This is a big gun. A very big gun. It was once described as the overgrown lovechild between the Republic’s supercannon and the Cannon Tortoise’s artillery cannon. A massive artillery cannon nearly eighteen meters long and weighing about forty-three tons, it utilizes a gauss firing mechanism to propel 450mm shells across a battlefield. The recoil is catastrophic, the recharge and reload time roughly thirty seconds total, and the impact enough to level a city block. The shell is a steel jacket surrounding alternating layers of depleted uranium grapeshot mixed with explosives and layers of impact explosive, the cone a magnesium spike surrounded by a primer explosive. It is effectively a rather large, three-ton bomb. The cannon carries three shells in a revolver-style loader.
It’s always fun to play with a gun whose ammunition is a sizeable percentage of its weight.
The rig for the cannon requires heavy modification to the zoid, though surprisingly little work is done to the chassis. On the Gordos, the cannon anchors to the exposed structure on the sides and rear hips, with the barrel attached to a rigging linked to both of the hardpoints the supercannons normally mount on. The Red Horn’s rig removes all of the back-mounted weaponry and hooks up to the Horn’s flanks, with the cannon mounted on the base of the tail and facing forwards. The rig has two hardpoints to either side of the main carriage. The hardpoints can mount a variety of weaponry normally mounted on the base hardpoints. Because of the expense, the cannon’s mount is amazingly durable and armored with thick slabs of the same material as the Elephander in order to protect the investment. This adds an additional thirty tons onto the weight.
The Long Tom also comes with a targeting computer that works with the onboard sensors and calculates out the shell’s trajectory. The computer enables the weapon to reliably fire and hit targets up to forty kilometers away.
