Title: Your Awesome Piratez
Description: How did you do it?
Pointy-Eared Git - March 6, 2006 05:17 AM (GMT)
Hey there guys!
Let me firstly say that the work you all did is absolutely amazing, and you truly deserve a pat on the back, and a free round of Lard Tub's brew!
What Im here aboot is just to get a brief description of how you managed to convert & paint (mostly convert) your awesome Pirate list models. If you could pretty please give the name of your conversion (I can find the pic elsewhere, just say 'sloory's ocean troll' or whatever) and a brief description in this thread so I can put it in the P&H section of the Piratez Army Book then I would be very appreciative, and you're work will be famous :P.
Thanks a heap guys, without this it wouldnt be the same!

Ok then, what shall we call him. I guess he'd be fitting for the job of a BSB or just a Standard Bearer. The conversion is fairly simple. The banner is taken from the Orc chariot and was pinned to a spear that had it's spearhead removed. The coins on the base are pieces of Green stuff as is the hat. His base was made from Milliput, basically the same stuff as GS but with a few differences.
The painting was also fairly simple. The skin is DA Green and highlights were made by adding Bleached Bone. I used fairly lot of shades of Brown to paint him. The wood parts are Scorched Brown - Dark Flesh - Bestial Brown - Bubonic Brown. His jacket was painted with Dark Flesh and Bleached Bone was added for highlights. That's about it.

G'day
Ocean Troll
ok hmm first.....
I cut the river troll in half through his guts! then i pinned a piece of wire in between the too half to the size that i wanted to extend it.
I did the same thing to the head with it extended about 10mm out.
I then filled the gaps with greenstuff and once dry i built up the layers with scales, gills and added a fin to his back.(is this too brief?)
Painting the model was done with a black undercoat, then a base coat of 3rd codex grey, 3rd shadow grey, 3rd chaos black.
Codex grey was then added with each succesful highlight and finally bleached bone was added for the final highlight.
The scales where base coated in schorched brown, the drybrushed with snakebite leather, then in beubonic brown, then in bleached bone.
is this too much or too little??

Ad'mrul Kurgan Grimjaw:

I decided to leave my Warboss whole, so many other Boyz in my Pirate army have hands, eyes and legs missing I thought one of them should be complete!
The model is based on a 40K Ork Nob, with his bullets and pistols cliped off.
His sword (and the right hand holding it) are from the Ogre Kingdom Bulls plastics, as is his pony tail (on the left of his head). His dreadlocks with coins and teeth (on his right) are from the plastic Beastmen musician. His pistols are from the Empire malitia plastics (I had to carve off the human hands holding them). His water flask is from the Soldiers of the Empire sprue. His left arm is from the Orc command sprue.
His coat-tails, bandana, ring, pouch, pistol-straps and his beard are all made with greenstuff.
The paint-job is fairly close to my normal standard, though I did take a little longer on him than the rank and file Orcs normally get :D
And I made sure he had lots of tatoos of fish, anchors and compasses. ;)

-I'm gonna stick the url here anyways :) -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/keb...-inte-dag-2.jpgMy, erhm...'spose it's a deckhand, right?
Could possibly pass off as a Black Orc Swashbuckler (or whatever they're called :P ) - I mean, save for any warpaint he has pretty dark skin (a goblin green tone being the final highlight), is taller than your average orc (I've repositioned the fot and pegleg aswell as pinned the body and filled the gap with GS - so he do gain a milimetre or two ^_^) and (maybe, I'm not sure) "swishy" sword (tried to make a cutlass).
Maybe I could paint some warpaint and you could use it?
Anyways, you don't have to include that in the armybook ;)
All the parts are from the Orc Boyz Box. I chose parts which didn't have that much armour - trying to get a more neutral base to work on.
I repositoned the foot, pinned it to the base, which was made out of a layer of greens stuff and cut into the pattern of wooden boards, made the sculpted pegleg (with the base of a pin, then a green stuff coat, which was slightly thicker around the leg part and slightly thiner on the end, and pattern made by just using a toothpick at random) so that he would gain a more upright stance.
The torso is pinned to follow the upright stance and extend the shirt.
The neck was cut down to size and had the head, which had gotten an eyepatch, bandana and knot made out of green stuff, and pinned to it.
Last thing I did to the model before painting it, and gluing the left arm, was cutting the choppa to look more like a cutlass and pinning the arm so that it was in a upright position. Then I covered the large gap with green stuff, trying to make it look like muscles.
The skin is painted with a base of Dark Angel Green mixed with Chaos Black. From there I mixed it with a lighter green untill I got almost the Goblin Green tone.
The wood (pommel, pegleg and base) is done with a base of 50/50 Scorched Brown and Chaos Black, followed by a highlight of Scorched Brown and mixed up to Bestial Brown and finally Snakebite Leather.
The bracelets were done with Dark Flesh, to get a dark, leather look.
The shirt was painted with a mix of Codex Grey, a little Shadow Grey and some Bestial Brown - getting a result pretty close to Kommando Khaki, to give that Piraty look

This is a really intresting topic, I will make use of it when I will make my first pirates :), and that is not so far in the future.

Thats the idea WGG, it will be in the book so you can just browse through your printed copy and see how to convert/paint up a pirate army of your own!

Spotty & Hootch:
These two are current-range 40k Grot Artillery Crew. The only conversion needed was Hootch had a rather modern looking pipe club in his belt on his back. This was replaced with a dagger.
All the bases use were sanded down and painted with the wood grain effect. the clumps of mold/vegetation is just sand painted green. My intent was to make the bases look somewhat vague, so it could be the deck of a ship, a muddy river bank, or perhaps plowed fields, so the models don't look too out of place no matter where they are. I'm not sure how effective the end result was, though...
Smeek:
Smeek is an old 40k Gretchen. His original shotgun was removed and replaced with another dagger, but other than that there were no changes.
Stabby McCreedy:
Stabby was an old Orc Bolt Thrower Crew. He was given two short swords from my bitz box in his empty hands. His helmet also had to be sawed off and a bandada added to his head with green stuff. The sides of the helmet were ground off with a Dremel tool. On one side the gouge was hidden by the knot of his bandana, but the other side was carefully filed to look more like the side of his face.
Lt. Grogreef:
Grogreek is an old 40k Ork Freebooter. The original model used rather stringy plastic arms, so I replaced these with the burlier Gorkamorka plastic arms. The right hand's weapon was removed and replaced with an Empire Militia sword. The left hand was removed entirely and replaced with the original plastic Ork hand, which was cupped to hold a gun. This worked to hold up a barrel from the Empire Artillery Sprue, although the model's shoulder had to be ground down to make it look a bit more natural.
A small note about the barrel - it has no top. I had to create the other end if I didn't want the thing to look empty. I took a plactic shield with a wooden side and stuck it on the end of my Dremel (so it would spin like a bit). I then ground the shield down to the right size on a rough chunk of sandpaper. This created a perfectly round piece of plastic wood that I could pop right into the barrel.
Bilgerot da Bold:
Another old 40k Freebooter, Bilgerot had a lot of modern pieces that had to be removed. The big grenade around his neck was removed and replaced with a White Wolf medallion, his pistol butt was removed from it's holster and replaced with the handle of a dagger to make a sheath, and his back plate was ground down and hidden with green stuff. He also got Gorkamorka arms along with a Goblin sword and an old Black Orc axe.

Briney da Deep:
This has been the most complex conversion so far. Briney started as a very old Marauder Orc Shaman Wyvern Rider. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what a Shaman in an Orc Pirate Fleet would be like, and I finally settled on the idea that they would act as navigators. So, with that in mind, I added as many navigator type bits as I could find: a scroll and a book from the Mordheim Accessory Sprue (sea charts and treasure maps), a compass to hang from the staff made from a plactic Ork 40k gunsight and a small clipping of plasticard, etc.
At about this time I started getting the idea that this was a Shaman who came upon a treasure map and set out to follow it, but got a little lost and ended up spending too much time marooned on a deserted island. So I sculpted on some tattered pants and gave him a long beard out of green stuff. I made a bottle (good fer drinkin' and sendin' messages) out of half a plastic rod and some green stuff and stuck it on his belt with the book, strapped on by a little piece of twine (which helped hide the join between plastic rod and green stuff). His staff got some extras like a feather from the High Elf plastic set and some skulls from the Goblin Wolf Chariot chains.
Last, Briney needed some animal friends. I stuck a glob of green stuff onto the top of his staff and scored it to make it look like a nest. To this I added a bird from the old metal standard from the Skeleton Regiment box. I also decided to sculpt from scratch a starfish and a crab. This was easier than I thought it would be. I stuck two globs of green stuff onto a bit of plastic from a blister pack and just cut the details out from them. After they were dry I attached them to Briney's shoulder and beard and he's done.

Kap`n Krunk:
Actually my all-time favourite conversion, I always do a lot of converting where I can but this one is something special me-thinks. Made from the Orc Regiment box and some small strips f GS (for the scars) he`s one impressive dude me-thinks.
The helmet was improved by adding the horns from the banner pole as well as the jaws on the side and it is this helmet that gives him his vicious appaerance.
Luvverly all in all
da Quartah Mastah:
Again using pieces from Mordheim in the chest he carries on the shoulder, the model himself are made from the Ārd Boyz set. For this guy I took the most beaten up torso since I gathered that he would be a focal point during a battle, so he looks kinda beaten and bleeding but still ready for a fight. Had to use GS to bulk out the arm holding the chest beacuse of the large gap when I found the positioning I wanted.
Biko the Goblin Merchant Lord:
Made entirely from left-overs. The body and arms are from an Empire Mordheimer, while the lower-body is from a Skaven. Then painted to a crisp and clean style (at least as far as I can judge) to make him stand out from the others. He`s also the only pirate I have that hasn`t got any blood on his weapon, look in the fluff for further explanation ;)
Bam-Bam da Gunna Boss:
Made from the Ārd Boyz set as with the swivel gunners. Only for Bam I reserved the metal body parts to make him stand out from the swivellers. Also gave him a horned helmet as this is a theme I`m running with all my characters (avatar explains it). The brace of pistols are made from the smaller guns from the Ārd Boyz (sluggas?). Heavily modified to look more fantasy-like and based on the same way I built my swivel guns. Still unsure though if it looks good enough...but regular pistols as from Mordheim just doesn`t work for an Orc-sized model.
Swivel Gunners:
Made entirely from the Ārd Boyz box from 40k. The guns are heavily modified version of the shootas. With added choppa to the swivel gun since there simply isn`t anywhere else to put it on the model.
I made a bandana(?) and beard out of GS on both of them, this was mainly to make them stand out some more and make them look older and more experienced. Also used GS to make ropes, this was to tidy up the link between the choppa and the gun.
Slasha-Dasha, First Mate, Deck Hands:
Slasha is a fairly easy conversion. He`s pretty much straight from the box with some minor conversions. The hat and the rifle is from the Mordheim starter set, and it`s the hat that puts Dasha right after Slasha. Vain fellow he is
That`s why he`s the only one with a very different clothing style than the others, sporting a fairly bright red with the yellowish hat and of course no scars on this pretty boy.
I also bulked out his stomach with some GS and made a beard for as well with GS.

Wyrdtoof Da Shaman
Really this fella is just a careful choice of plastic bitz. The body from the Orc Command sprue with no shirt. The "Kilt" legs and "Bad Moon Hat" Head, left arm and the "spare" Choppa are all from the Orc Boyz Sprue.
The staff is a spear with the point clipped off, leaving just the Orcy glyph part.
His left arm is from the 40K Ork sprue (for holding a shoota) with an Orc Skull glued into the hand.
The cloak is from the Goblin sprue and his bags and pouches are from a veriety of sources - mainly Goblin sprue arrow quivers, with the arrows clipped off.
The paint job is my "standard": Start with Dark Angels Green, Snot Green, Scorpion Green for skin (with tattoos in black).
His gear is painted with a veriety of browns then ink-washed and highlighted with the original brown (once the ink is dry)! Same goes for weapons: Metallic paint (Dwarf Bronze and Boltgun Metal), brown ink and a Highlight.
Teef and skull are painted Snakebite Leather, and highlighted Bleach Bone.
