Guylos EmpireFormal Name: Empire of Guylos and Subject Nations
Government: Parliamentary Monarchy
Capitol: Guygalos, Guylos
Language: English, Cockney English
The Guylos Empire is a notedly militaristic nation with a long history of conquest. Originally little more than hardened barbarians living on Nyx's subarctic wastes, they swept southward and claimed the northern portions of the Western Continent as their own. It was the Guylos's northern-bred tenacity and guts that won their war against the Zenebas Empire and kept them intact longer than any other nation on Zi. They are a proud and stoic people, as well as being the most diverse thanks to their frequent conquests and the invasions Europa has suffered, both before and after the Guylos Empire.
The Empire is divided into five different kingdoms and three protectorates. The capitol is located in the Guylos kingdom, the northernmost landmass on Europa. To the east of it is Berama, with the old Zenebas capitol of Beruhama located on the coast. To the south of those, listed from southeast to northwest, are the kingdoms of Elemia, Zenab, and Sadun. The protectorates include the Nyx colony of Dustoff Point, the island in the Deldaros Ocean known as Dorfar, and the military installations on the Eastern Continent.
The bulk of the people in the Empire are descended of caucasian settlers from southern Europe and North America. Elemia has a strong population of Arab-descendents, whereas Zenab and Sadun tend more towards mongoloid blood. The Zenabs and Saduns are believed to be related to the Trillstani.
Nyx is a chill wasteland, often shrouded in raging blizzards and low-hanging clouds. It has little real value, save as a handy stopover around the Daras Triangle. Dustoff Point is the major port city there, with roughly fifteen hundred people living there year-round.
Europa, on the other hand, has a much wider variety of terrain. Only a small percentage of it is farmland, with the majority of the rest of it given over to temperate wilderness. Lush jungles, winding rivers, rolling hills, and even a few mountain chains dot the land. It gets dryer in the south, slowly turning to savannah and finally outright desert in Elemia. As most of it is on the equator, the majority of Europa is tropical. The Andar-Deldaros Current flows along the eastern coastline, providing a moderating affect that helps to cool the northern coastal areas and warm the southern coastal areas.
Helic RepublicFormal Name: New Helic Republic
Government: Constitution-based Federal Republic
Capitol: New Helic City
Language: English
The Helic Republic has its roots in the Zenebas Empire. As the Wind Dynasty consolidated power over the Western Continent, a trickle of refugees from the conquered kingdoms and settlers sent by later generations founded colonies on the vast expanse of Delpoi, the Central Continent. These people tend towards northern European stock, including many of the same Germanic tribe that gave birth to Guylos.
Originally, the Republic was considered a colony of the Empire. It soon revolted under the leadership of General Helic, quickly gaining its independence in the distant past. Helic set up a provisional military government that held power for over twenty years before dying of 'natural causes.' His son established a more republican government, drawing up a constitution. Helic II won the first elections, and led his new nation through the early years. The Republic expanded slowly, starting on the western coast and slowly moving east. They had a land of bitter winters, much colder than they were used to back home on Europa, but also of untold bountiful natural resources. Progress was rapid, and gave birth to a land of the working middle class.
The Republic favors simplistic tactics. As a nation and as a people, they live by the maxim of "Keep it simple, stupid." They favor economical designs, and like to stick with what works. Where the Empire went for spiffy new technological designs, the Republic goes for the tactic of "m0r3 p0w3r."
And it works.
AthensFormal Name: Sovereign City-State of Athens
Government: Oligarchy
Capitol: Athens
Language: English, Engrish, regional dialects
Athens is a city of many levels, situated on the western coast of the Eastern Continent. Run by a group of the mercantile aristocracy, it is composed of people from all over Zi. The front it presents to the world is that of a tourist trap, a place catering to the whims of the traveler from Delpoi or Europa. With a balmy climate and lush rain forests bordering it, Athens can pull it off.
However, there is a side of Athens the tourists never see. The slums to the west of town set a stark contrast to the 'Royal Quarter' in the heart of the city. The slums are like the worst depictions of inner city life on Earth. Ironically, they're on the outskirts of the city.
The Athenian Institute of Design and Technology is on the southwest portion of the city. Originally it was a Guylos research outpost, one that predated the city by a good two or three years. In the beginning, the city was a mile or two away from the Institute. Athens has grown in the past fifty years, and the Institute with it.
To the south of Athens is the bayou, where the Cajuns live. They live a slow, leisurely life that creates a unique flavor. They tend to not like tourists, and are usually Trillstani.
The Trillstani are a very polite people. A blend of Asian and Hispanic ancestry lends them a unique and exotic look while a claim of Ancient Zoidian blood gives them a certain mystique. Following the Invasion of the thirties, the Trillstani are all but extinct. Those that survive are Cajuns or slum-dwellers, with very few leaving the cycle of poverty they find themselves in. The phrase 'separate and inequal' describes their situation in Athens quite eloquently, but there are small towns and villages of Trillstani survivors living in the trackless wilderness of Cronus's dense jungles.
