Title: Say goodbye to the cane?? House season finale
Mithveaen - April 14, 2006 11:39 PM (GMT)
Hugh Laurie's grumpy doctor character Gregory House is to be relieved of his famous cane because the actor is sick of hobbling around the set all day.
In a thrilling season finale to hit medical drama HOUSE, in which the former funnyman is shot by an angry ex-patient's husband, the famous leg injury that has turned the TV doctor into a painkilling pill-popper is cured.
And according to set insiders, that's because Laurie is sick of limping for hours every day.
A source says, "His back was giving him problems... He's been desperately begging producers and writers to have his character's hobble disappear.
"The surgery to mend his gunshot wounds will mysteriously heal his leg."
...
Now I don't really know what to think about this...

Where did you get this?
If that's true...I can't express how disappointed I'll be.

The season finale has scenes where House is hallucinating, so he probably "dreams" that he doesn't walk with a limp (as he did in one of the Vogler episodes), and that's where this comes from. I sincerely doubt that there is any way that surgery for gunshot wounds would "cure" House's leg (there's really no replacement for those thigh muscles). Anyway, I'm not worried until a named and reputable source related to the show confirms this.

I can understand how Hugh Laurie would feel that way. We wouldn't wnat that limp to become 'real'.
It will be interesting to see how Dr. House is received it this is true, ant he no longer limps. House's infarction, the cane and his vicodine addiction is a big part of the character that we have come to know over the l;ast year and a hlaf or so. Hmmmm... <_<
We'll just have to see.
Chers! PPD

if the get rid of his cain and infarction--then he'll be force to deal with his vicodine addiction which should be interesting.

Honestly, I dunno if I really want a House with no limp/cane. It's a major part of his character.

I'm trying to look on the bright side doesn't mean i want the cane to go away.

I wouldn't worry too much. It seems unlikely they'd remove something so central to the character--and I don't know that there's a medically plausible cure, unless he were to be so disabled as to need a wheelchair, an option that they discarded near the beginning.
In addition, I've read on another board (Television Without Pity) that the magazine this article came from has not been the most reliable or accurate source in the past.
If there's any truth in it, it's probably that HL says his back is getting tired and he'd like a break for an episode, especially near the end of the season when he's been doing the limp for a while, so they'll just be shooting House in bed (unfortunately, the more mundane meaning thereof) and in his dream where he's still able to walk normally.
Of course I'd welcome more pre-infarction flashbacks, thus no limp, and while I know they can't take it back too far without getting a different actor, or looking unrealistic, Hugh was convincing as House's younger self in Three Stories and he seems to look younger than he does as House in his publicity shots.

Yuck. I read this somewhere, too, but it was labelled as a rumor and I think that that's probably - hopefully - all that it is. I mean, it wouldn't be realistic at all, and I don't think that the writers would feel it necessary to add something that was so unsupported by facts. Sure, the show has had a few minor medical mistakes, but this just seems too big. After two seasons of watching House limp around and having it be a major part of the plot, it would be pretty lame if they were to just take out a huge part of House the character.
One of the main reasons for me to be skeptical of this is because I just don't feel that the writers would do something like that. The show has, up until now, been very realistic and that's one of the main reasons that it hasn't become 'just another medical show'. I don't know if this makes sense, but I feel like the show's been really, really well-written up to now and if they're just going to throw out something that's been focused on so much after two seasons, it would be more than a little bit disappointing.
Sure, I'd still watch the show. It would just be a low-quality plot idea, unsupported by reality and just disappointing. I doubt that they'd do it, because the writers and producers have, up until now, proved to have good ideas for plot twists and this just doesn't seem fitting or even at the same quality level with what usually happens on the show. For now, I'm going to comfort myself with the idea that this is, indeed, just a rumor.

I too cross my fingers for a rumor. It just seems too implausible. I mean, gun shot + limp = cured?
Hmm. My Achilles tendon hurts. Not as bad as an infarction though, so maybe I'll shoot myself with a Nerf dart gun instead of a real one and see if I get cured.
<kathwap>
Nope. No good. Still hurts. And there's a Nerf dart stuck to my leg.
If HL really is getting tired (which I don't doubt) maybe they can just shoot him from the waist up so the cane wouldn't need to be in the shot, or something.
Maybe they could do CGI cane sequences :P
