Title: Misplaced meds
Description: House's drug use this ep.
rtlemurs - March 2, 2005 01:37 PM (GMT)
Okay. I slept on it and I still can't figure out what the deal was with the hunt for that one pill. Great line by the way when he found it but that's beside the point.
What, does he just leave them lying around? That was just so out of the blue and weird. Again it makes me wonder about the sequence they are being shown in.
Plus he seemed to be poppin' alot more this episode. I know that has varied but it was more noticable this show. Kind of like in the Pilot.
And was it me or was he sucking on them like mints instead of swallowing?!
Weird with a capitol EIRD?!
TelegramSam - March 2, 2005 02:16 PM (GMT)
Yea, I noticed the chewing/sucking thing too. I hope it doesn't become a habit with him.
Chewing/grinding up pills is a way to increase/speed up their effect, but before anyone tries it let me warn you it's a BAD idea, you can overdose on some meds that way, especially ones that are supposed to be time-released.
No problem my arse. He may not have a problem yet, but he's developing one in a hurry if he's doing stuff like that.
rtlemurs - March 2, 2005 02:46 PM (GMT)
Hmmm interesting, I didn't know that. Makes a little more sense now as far as the sucking but that just furthers that whole sequence thing.
I know they are being shown out of production order but even the production order doesn't fit. It seems like this one should have been the episode directly before Detox.
And the lost pill thing is weird. He just doesn't seem like he'd leave them laying around like that unless his trusty bottle was out and he hides little backups around just in case.
Even then I'd think he'd have it in a container of some type and hidden in a better place than under some papers on his table.?!
TelegramSam - March 2, 2005 02:53 PM (GMT)
I think somebody (Wilson maybe?) referenced House getting out of clinic duty. I'm not entirely convinced that this wasn't supposed to be the episode immediately following Detox.
rtlemurs - March 2, 2005 04:13 PM (GMT)
Mmmm Intersting, I can see that too.
Other than the lost pill thing. I'd think after all that he went through in Detox he'd keep better track of his meds.
pillpopdoc - March 2, 2005 06:29 PM (GMT)
That pill looked really big for a vicodin tablet. Looked like a Chicklet. Maybe he's in so much pain, he's taking 'horse pills' now.
Pooor House. :(
Love you all!

I hadn't noticed the size ;) Does size matter? :o
I'll have to look again. Still a very weird scene.
ambragail - March 2, 2005 07:54 PM (GMT)
I got the impression he was doing what alot of addicts do--hiding "back-ups" of his stash in case he needed them. It would make him feel more comfortable knowing there was always something there, even if he couldn't see it. I would bet he went back later and replaced the pill with a new one.
Taruia - March 2, 2005 07:57 PM (GMT)
I got the feeling that he was messing with Cuddy. I think it was one of his "let's see how much I can piss off Cuddy," moments, but I have to watch it again before I can tell for sure.
Mad_Zebra - March 2, 2005 08:56 PM (GMT)
Wilson's comment was weird, about getting out of clinic duty. Since in Sports Medicine he had to clinic duty yet just did it in the lobby. I'm confuzzled. Also I think House is getting too friendly with his meds, he's starting to talk to them.
twixter - March 2, 2005 09:20 PM (GMT)
I agree with TelegramSam. I think Cursed was intended to come after Detox.
Remember in Detox where Foreman gives House the bottle of Vicodin, and tells him to take his pills? Then House opens the bottle, takes out one pill, and just sits gazing at it. I think *that* pill is the one he's hunting for at the beginning of Cursed.
Auditrix - March 2, 2005 09:21 PM (GMT)
House may have just pocketed the pill in his cheek because he was getting ready to speak to Cuddy and didn't want to take the time out to swallow.
Another retrofitted explanation: House was in his office getting ready to take a pill when Cuddy interrupted him. He dropped the pill as she started following him around with the chart. After he got what he wanted from the kitchenette, he started shuffling papers looking for the dropped pill, both because he was looking for it and because of the great annoy-Cuddy factor.
He was certainly calm about it :)
I dunno. That scene didn't make much sense to me either. I think the whole point of the scene was to lead up to that line.

"Also I think House is getting too friendly with his meds, he's starting to talk to them."
When he dresses them up in party hats, starts giving them 'pet' names and takes them on 'play dates' with tabs of Zoloft and Paxil, I'll start to worry. ;)
No matter what the reasoning behind it, those were funny lines... LOL  ;) Yeah, it could have been partly to annoy Cuddy, since House lives for those opportunities. LOL
Hugs,
Sanlin

Aud. I like your explination, that he lost it when he was talking to someone...heh heh, but those lines! Squee!
ambragail - March 2, 2005 10:18 PM (GMT)
I assumed that he had gotten out of clinic duty because Cuddy wanted him full-time on the kid's case because the father was a major financial contributor to the hospital. The fact that the father was so ticked off that the ducklings were handling the case rather House himself I felt supported that;Cuddy probably assured the dad that House would be handling the case personally.
Benj - March 2, 2005 10:34 PM (GMT)
I reckon it was a total "how much will this get Cuddy" ploy.
I would have believed he had just mislaid his pills if he had searched around his desk or his own office- but he was in the kitchen, in the cutlery draw, tea/coffee cans. There is no way he would have left his pills in the communal kitchen. He was playing Cuddy, particularly after his Detox triumph, and "for the big finish" he was talking to his pills- just to mazimise her horror. And it seemed to work- because although she was most interested in getting him on the case- her look right after he did the "were you scared?- its okay you're home now" line was classic.
I totally agree he probably keeps a couple of pills hidden- which will be far too important to him to forget- which he knew all along.
Just my take!

Oh, I like that idea. That's what I'm sticking with, until I hear whether this episode becomes before or after Detox.

Wonder if it was also to see how badly she wanted him to take the case?

With all this conjecture running around in my head I've got to go rewatch it and see what fits.
So far I like the 'Cuddy Annoyance' argument best.
Still curious about the sucking thing. It just started out of nowhere and he did it all episode so it wasn't just a push it to the side while I talk thing.
So depending on where this falls in the House Series timeline make it more or less interesting.?
Auditrix - March 3, 2005 07:24 PM (GMT)
Interesting -- I had thought at first this would fall after "Detox" but instead it falls before. Here's the episodes listed in order of production code:
Pilot
Occam's Razor
Socratic Method
Maternity
Paternity
Damned if You Do
Fidelity
Poison
Sports Medicine
Cursed
DNR
Histories
Detox
Control
I like ambragail's idea that House got out of clinic duty to work on the case, and it's consistent with the idea that the Ducks got off clinic as well. And I like Benj's read that House was just playing Cuddy when he was searching in the kitchen. I don't think having this coming before Detox would affect that reading. I also like that idea of his having a hidden stash, though given how testy he gets when the clinic doesn't cough up the drugs quickly enough, he may not be good about maintaining it.
Interesting parallels between this opening and the opening of Detox. In this one, House is searching for meds, but he's pretty calm about it, keeping his sense of humor, and is still paying attention to Cuddy. That sucking on the pill might be a clue, though, that trouble's brewing.
In Detox we've got the same scene -- House looking for Vicodin -- but in Detox he's anything but calm, and it's hard for him to concentrate on anything else when he's waiting for the pill -- Cuddy and Cam have to wave that chart really hard under his nose to distract him.
I think I remember reading a fic somewhere playing with the idea of House leaving narcs lying around :P :P :P

I think HL probably either gets gum or mints as his "vicodin" and it wouldn't suprise me if he kept in his mouth for longer then he was suppose to, why let a good mint go to waste?
pillpopdoc - March 16, 2005 04:38 AM (GMT)
I don't remember where I read this, but supposedly the vicodine prop pills He takes are auctually surgar pills, like the placebos in the oral birth control packs,

Like the ones House gave to that hypochondriac who thought he had chronic fatigue syndrome?
pillpopdoc - March 16, 2005 06:08 AM (GMT)
Exactly! That was funny, Wasn't it Twixter? I watched that episode again today with a friend who's just gettng into House and she laughed nd lauhed!
Cheers! PPD

As far as scenes in this episode, the pill hunting scene is my personal favorite. As to why he was looking for his wayward pill, I have come up with a fanfic on that topic which may be found at FanFiction.net possible by Friday. For the basic idea, go to above mentioned FF.N and look for the story 'Dea Ex Machina'. A shameless plug, I am aware, but hey..... if the lab coat fits...
rtlemurs - April 7, 2005 03:34 PM (GMT)
I have noticed that in at least one other episode he gets his pill out of that box on the table behind his desk so I think it was just a "Lets annoy Cuddy" move but I'm always happy to read fanFic!! Let us know if it's up on Friday and I'll trot on over and check it out!
Dr. Xreader - April 7, 2005 06:47 PM (GMT)
the 'pill-hunt' fic is a go! Up and running as of..... about 2:25 this afternoon. For those who want to read, head on down to Fanfiction.net.
