Title: It's a Wonderful Lie
TelegramSam - January 30, 2008 07:05 PM (GMT)
Okay first off - why was this aired at the end of January? It's a christmas episode!!!
Weird.
I'm going on very little sleep and there was bad weather last night that made watching the show rather fractured and difficult so I don't have much to say, really, but I thought I ought to make a thread for this episode.
I thought it was hilarious when House stole Wilson's iphone to mess with the new ducklings' heads.
Speaking of the new ducklings, I've decide I don't really like any of them, which makes me sad. The ones I liked - the mormon guy and the no-medical-degree guy - are history, sadly. The rest of them bore me to tears. They have even less personality than the original three.
Oh well, at least Foreman is still around.. <_<

yes this was a strange episode..did they ever figure out what the lady had?
I too liked how House stole Wilson's iphone and used it as a present.
my other favorite line was when House and Wilson were standing outside and they were talking about Wilson's hat and it was House I think who made the comment of his hat not looking like a reindeer, but of a moose on a jew. that was funny.
overall, not a very good episode.
God and peace

I thought the episode was funny, and it was nice to see some follow-up to a classic House theme: lying. Not a stand-out episode, but not an awful one either. I guess my expectations were pretty low, but I did enjoy it.
As for the new ducklings, Kutner is growing on me. He's kind of a sweetie. He's apparently inherited Chase's suck-up role, but he also brings a goofy joy that I like. My response to Taub is mostly neutral, but with glimmers of interest. He seemed to have nice interactions with Foreman in this episode. Thirteen continues to underwhelm, but she wasn't actively annoying in this one. The whole "she's figured out House's game" thing is hard to buy, given that she's just met him. But the big question I have about her is, "Why does she want this job?" She seems to have no respect for House, so what's in it for her?

maybe House hired her for the same reason he hired Cameron..her butt. :D

This was cute. I would have been happy with just about anything after a two-month break, but it was cute. I like Wilson's waving moose antlers.
So--are we supposed to find it funny that a prostitute would play the Virgin Mary and have that kind of "donkey show," or were we supposed to infer that she was never actually a prostitue and that she was screwing with House's head the whole time (which fits better with the title)?
And I totally did not see House's Secret Santa scam coming. :)

I think she was just messing with House's head the whole time. :P

It's all true, be it ever so humble, etc., etc., there's no place like home! With that out of the way. . .
I actually liked this episode. It may well be that I was just so happy to have an ep to watch after all this time that anything would have done, but I don't think so. Like a previous poster said, it was all about House's favorite topic. As I think about it, we once again saw an example of what House doesn't care for, someone who can't lie. I have a feeling, a near certainty actually considering what we know, that TPOTW didn't practice it in exactly the same way as HouseDad did, but we can see about how well that all turned out.
Of course I'm a sucker for scenes of House with kids of any age. And I really liked the character of the daughter in this one, as I think did House. She was a really cool kid.
Now as for what was wrong with TPOTW, it turns out she really did have breast cancer. They ruled it out because she'd had a prophylactic mastectomy due to her family history, however in another one of those physical hiccups on which this show is so often built, some tissue that was destined to become breast tissue got lost along the way when she was in the womb and wound up in her leg. It got cancer. This is why Wilson's comment about things not caring triggered House's mental process, though I don't know how, breast tissue doesn't care that it's not in someone's breast, it acts like breast tissue anyway. Basically, the white substance House drew out with the syringe was breast milk-- only slightly less gross than what it might have appeared to be.
Now the woman in the clinic I'm not sure about. I was going to ask what everyone thought on the "whore with a heart of gold" vs. messing with House's head question, but I see it's already been asked. I can't really make up my mind. On one hand she seemed to be pretty world-wise, but as we learned back in season one, ("Damned if You Do") and saw again two eps after this one, not all religous people have been religious or the same religion all their lives, but on the other she apparently gave House the address of the church and I don't know if that would have been her inclination if she really were a prostitute. On yet another hand-- I think we should have run out by now :) -- though while it's an old cliche it's entirely possible for her to be a prostitute who happens to also go to church (and possible even that the TPTB at that church or the congregation in general don't know what she really does for a living).
I did nearly fall off my seat though when we saw House heading to a church. Like I've said before, I get the vibe that House was raised at least some what religious and/or went to church at some point in his life though, so I thought maybe he showed up just for the ritual or the anonymous companionship-- in stark contrast to how he spent Christmas and Christmas Eve last season-- then I thought "Wow, so this is what it takes to get House to reconsider his (lack of) religious faith". Maybe I'm deluded, but in my case it didn't seem strange to me that he would, draw whatever conclusions you want from that.
I did get a lot from House's interactions with "clinic lady". It confirmed for me that while he likes to joke about it, he doesn't really use prostitutes that often nor is he as comfortable with sexuality as he'd like everyone to think; it's more of his shocking persona than reality. House is okay with shocking others in that way, but when someone decides to play along or return the favor, he starts to look pretty uncomfortable.
Also count me among those who are at least a little in love with Wilson's raindeer hat.
