Title: Should I Start An O&g Army?
Backstabba Zog - October 24, 2009 11:40 PM (GMT)
Greeting fellow Greenskins.
I have been interested in starting an O&G army because I just adore their fluff, mini's and units/characters.
I currently have 3 armies.
1. Bretonnians (I love the cavalry and arthurian based fluff)
2. Dark elves (They are my evil and elite army)
3. Tomb Kings (I love the way they play and I am a big fan of egyptian culture)
I have been assessing on whether I get O&G but I have some questions.
1. I know the book is underpowered but is the list a fun and flexible list?
2. Are the models (Gobbo's, Orc boyz and Night Gobbo's) hard to paint to high standard quickly?
cheers.

Hiya! Welcome to Da Warpath! Hope you pick an army you enjoy and have fun with it.
1) Is the list flexible? I would have to say that we have one of the most flexible lists in the entire game! We can go magic heavy or no magic at all! We can go with lots of war machines or none. I've got an All Cavalry list and most people do all Footslogging infantry. We can go with All Goblins, or even all Night Goblins. I really think we have the biggest variety of units in the entire game. I've been playing for years, but I am just now starting to get some of the last few unit types that I don't own yet (herders and savage orc boar boyz).
2) I think there are techniques you can use that can really speed up the painting process. How well do you want to paint them? Take a look at the painting blog and see. Some people spend a long time on a few minis, but other people learn techniques for doing them fast, at the cost of a bit of the quality. There is the Dipping thread, and also Silver's use of washes. There is someone who also started to use washes on Bleached Bone for skin to get some really good results.
If you want know if it will be fun to play, I say what is your local area like? If you play with a lot of super competitive folk with no composition scores, you might be more frustrated than otherwise.

I yes I should have mentioned. My gaming club is friendly game orintated. Even when we do tournaments we still like to have a bit of fun in the games.
I am mainly worried about what people will think if I use things like common gobbo's, Blorcs, gobbo warbosses etc. I know they are not very effective but I really love the models and the fluff of them. Would people look down on me for using these units?
cheers.

I don't think anyone will look down on you for using Greenskins. The problem with OnG is that they just aren't reliable. When they win, they win big. When they lose, they can lose spectacularly. Animosity can ruin the game for you and it can help you out. Miscasts are the most harsh of any magic user. We have terrible leadership scores. I've lost games when my Warlord and his unit failed the Terror test on the last round to hit the flank of the big enemy unit, but instead fled due to it being Terror and losing the game. This happens. When you look at the armies that are on the top of the lists, they are either all Immune to Psychology (Demons and VC) or have a high leadership (Dark Elves and Lizardmen). These armies reliably do what you expect them to do.
I've had crushing victories with my Greenskins and I would say that this summer I've won more games than I've lost. It's just something that if the dice are against you, you have so many chances to fall behind the 8-ball.

Hi there,
1) I personnally think that our army book is the most flexible and the divesified than any other army which can be good and bad. The good is that ive been playing OnG for about 6 years now and ive never gotten bored playing them. At this moment im playing an all goblin army, and im having a blast. My bro plays VC and he's actually starting an empire army now just becuase the VC army is very one dimensional. The bad is that because the army is so diversified, it might cost a lot more money than others do if you wish to try different types of army lists and so on.
2)It depends on the painting, if you do an all goblin army, well then you're looking at painting a horde army...which can take a while but doesnt have to. Look at night goblins, i first prime them black and first paint their skin snot green. Then i hilight it goblin green (this is done quickly since not much skin is exposed). For their cloaks i just do a light drybrush of shadow grey which actually looks beautiful. Shields are sunburst yellow with chestnut ink applied on top and all you have after is weapon, teeth and eyes, and your base. It goes really quickly that i usually do 40 at a time. Dont get me wrong, there are other units that take a lot longer but that is the norm even with other armies
Oh and dont worry about ur friends, i think they will appreciate how unpredictable OnG's really are. As fun as it is for you to play them, it's also a blast for them.
There's also a new brigade box you can check out on one of the threads, great box to help you start out if you're interested

First of all welcome
On behalf of myself and the rest of the Moderation Team, I would like to welcome you to Da-Warpath. You'll find a lot of helpful and friendly people, and almost any rule question you have can be probably be answered by someone here, and everyone is always happy to hear your opinion.
If you have any problems or any further questions, feel free to PM myself or one of the other Mods. We are always happy to answer any questions about the forum that you may have.
1) OnG are a flexible army, in my club there are only 2 real OnG players left but me and the the other one always have different lists, he prefers to field orc heavy army and I prefer goblin armies most of the time. Also we have lots of different units types and you will find yourself sometimes cursing that you don't have more specials cause you can't take al the coolstuff you want. But they are very fun. Also common gobbos and goblin warbosses can be very effective. I use my common gobbos always with light armour and shields for a 4+ save and recently also with short bows. Okay they then cost 5 points but the are a very flexible unit, and with the goblin warbosses you can make some very cool combo's.
2) For painting that is more up to what you want, I know a guy in my area who did do about 7 hours on a single rank and file orcs, and 3 hours for a single gobbo. It fastend up a little since he was getting used to it but still. I did a unit in that time. His unit looked much better up close but mine did also look above table top standard so it all depends on what you want and how good you are at painting.
