When Matthew was browsing the list of Zoids available for ZBC usage, he noticed something striking. Many of the popular Zoids had large amounts of mods, the Shield Liger topping out at seventeen, whilst some of the less favoured Zoids had no modifications at all. Finding this a little unfair, Matthew contacted his engineer friends with some ideas. The first modification to be created by Matt’s team for the purpose of support for the obscure Zoids was this, the Paladin Unit.

By removing the Ion Boosters from the Guntiger’s back, Matthew found enough space to install a state-of-the-art power generator that supplemented the power the Ion Boosters would have used with its own source of energy. This small box is as armoured as the rest of the Guntiger, and mounted on the sides of this squat box are two guns. These two guns are dual-barrelled 30mm Laser Repeaters, each capable of firing eight shots per second per barrel, for 32 laser pulses per second in total. Being lasers, they are highly accurate and are mounted on struts that allow them to rotate 180 degrees horizontally, making them able to shoot behind the Guntiger, or even to be used as anti-aircraft weapons.

The Paladin Unit has a second function, which is that it allows the Guntiger to generate an omnidirectional energy shield roughly half the strength of a normal e-shield. This shield is more suited to defending against energy beams, as explosives and projectiles inflict much more severe drain on the power supply for the shield. The e-shield can remain functional for four rounds before shorting out, unable to be used again that battle. If the shield is knocked out in any fashion, it will not recuperate again before the end of the battle.
