Title: Japanese
Description: wasn't sure where to put this, but...
Talyn - January 23, 2007 02:03 AM (GMT)
yeah... so since designers like to put 'asian' on their sigs, they might as well know what's going on it. (I've seen way too many sigs with nonsense... so Imma teach you guys before I vanish into OBSCURity again (haha, puns))
First, there are two basic alphabets in japanese. They are called Hiragana and Katakana. Then there's kanji which is complicated....but....
Katakana is what you use phonetically (for foreign words).
This is the katakana alphabet table:
please, for the love of anything, refer to this table.

The 'a' is not pronounced 'A,' but more like AH.
E is pronounced Eh.
I is pronounced E
if I were to write 'talyn gray' it would be
ta-ri-n gu-re-i
graphics:
gu-rah-fi-ku-su
*the fi is written with a Fu and a small 'i' next to it.
Also, in japanese, R=L and L=R it's the same sound.
Also, there're a few more grammatical rules and all that stuff that I'm not going to go over. And things I say may not always be correct... so yeah... just wanted to give you guys SOME idea of what you're putting on your sigs.
rawr. End lesson.

Katakana is what you use phonetically. |
not to sound like a smart ass or anything, but both hiragana and katakana are pronounced phonetically, the difference is that katakana is used for foreign words which have been adapted to japanese, whereas hiragana is used for actual japanese words.... when you think about it..... something like half their language is from other languages.... mostly chinese and english......
well, either way, great tut, helps me remember my time in high school japanese :o
