention the possibility for combining the results with miniature warfare for a few extra kicks.

ThePhoenix - May 29, 2006 04:22 PM (GMT)
I know at one point I had the Puzz-3D version of the Millinum Falcon. If I can find it I plan on putting it out for the people that want to build 3D puzzles.

Puzzles last year turned out to be a big hit. People with kids, people who were waiting for there games to start and people in general who saw puzzles on the table and determined that was where they need to spend three hours all seemed to enjoy them.

I love the two sided puzzle!! That one was pretty cool. I'd like to keep it in the kids area but closer to the location Nicky is using for Alternative Gaming for those who don't play games as much but might enjoy a good distraction.

ThePhoenix - April 10, 2007 01:27 AM (GMT)
The two sided puzzle was solved a few times, Worlds Hardest Puzzle could not stand up to a few gamers!

I've diddled with a sudoku book that had what was basically a magnetic plate that the puzzle you were doing would sit on top and magnetic number tiles.

Dunno if they make larger tabletop ones, but that's kinda cool...reusable sudoku.

ThePhoenix - April 11, 2007 05:23 AM (GMT)
Erasers and penciles...

I think I have a Sudoku puzzle game, with wax pencils and rules that allow more then one player to work out the puzzle. It did not seem like the worlds best event, but if you really love sudoku... i guess it could worl...

Zoot - April 11, 2007 10:40 PM (GMT)
More puzzles. As the worlds harddest puzzle was solved not once or even twice but at least three times within the course of a 4 day event, I will be on the look out for harder and better puzzles.

Tiffany - April 12, 2007 02:33 AM (GMT)
Bookman's has some great puzzle selections and ofcourse are the more basic locations like game stores, Wal-Mart and any toy/kid shop.

:D
