The BESAD Autocannon is an advanced design to replace aging weaponry, originally built in Imperial factories and later . Its placement was not willy-nilly, however; it had stringent requirements. The weapons it replaced had to be energy-based and had to require a large amount of energy -- or, at least, the zoid had to be able to supply extra energy. The BESAD AC usually requires much less energy than the weapon it replaces, as the BESAD AC is a shell-based rotary autocannon. It fires high-velocity high-density 20mm shells with a high rate of fire, exceeding just about every other weapon out there in ability to lay out bullets. This comes at a price, however. The weapon is unreliable for long durations, good for quick bursts of fire. Unlike most such weapons, the BESAD AC does not experience a spray effect. The barrels are calibrated to fire at a single point two hundred meters away. The real neat bit about these weapons, though, is what the barrels do to the shells as they leave. They impart a bit of an electrostatic charge to the shells, rendering them somewhat more effective against shields than ordinary shells. The explosive capacity of the shells is somewhat reduced, being about half that of an ordinary cannon shell of the same caliber.
The BESAD Autocannon does have its limitations. It is incapable of sustained bursts of fire – and ‘sustained’ means ‘longer than a couple of seconds’. Its recoil is such that the Gorgolauncher and Command Wolf have to put down anchors, and the Malder has to engage its reverse magnessor. The shells also lose their electrostatic charge fairly swiftly, fading rapidly after reaching the two hundred meter mark. After about two hundred meters’ distance the BESAD Autocannon may as well be a somewhat more powerful 20mm autocannon.
