Title: VM-38 Advanced Missile Targeting and Delivery Syst

Solaris - January 24, 2006 08:09 PM (GMT)
Designation: VM-38
Zoid(s) For: Storm Sworder, Raynos, Reddler, Storch
Weapons Added: Twin 4-Shot Air-to-Air Shrapnel Missile Pods, Twin Air-to-Surface 2-Shot Missile Pods, Dual Heavy Missile Pods, Dual Cruise Missiles
Equipment Added: Enhanced Targeting Dish
Cost: 50,000

A rather expensive modification, this setup turns those agile beasts of the sky into heavily armed birds with enough explosives to take out most opponents with ease. All of the missiles except the Cruise Missiles track down the opponent via standard IR sensors, but they also use 3D Radar feeds from the targeting dish to make sure that these missiles have excellent accuracy and fast lock-on times. Mounted on the underbelly of the equipped Zoid, the Enhanced Targeting Dish provides a standard 3D radar equal to that of the Storch, and is capable of targeting two Zoids at a time. The Raynos does not mount this dish, as it would impede the Anti-Ground bomb it carries, and the Electron Dish it already uses it plenty good enough.

The main draw of this modification is of course the vast array of missiles. Eighteen to be exact. Mounted near the base of each wing, where it connects to the body, is a Heavy Missile Pod, loaded up with two large missiles. They are multi-purpose, sporting a detachable second-stage booster that allows them to be used equally well against ground and air targets, and each missile has automatic maneuvering vanes that allow it to turn sharply even at great speeds. Each missile carries a payload equal to three standard missiles, and they can be fired at the same time.

Halfway along each wing, two pods rest side-by-side, the Air-to-Air Shrapnel pod and the Air-to-Surface pod. The AtA pod is loaded up with four missiles that are very similar to the shrapnel missiles of the modular AtA missile pod, which cannot be mounted while this modification is in use. The only difference is the increased number of missiles and the different manner of locking onto the target. The second pod on the wing is a simple two-shot pod loaded up with air-to-surface missiles that drop most of the distance to the ground before firing up, accelerating at a rate roughly equal to a normal surface-to-surface missile.

Finally, there are two big missiles that mount onto the back of the Zoid, pretty much in the same place as the Heavy Missile Pods except on the top part of the wing. These are the Cruise Missiles, which are more like cousins to the TVM Ballistic missiles than any normal missile. These Cruise Missiles have a multi-mile range, tracking down a coordinate position, not any specific Zoid. Each missile packs the firepower of six normal missiles, and have a twenty meter explosive radius, and they have afterburners that allow them to traverse most normal battlefields in less than a second, so they can actually be quite hard to avoid. Unlike the Ballistic missiles, these do not require a turn to lock, and both can be fired upon at the same time. The Redler pilots may opt not to mount these two missiles in favour of the CP-09 Booster Cannon, if it catches the pilots' fancy.

So what are the downsides to this great set of missiles? Firstly, due to the increased weight of the Zoid, the equipped Zoid experiences a speed drop of around Mach 0.5, and secondly, due to the close placement of the Heavy Missile Pods and the Cruise Missiles to the body, maneuverability is hampered somewhat. They equipped Zoid is not reduced to a lumbering beast, nor the agility of a Pteras, but there will be a drop that the more agile normal variants of these Zoids may be able to take advantage of.
